... First, I am not sure that email is really by Gates -- from reading his writing or listening to him in the past, it really does not sound like his style. Also, "I reboot my computer... why should I have to reboot my computer?" I find it hard to realize that he wouldn't know the technical difficulties in replacing a dll while the system is running, and possible ways around this, and the current state of affairs. However, maybe I'm giving too much credit here...
Maybe what he ment by 'why should i have to reboot my computer' is 'why does the stupid thing practically *force* me to reboot *now*'? It's something that really bothers me in Windows, you know, the 'would you like to reboot now or be reminded in 5 minutes?'. Usually, I don't want to reboot at all at that time, but i have to because the stupid window keeps popping up every 5 mins.
When linux updates, it tells me that a reboot is needed to complete the update and then leaves me alone. Much better.
If you want something with more options than FreeNAS, give Openfiler a go.
I used it for my internship to build a NAS that exported its drives over iSCSI (one big virtual drive that, at the hardware level, consisted of 6 U320 SCSI drives in RAID6 + another virtual drive made up out of 2 1TB SATA drives in JBOD) and getting it all to work was a breezer. Everything you need can be configured through its web-based UI.
A real joy to work with, and it will work as fast and stable as FreeNAS, if you set it up properly.
Things like QT and Norton and whatever junk comes preinstalled on new machines are the reason that I always completely format each drive in any new system that I acquire.
I did not pay to get a system stuffed with crap that I don't need. I especially hate those trials they tend to install, like 60 days free Norton Antivirus. So I just format it all, this way I get a nice, clean install with only the software that I choose.
I'm looking forward to the day where new systems will be delivered with an empty disk and a bunch of installer CD's, if that day will ever come.

3) Firefox 3 (beta) is cool and all, but it does not support various plugins so I downgraded to firefox-2 Just a hint, but the API for Firefox addons hasn't changed a whole lot from FF2 to FF3, so there is a good chance that most of your addons are compatible with FF3 even if they say they're not (at least mine are). You can force FF3 to load your addons anyway by entering 'about:config' in the address bar and then right-click in the list you get and create a new boolean option 'extensions.checkCompatibility' and set it to false. Then restart FF.
I'm not saying all your addons will work, but it did the trick for me and I'm using quite a few addons, so you may as well give it a shot, trying won't hurt.
For those of you that can't run Gnome or KDE, don't forget Xubuntu! (http://www.xubuntu.org) This version of Ubuntu features XFCE as a desktop environment, which is more lightweight then the other two, while maintaining most functionality. Alternatively, you can just get XFCE next to your current desktop environment and set it up so that you can choose which environment you want to use for your session each time you log in.
You could then, for example, use Gnome or KDE when your laptop is running from its adapter and use XFCE when running on battery power, to cut down the power usage.
