I usually skim over Lileks columns in the Strib. They're almost as painful to read as the movies on MST3K are to watch. Somebody should start writing commentaries to Lileks columns that people can download, print, and read along with his columns.
This is the stupid 100 MPG carburetor debate all over again. If a car company had some incredible technology that tripled the mileage of your average automobile, they would have almost immedate monopoly on the automobile market. Do you know how much that is worth? Do you have any idea how much the oil companies would have to pay that car company to keep it under wraps?
1) our failing insurance system coupled with rising costs 2) the typical American lifestyle
The medical technology is there. Getting access to it affordably and ahead of the millions of other people who need it after a lifetime of TV and McDonalds is another matter.
I'm the same way. Radio stations often don't say the artists name at all these days, or say the names of 5 artists before a block of songs, and I have no idea what I'm listening to. I don't follow new music anymore, since I think most of it is terrible. If I do happen to like a song the only way I'm usually able to figure out who the artist is is by looking up a snippet of the lyrics on the web. If that ability it taken away, I may never buy a CD again.
Silly coward. They're not complaining about paying taxes. They're simply suggesting that the same government which collects those taxes to pay for education would not be too far put out to make the material available for home schooled children as well.
Sad but true indeed. It could be considered one of the failings of society is that success is based on who you know, not what you know. Perhaps if everyone were home schooled and social cliques weren't being introduced and reinforced from age 4, we'd see more intelligent qualified people rise to the top of society instead of what we have now with every bit of society being run by those who socialize best.
Now all we need is the technology from Spaceballs where videos can be released before the movie is finished. Have people watch security videos from the future and just have Tom Cruise round up the bad guys. Voila, no more crime.
The internet was built by private entities? You mean like the phone and cable companies? Yeah, we all know there's no law restricting usage or taxing us on either of those two utilities...
"There is more you can do," DeGette said. "You can do algorithms that will go beyond just the date of birth that they register, to start to weed out some of the underage users."
It's easy fellas, all we need is an algorithm. That'll solve all our problems. Just use an algorithm. Why didn't we think of it sooner?
"The security cameras record sound and audio directly to a videocassette recorder inside the house, and the Gannons posted warnings about the system, Janet Gannon said."
Perhaps he should spend more time pushing for SVG software, and working towards implementation of future SVG specs with enough features to be a replacement for Flash. Saying you're mostly compatible with a proprietary format is hardly the way to win.
Indeed. So rather than sneaking an unwanted 1/2 billion dollar stadium into an unrelated bill, they do it out in the open so everyone knows they just got reamed.
Either way, my ass still hurts.

Actually, this being Christmas and all, a DoS would hurt them greatly.
1) Imagine how much they make per day in sales. 2) Multiply that by 10 to get Christmas-time sales figures 3) Multiply that by 0 to get the amount of sales they make if their site is unreachable

Worst. Conspiracy. Theory. Ever.
Ask the receptionist if you can drop it in the outgoing mail? How on earth did city dwellers pay bills before online bill paying?
I think that is due more to

I only wish I had mod points for you.

From TFA:
"The security cameras record sound and audio directly to a videocassette recorder inside the house, and the Gannons posted warnings about the system, Janet Gannon said."
Sounds to me like there's a sign.
Someone should mod this up a couple notches, he sounds like he knows what he's talking about.
True.

From what I understand, A. Graham Bell's telephone didn't have voice mail and call waiting. By your standards his work was a waste of time.

They'd get the message in a hurry.
