  1. too much military slop over on Armadillo Aerospace Claims Level 2 Lunar Lander Prize · · Score: -1

Then maybe the time limit should be extended. And perhaps it should be geared more towards research teams from academia rather than commercial industries.First off, this is a much loftier goal (far more difficult than suborbital space flight), so naturally it will take longer to achieve. That's to be expected.Secondly, these type of high-risk, low (immediate) commercial return ventures are inherently unappealing to private commercial industries. Things like space exploration and basic research are long-term investments in the future of humanity. Private industries prefer short-term investments with immediate returns. That's why government agencies like NASA and publicly-funded research organizations like CERN are needed. Otherwise these tasks would never be undertaken.Lastly, it would probably speed up the process (of returning to the moon) if NASA hadn't decided to take all that publicly-funded space research/technology and auction it off to the highest bidder, basically turning it into private research (to be guarded as trade secrets) and proprietary technologies that are inaccessible to public researchers. I mean, we went from having no space program to landing on the moon in just under 11 years. Returning to the moon 4 decades later in 5 to 7 years really isn't that unreasonable—given that we're able to build on previously acquired knowledge and experience and actually have the motivation as a society to return to the moon.

So, the argument is that the new system is bad because it may have errors or bad data? Were card catalogs immune to this? It's a database. It's only as good as what you put into it. A bad database is not useful. It just means someone needs to do it better. Honestly, if anything this seems like an argument that the database shouldn't be proprietary. It should be open to everyone so that someone can always make a better version of the metadata with the same base data."It's a piece of ****" shouldn't be the same argument as "nobody should even try it". The Wright brothers didn't exactly start out with a 747 or an F-35.

There is no reason for you to post this comment here when you could have put together a properly formed and documented essay in a couple of months. There is was no reason for Newton to come up with his theory of gravity when in a few centuries Einstein would come up with a more complete theory. This is a long term project for humanity. We damn well better start now rather than waiting to do it right. Badly data can be cross compared and corrected. Data which has not been digitized at all is completely useles

Actually DOS used to run on a variety of x86 machines, not just IBM PCs. E.g. RM Nimbus machines were x86 but not IBM PC compatible - they had different hardware and a different Bios.NT based OSes don't require IBM PC compatibility either. 16 bit Windows also ran on the RM Nimbus and Japanese PC98, both of which were x86 based but not PC compatible. Still there Dos needed to be MSDOS because Windows patched great chunks of code when it took over. Dos would also patch Windows. Someone described this as 'burr

You could say that about any platform, though. OS X sucks because it lacks ports of most major PC games, for example. Maybe it's not Apple's fault, but as someone who plays games, I don't care who is at fault.(Also, Windows sucks, because to get lots of stuff working you have to deal with half-ported abominations in cygwin.)
