Wasn't it Marx who stated the first step towards communism is to establish a totaltarian regime to weed out all the evil capitalists? Might have been Lenin, Contemporary World Issues is fading away heh...
Well one reason is that they are (just like we are) brainwashed in school into beliveing in the Chinese governments philosophy. Secondly, those who do disagree are persecuted, and most people value their lives more than their ideals.
hrm... I was under the impression those sensors were only used to switch lights. They only cover a very minor portion and from what I understand about them can't really be used to tell traffic. I could be wrong though.
this problem is already solved -- 'weight sensors' that turn on during certain parts of the day. When I first heard about these, I thought it was ridiculous, but sure enough, you can go out (at least in my town) and observe it there is a wieght sensor at most lights.
Um academic networks aren't meant for collecting mp3s. Also, your $40 payment to @home isn't going to cover the cost of the bandwidth you desire. Most people don't want/need that type of bandwidth anyway. If *you* want it, the you should *pay* for it. Don't expect other users to pay for your desires.
Perhaps the fact that Jon never addresses weaknesses in his arguments? He _ignores_ them. His conversations are one way. People who ignore others will eventually get flamed. That's the way it is. I personally don't think expressing a little anger is as big as jon is making it out to be. And no, I'm not a habitual flamer (check my posts if you want).
Ok, so first its any tone of hostility, now its any sense of sarcasm, what's next? I agree hostility shouldn't be used in a discussion, but we are all human, and Jon (like usual) is blowing this whole deal way out of proportion. To throw sarcasm into the bag is just ridiculous. If your ideas are that weak that they can easily be turned into sarcasm, it's your own fault. Honestly, next thing you are going to be telling us 'disagreement = hostility'.
Uh, how damn short is your attention span? Do you know what integrity is? Did you already forget the article about AOL/TW? Did you forget JK's stance on media? Do you know who owns NLC? Nevermind, dont worry about it...
Yea, Katz is a really good listener. He has the courage to admit hes wrong when hes made a mistake. He also does a good job of expressing both sides of the issue. (HEAVY sarcasm intentded). That is the kind of person I want to represent 'geeks' (about throw up from this sentence).
So in summary, we have a person who can not right coherently, is uncreative, regurgitates cliches, is arrogant, never admitted he was wrong, one-sided, and greedy producing a film about 'geeks'. WOW, hat a great combo! AND No, those aren't personal attacks, those are assessmants based on his actions and essays. Perhaps, I'm in the wrong crowd, I guess..
There is a flaw in your scenario.. You assume that Jon Katz is sincere and has some sense of integrity. These are character traits he does not seem to possess (or even know about). His writing is strictly geared towards the benjaminz (see the deconstructing katz link posted about a billion times on this article). He doesn't care how he gets there, as long as he does. Of course all the hundreds (thousands?) of/.er's that supported him will be in for a surprise when they finally see the real Katz.
To quick of a brush off for one or two baddly supported remarks. His first remark is on a peice that demonstrates Katz's lack of research (although anyone who has read any Katz's work already knows that). The second comment remarks on Katz's hypocracy, by gratutiously slamming microsoft and then turning around and using their software. Again nothing astonishing, anyone who has read several of Katzs' peices on multile outleets would already know that. The next two comments are the weak ones you mentioned. Afterwards he goes into Katz's absurd amount of self promotion. No example is needed for that.
Although a lot of the rest does read as cheapshots, there are insights hidden within the cheap shots, such as his Katzs' equation money = success.
Even though I despise trying to categorize people as one genre or another, and hate even more to call someone a 'geek', I'll have to be frank and say anyone who equates money with success is definetely not a geek. You don't do something for money (or at least I don't, but then again maybe I'm not a geek?). Anyway, I don't know what I am, except others sometimes call me a geek, and I know that I don't do things for $. I'm not passing down any type of moral judgement, I'm just tryng to say, I don't think geeks, whoever they maybe, equate money with success.
Movies (and TV) are, after all, one of a culture's most revealing, reliable mirrors.
I think the author misunderstood the quote, but this line in itself is a severely weak cliche. Wow, a culture reflects itself in its activities, what an ingenious suggestion. Who the hell doesn't know that? The sole purpose of this line is to eat space.
