Its been a while since History class. However, I could have sworn Marx (or perhaps it was Lenin) wrote that the first step towards communism is a police state. The police state's purpose is to rid the country of all the evil capitalists. Therfore, China and Russia sort of were really communist states weren't they?
Why don't you look over the non-critical portions and then try to decide what to cut out.. Almost all of them go to pretty good causes that would otherwise go unfunded or underfunded if government funding was cut out altogether. LOOK FIRST, then decide. Don't just decide without knowing what we would be missing. Those non-critical organizations also don't take require as much funding as the larger, required organizations, thus the tax-cut wouldbe negligible. When you factor in what you get back for what you lose, you find out you lose a lot more than you get.
Um.. is this/. or zdnet.com? Seriously, what geek would want to write another billing system, email client, or program that has 20 different versions when instead they could be working on cutting edge stuff. I rather be researching robotics or working on AI, than doing trivial programming...
No, but even I could see the Sidekick had too high of CG

You libertarians are really a wacky bunch. So instead of having the government test things for us and publish it so we can see it, we'll just use real-life test-people to see if products are safe. Honestly, are you listening to what you are saying?
oh comeon! The people who are linking to the material are helping propogating it and in a sense not only condoning the action but promoting it. They are encouraging illegal activity. Don't give me this IP bullshit, because we all know, only 1 in 1000 mp3/juarez kiddies even knows what IP stands for. People who sincerely believe that IP is immoral/wrong would really protest it within the confines of the law, not by resorting to an adolescent like behavior. It probably shouldn't be illegal to link to illegal material, but for all I care, it is completely wrong. Thus I could care less if they fined the kid a large sum of money. I really feel like going off into a long, long, long rant, however I also know I need to get a bunch of shit done, so I'm going to save the rant for another time.
I use to think mIRC was great, however when I switched over to Linux full time, I was forced to continually use BitchX. Trust me, BitchX is much better than mIRC. Switching from gui to text takes a little bit of time. But once you've made the transition you'll never watn to go back. You'll wonder how you lived with mIRC HEH.
You must be one of those ignorant sophomores who think that proclaiming themselves agnostics will lend them an undeserved mantle of 'free thinkers'.
Your post is laced with assumptions about mine. Didn't you ever learn assumptions make an ass out of you and you? The basis of science is to continue questioning and experimenting. Nothing can really be proven. However its amazing with what vigor some/.'ers attack anyone who thinks differently than they do. People seem to have finally got the desktop wars under control, however the segmentation and animosity have seem to spread to religious/atheist now. There is no point of making personal attacks against people who think differently. It just shows a level of immaturity. Yes, I was slightly wrong about Einstien, I admit that. However there are others (I'll name them if you really want me too). BTW, you were also wrong about Einstien (Not going to get showed up without fighting back a little:):
My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vivid consciousness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment. Letter to M. Berkowitz, October 25, 1950; Einstein Archive 59-215
By the way, I don't think of myself as a 'free thinker' at all. I know I don't think freely and am restrained by many things.
I am personally undecided (agnostic, but leaning towards existance) on the existance of God. However, what I do find amusing is the adamant atheist dogma on slashdot. What is quite intriguing is how many of their "gods", those who did tremendous work in the sciences, were religous. What is even more intriguing is you'll never find a slashdot athiest reply to a post that brings this issue up:].
Your key argument against my argument is the flaw in my comparison between posting the winner of the Superbowl on slashdot and posting news about Q's death:
Football is ok if thats what you like, but it is a really stupid comparison to try to make here. I for one could care less about it, of course since I am female that may have something to do with that too, but it still has no place here and certainly less to do with the subject matter at hand.
However, this argument is inherently flawed in its own subjectivity as you blatantly admit. The fact remains that under a strict definition of news for nerds, stuff that matters (say the definition given a year ago), both justifications would be dubious at best. The rest of your post (reread it), basically side steps the issue at hand.
My arugment is that the general idea of what is news for nerds, stuff that matters is expanding. As the definition expands, more is adopted, and the content becomes more superficial. As this occurs, the content then appeals to a larger audience because it is less specialized. Content becomes watered down. CNN, TIME, & BBC all have tech sections, however I prefer./ for my TECH news because it fits my esoteric niche. The point I'm trying to bring out in my post is the fact taht slashdot is digressing from the esoteric roots it was born in and heading towards a CNN/TIME/BBC like section. Wheter you like to recognize this fact or not is up to you, however ignoring it will not make it go away. I suggest you slowly backtrack the articles posted over the past few months. You'll notice the trend quite quickly.
Um, you haven't watched fox lately have you...? Some of those ideas were already on TV. I think the next special is "Who wants to marry a milionare?". Do you really need to even ask if we are a shallow society? The answer is quite obvious. They say the Roman empire fell when its population stooped to entertainment in perverse activities. One can only wonder when the American Empire will come crashing down.
All hail the new dogma of science! God is dead! People are serfs (myself included). Does it really matter what doctrine we follow or belive in? None of us really understand. None of us really decide for ourselves. If humanity can ever empower itself to decide for itself and not as a collective, that will be something revolutionary.
The idea of the man of the century is idiotic. You really can't pick a man of the century. There are just too many great men within any given century to just pick 1.
If you want simple program installation, use package management exclusively. Someone will make an rpm or debian of it soon enough. You just have to wait a little longer. This combined with (gnorpm & rpmfind) will allow you to easily install almost any software package as root. The remaining problem is simplifying installation for non-root users. The problem here is that many packages are not made relocatable. RedHat really needs to fix this, and they need to design some sort of standard bin, lib, & etc structure for user specific programs and then export all neccessary varaibles. Then, rpm should come with a tag, --for-me-only , or --user-specific, so it installs in said users directory.
Mandrake's definetely looks the nicest from the ones I've seen pictures of. RedHat's is pretty bland and takes a little bit to get loaded. Their text installer works better and looks nicer than their graphic installer. They really need to work on that.
1) French 2) Russians 3) Americans Dude, you really must be on something if you honestly think anyone can be more arrogant than the French. It isn't possible. Its the only thing the French have, and they will fight to the death to maintain there status.
You think the American government is corrupt, you haven't seen anything. Russia is under the control of a true kleptocracy. The food isn't going to the people its going to theives in charge. Those theives then manipulate the story to make it seem like everything is the West's fault.. Something really needs to be done about Russia before it blows up in our faces.
Although I'm indifferent, I do think there is some validity in the original posters argument. If 70 friends of mine and I get together and submit stories about who won the Superbowl, it doesn't mean/. should post it as news. I mean look at the physics involved in football, projectile motion, action/reaction forces, etc., etc. etc. The point the original commentor was making was the fact that as/.'s audience grows, its loosening its standards -- its integrity -- and coming up with extremely weak justifications (the mere fact that he attempted to justify is proof in itself of the merit of the story) for posting stories which really don't belong. Why you say is this happening? Why everything happens in our society? Money. Of course you can only prostitute yourself for so long. Prostitutes do loose their looks after a while, and no one wants to be with an ugly and old prostitute. As/. heads more towards the mainstream, its original audience -- the people who told their friends and reload 100 times a day -- are going to leave. Once there exodus is complete don't be surprised when slashdot looks more like zdnet.com than a geek/nerd/unix oriented site.. Of course at this point, they will just be another whore on the street, and eventually will be lost in the crowd... Going with the general ideas in my post and the fact that people don't like the truth, I expect this comment to be moderated into oblivion quite quickly. Moderators, don't let me down!

Yes I agree all Bad code is hard to read. However, perl is more prone to bad coding practices since it is much more loose in its syntax.
