Ok, so lets assume for a second that IBM really wants to benefit the OSS movement by copylefting most of their Software Patents
(the fact that i believe that SW Patents are BS in the first place is another issue).
They file it, and maybe get it granted rather quickly. In the US its 3.5 Years until they have to pay an annuity fee for another 3.5 years. lets just assume, instead of paying this, they drop it. the Patent is still on record as prior art. Meaning that any Patent Troll, trying to re-patent this "invention" can be easily blown out of the water. So: Mission accomplished - Software out in the open, no chance for Patent troll to cash in on it.
This Blockhead is not whinging about his stasi-membership, he whines about being accused of not having finished his degrees. calls that defamation! sometimes, i, as a west-german want the wall back! unluckily for him, his closing down was done jsut before the weekend, so his antics have received wide publicity during the weekend. Now it is open to see for everyone what a bunch of stasi-minded idiots the "linke" party are. and the closing down will be raised by monday anyway....
the only way to prevent data mining by the usual suspects (Insurances, employers, banks) is to keep stuff in singly copy dead-tree archives spread across my doctors. anything lesser is an open barn door to Orwellian wet dreams...
Sounds like a good idea to me. People with unhealthy lifestyles cost communities and bigger units (states, federal govt) a lot of money in emergency services, medicare costs, etc. I welcome the idea that those with healthy lifestyles shouldn't be subsidizing those with unhealthy lifestyles. Plus, there is then an obvious economic incentive to become healthier.
Seems like a win-win to me. Sounds like a bloody nightmare to me!
What about people with "unhealthy" hereditary conditions? like asthma? Are you friggin kiddin? or take ulcers: bacteria cause it that are everywhere, but food, stress and smoke are blamed for it,in the minds of the unknowing...
besides: there are a few things that a government CAN do better than a business. And the US healthcare, run by businesses is a clear example of that. THE most expensive health care in the world, with a quality of health care for the public that is surpassed by burkina faso and bangladesh.
in IP-Terms this is called "notorious mark" 'nuff said? anyhow, anywho: any TM on the US and A can be blown out of the water by a request for proof of USE. so youre on the safe side...
> Corel DRAW has been an industry standard right along side Illustrator
yeah, right just like the Lada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada) has been an industry standard alongside the S-Class Mercedes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_S-Clas s).
Please!
how many "industry" people (and that does not include 6th term greeting cards tweakers) do you know that use or have used corel draw productively?
cmyk comps are a nightmare, bezier curves fail to print, and so on...
sigh
Der Spiegel a part of Springer? since frigging when? Der Spiegel Verlagsgruppe is still independent, at least not affiliated with Springer. Actually quite the contrary: Founder Rudolf Augstein has this famous quote going for him: "im Zweifelsfalle links" in english: "when in doubt, were left-wing...". Thats "treehugging, babykilling faggot commie liberals" for our friends from the other side of the atlantic. I am anything but a SPiegel Fan-boy, but calling them part of Springer? thats like calling the daily show a part of fox news primetime....

at least when it comes to the german side of it, your statement is highly questionable, the "main designated" contractor for this would have been empolis, which belongs to arvato which belongs to the Bertelsmann Group...
the money would have (has?) landed in diverse channels, definitely NOT in creating new jobs....
just my 2 pfennigs worth...
Germanys System for automated colleting of autbahn tolls for trucks. Costs the german tax payer literally millions of EUR each month, has been set up by joint venture of Deutsche Telekom and Daimler Chrysler, meant to be working since '02, launched in Fall '03, failed, ETA '05! Snafu all the way.....
Yep! I live in the area, have been there 10 times so far, and still havent seen everything: they have i.e the original Z3 and Z4 (first modern computers in working condition(and they sometimes start them...)) also a complete underground mine, which takes about an hour just to run through, let alone looking at the exhibits. admission is 6, so also cheaper than the rest of munich....
, So for that matter we have very little legislation on the subject...
private copying is OK, selling the stuff is not...
blabla
Since Bertelsmann bought napster, we got even more stakes in the game..
Yeah right! just like Americans invented