As for your other criticism, that seems valid. However, that doesn't eliminate the 100 or so other criticisms the author posted. It doesn't negate the fact that Katz's writing reaks of a one-sided-highschool-thoughtparttern stench. It doesn't alter the fact that Katz equates $ with success (there's a truly "geek" thing).
I don't think the original author ever said the task was easy however it is horrifically obvious that Katz puts absolutely no effort into his writting whatsoever. His articles seem to be written straight from thought with absolutely no background research. As a result, they are excessively incoherrent and contain no redeemable content. IF you have any doubts, read the link that the original author posted, e.g.
What's amusing is how slashdotters have a deep obsession with 'absolute freedom' and complain an bitch over the slightest hinge in the integrity of said idea, however when someone questions the integrity of the site, they are whiners.
stereo-typical jokes really aren't that funny. Jokes based on the the actual character and actions of a person are more funnier. We've all heard enough republican/democrat jokes for a lifetime.
pine is pretty intuitive, college kids who have never used unix pick it up pretty quickly. If your users are more concerned with email and less with asthetics, they could lvie with it, however most have these priorities in the reverse order. Netscape's Email client does all that you've requested.
One question. Local education and police are funded via state sales taxes. If the e-commerce lives up to 1/10 the hype, where the hell are states suppose to come up with the revenue they are losing from local sales? Just a question...
It's amusing how a post filled with jokes based on simplistic misconcepts gets moderated up to 5 on slashdot. A more appropriate line for G.W would be "I'm the govenor of Texas, if it was a country, it would have the 11th largest economy in the world" -- he uses that line whenever someone asks him a question he can not answer. Its quite amusing.
As for Keyes, he is probably the most articulate of all the candidates and he does not support forced moralization of the country. Perhaps you should read up on him before making ignorant assumptions.
Hatch always gets the best lines of at debates, he once asked the other candidates to go on a bus with him and tour the country.
How many drug companies are going to spend billions of dollars on R&D (extremely risk as it is) if they can't even have a temporary monopoly of their findings? People on slashdot think within very narro parameters. Yes there have been bad software patents, but those get repealled anyone. So the current system is fine as it is.
It shoudl be obvious. The patent system provides a reward mechanism for inventors and researchers. Capitalism is based on rewards. Once the idea is patented, it is out in the public. Other researchers and inventors can improve on the idea and use it on their own. Of course they will have to pay, but, if they are really inventing or discovering, they will still make money. This is only a lose situation for idiots who can't come up with their own ideas and want to sell other people's ideas instead. See my other post in this thread, for more
I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with the current system. It's gotten us this far just fine. If it ain't broke, then don't fix it.
The three major software patent cases regurgitated over and over again on/. are Amazon 1-click shopping, RSA Encryption, and LWZ compression. Amazon's patent will most like be repealed in the courts and thus they system will have corrected itself. Except for the extremists, I think most/.ers believe we should have some form of patents in existance. That said, if RSA encyrption isn't patentable, then what is? LWZ compression really isn't a big loss. Wow no gifs! Boo hoo, now you have to use one of the other 50 formats that do the same thing. Unisys is going to lose out on that one.
Furthermore, the patent system was never intended to protect the "intellectual property" rights of patent owners. The purpose of patents was to foster innovation by promoting the spread of scientific ideas
WRONG! I suggest you read the reasoning the founders (US) gave for patents. I believe Jefferson and Franklin specifically stated some stuff reguarding the matter. They were established to protect the ip rights of the inventor. By doing so, they would PROMOTE invention and research because a person is a time-limmited monopoly for their effort. We live in a capitailst society, not some communist dictatorship. You people need to wake up.

Local is free. Long distance you pay. Standard service charge is $15 w/amenties (3-way, call-{waiting,id}) its ~ $25

It could be worse, they could start calling themselves 'allies' :].

Imagine what would happen if real life was run by a similiar system...

Deconstructing Katz.
