They also get marketing trends, even if they don't have your complete identity. They can say, "People who have The Matrix DVD, also tend to have Fight Club, and tend to drink Jolt Cola." Information like that is just as useful as individual purchasing trends.
Novell has a huge Windows market which is what businesses pay for. They don't care if the server is rock solid stable; they want it to say "Good morning, welcome to Groupwise for Windows, may I kiss your ass?"
Most residential broadband ISPs do not allow VPN communication. I know mine doesn't. VPN is used primarily to bridge existing networks. In other words, you would be using a residential service to bridge a (probably) commercial WAN. If you need commercial service, pay for it.
Being aware of government is everyone's responsibility. Lest you really like losing freedom and control over your life and beliefs. I know I don't; I'd say it matters.
I wonder if technology like this will open the door to web server adapters. Like a PCI card that looks like an ethernet card but is really a full featured web server. This sort of thing would be pretty cool. We offload 3d processing to the video card and SCSI handling to the disk controller so why not have a dedicated piece of hardware for a web server? Hmm, just a thought.
Fuck organized tests. Linux is developed in the real world to solve real problems. It doesn't really matter if it's been developed in a secure planed test lab--- Linux developers write code to work in the real world that protect against real world threats.
I'm seeing this term used rather loosely lately on slashdot, and I thought I needed to comment. First of all, the nature of the term "monopoly" implies that it cannot be plural. There cannot be monopolies of the phone/backbone industry, because if there are multiple powerhouse firms, we have an Oligopoly. Oligopolies do screw the consumer (Gasoline, Automobiles, Backbone providers); however, the exsistance of oligopoly is not illegal.
This is really stupid. An entire building full of computers doesn't draw the electricity of even a single manufacturing device like a hydraulic press or arc welder. C'mon; I don't think the construction industry has managed to take down the power grid yet, I really don't think that the tech industry has anything to worry about.
Are tapes really any more reliable?!? Hard drives get written to and read from at a ratio of a billion to one over a magnetic tape and which one fails more frequently? I throw away bad tapes regularly and can only remember maybe once or twice when a hard disk has completely failed.
The IRQ and hardware conflict shit on the PC is a direct result of PC hardware being cheap. I'm not defending Windows by any means, but poor PC hardware performance is NOT always the fault of the OS. I really don't need to list all of the areas that PC manufacturers cut corners, but I'm sure that we could all make quite a list. That's why a quality PC machine (like a Compaq Proliant Server) costs several thousand dollars more than a "PC o' the Month" special. Regardless of the OS, platform, or application, you get what you pay for in terms of hardware performance.
I guess if you think that ending every phrase with, "because we're killing babies in the womb," is articulate, focused speech more power to you. However, I tend to believe candidates have to have a GLOBAL view of many different issues. Moreover, you say that right and wrong cannot be defined for an individual, yet you're supporting a candidate who has an obviously strong intent to make his moral views law. Thereby, you take the ability to choose morality away from the people. How can one learn to make good moral choices when there are no other options?

Hey! Don't knock banjos and electric guitars in the same song. Check out my favorite band PRIMUS!!!
How is this any different than me paying $50 per month for a cable modem, my friend paying $150 per month for a faster cable, and my employer paying $600 per month for a T1? Money equals bandwidth which equals higher availibility and lower latency. This is nothing special. Same reason a Geo Metro costs a tenth of what a Dodge Viper costs.
Exactly. I'd rather have people from home e-mail me than call me at a hotel when I'm on vacation. That way, I can selectively chose who I want to talk to and who I want to get away from.
Changing OSes is an enourmous task. At my workplace, we upgraded simply from Win95 to Win98 and it took nearly three months. The world moves _MUCH_ slower than the/. crowd. I can't even think it's feasible to migrate from Winxx to an OS like Linux or BSD. Hell, we had people flip out when we upgraded from Netscape Navigator Gold to Netscape Communicator, because the icon was different. Wine (will be) a very very powerful API to smooth these sort of transitions from the familiar to the familiar without crashes.
Where can I sign up for this excellent service? Getting tons of warezzz pr0n delivered straight to my desktop without having to wade through mIRC! What a feature! Thanks M$.

This is the exact same reason why people say slashdot.[com] sucks.
This was already discussed yesterday.

It's called a PC, and you already have one on your desk. :-)
...and other forms of PUBLIC RECORD.
If you don't have a better idea, then stop bitching.
Easy choice....ditch AOL, use Squid and SquidGuard to filter whatever in the hell you don't want displayed.

I bought a (shit)-Packer(d) [H]ell back in '96 that had a recovery CD instead of a Windows 95 CD. So what do you do?
copy d:\win95 c:\win95
problem solved.

Now if we could only make a robot that ran on crickets and flies....

No one needs to defame Apogee trademarks, the games speak for themselves.
