  3. Bruce Campbell gets a bum wrap on Who Will Mulder's Replacement Be? · · Score: 1
Bruce Campbell is, IMHO, a pretty good actor...take Army of Darkness and Evil Dead, two movies in which he actually help produce (and write?)- they turned out great! I'd like to see Harrison Ford try and pull off 'Brisco County' or 'Jack of All Trades.' He simply couldn't do it because the writing is horrible. No actor can make a good show/movie when the writing is bad. Why does he take those kind of parts then? My guess is that he wants to eat! Despite this, I would like him to see him take some more serious roles. The X-Files would be a great opportunity and I hope he gets it.

  8. questionable procedures on Tim O'Reilly Debates Patent Office Director · · Score: 1

Dickinson mentioned just how important rule 56 is yet this rule seems only to cater to a perfect world. Tim O'Reilly realizes this. If I don't submit anything for rule 56 then it is up to the patent office to go around and figure out if it is in fact patentable. What is to ensure that the patent examiner is aware of all these technologies? I'm sure there is a detailed process for approving patents but, in the case of software and internet technology, it doesn't seem to be working. I couldn't believe the emphasist that was put on patent re-examination. To me, it seems that Dickenson is using a policy of "Issue patents now and let re-examination sort 'um out!" Maybe that should be the poster outside his office. It's one thing to go around issuing challenges to people to file re-examinations and quite another to actually issue the patents in a honost and decent way.

  11. limited credibility on On Usage of "Hacker vs. Cracker" · · Score: 1

I felt that the article lost a lot to credibility when the author failed to know even what a script kiddie was. Holisticly, I got the impression that there was a constant switch between about 3 different dictionaries to help back the overall theme. As as stated in earlier posts, the dictionary makers don't just sit around and make up new words, it goes by what a large percentage of the population actually use. Admittibly, hacker/cracker/script kiddie are jargon terms(right now). But, the author tries to justify the use of 'hacker' to describe just about every computer event under the sun so that people are not confused. To me, that's false logic; using incorrect terms to describe an event actually introduces more confusion. When ever I read an article that states something about a 'hacker' I always have to actually read the entire article to figure out what they really mean by that. It's like trying to talk about an operating system but without being able to specify what operating system you're talking about outside of sentance context. Next time you talk about windows, mac OS, Linux or any Unix varient just refer to them as 'the operating system' because who needs to be more specific than that?

Unisys's move to "cash in" on this event may actually hurt them. From now on(or from when they started doing this) whenever someone talks about Unisys this is going to be the first thing they think of. Bad PR isn't exactly a good thing in the world of business. If I had to choose between two companies of comparable services Unisys and company B, it's company B all the way. This whole situation shows just another flaw in the patent. A company loosely licensing it's patent for years and then, one day pulling the reighs tight--something's very wrong with that. The entire patent system needs an overhaul(if not a pink slip). If you needed to defend a patent like you did a trademark this situation wouldn't even have happened....then again, just think of all the other problems this would bring in(screwing over the little guy).

  23. class ideas on Seeking Advice for High School Computer Curriculum · · Score: 2

Having graduated from high school two years ago, I have some ideas about what I would have liked to see in a computer class. I'm going to make some assumptions. Firstly, this class sounds like an elective so be clear as to just what kind of student your trying to attract here. If this is going to geared towards someone who knows nothing about computers except web browsing and hotmail make sure students know this before signing up. okay then, I'm assuming this class is for someone who knows basic computer hardware terms, and feels comfortable with basic computing tasks like installing an OS or what have you.

    1. computer hardware. talk about how various components of a computer work and interact. Not just a 'this box contains a cpu' but more of showing just how processor clock speed isn't the whole story to a computers speed and how a processor accesses memory(bottlenecks). Give students two weeks to put together class presentations on a computer topic like 'Athlon vs. PIII' or 'what actually is a mp3 encoder doing to wav files?'<---not hardware I know :)
You could probably do a whole semester on hardware alone but it's not really what your would probably want to do. Maybe 1/2-1/3 of the semester.

    2. OS's I wouldn't bother with windows too much(students KNOW windows) but how about an introduction to Unix systems? I wouldn't spend a huge amount of time on this but I think it would be good to show basic commands and what everything looks like, maybe some BASH stuff
Definitely, some X window stuff(which I'm sure would flare interest). (one little thing I show people who are new to linux is to type xmatrix --root in X. Having a screen saver like that as your background always gets a 'cool!' from people)

    3. Networking - spend a little time learning about networks (what a DNS server does ect.) and (resource permitting) have groups of students responsible for a computer and have them setup a couple servers and practice using what they've learned.

Okay, finally I have always had a couple tips to keep classes like this interesting <rant>
    1. demand a lot from students, truthfully the more you expect the more you'll get
    2. keep it interactive and rewarding. no matter how good you are at lecturing, lecturing about some linux command or how to install a network card == sleepy time.
    3. allow students flexibilty to do their own projects(within reason) ]
    4. super important! with most projects tell students you'll give extra credit for doing something above and beyond the project.

As an example of #4 a friend an I had to write a program in PASCAL when I was in high school. As a final project we had to create a non-trival type program. Instead of just doing something easy we devoted 5 hours a day over 2 1/2 weeks into making some really cool(full featured tron game in svga). Why you ask? Because we were going to get 10 extra points for making something in graphics mode! All it takes sometimes is a nudge. Well, enough ranting.</rant>
I hope you find this somewhat informative, I think I'm going to go play that tron game for a bit :)
