Note that a board foot of red (or white) oak
is damn heavy for its size. I would suspect that his little cube, when empty, is heavier than a full tower case with power supply.
Whoa! And I thought I was the only one in
Louisiana to read/. I saw this bike at Mels
diner on 90 about a year and a half (two years?)
ago... it was soooo incredible in person. We saw
it take off..yeeeow. The guys from the shop were
there doing an interview. They also had a
turbine powered truck(s) and some other cars.
Amazing. Amazing it took this long to get posted
to some news site on the net.:P
I think that these responses are missing the
point the author was making in that the rpm
binaries are typically (if not always) installed
set UID root.
Perhaps we should be looking at ways of making
that better in the future. For instance, you
install the OS, of course, at this time all of
the rpms are installed by root, however,
a casual newbie now wants {insert your favorite
package that does not come with distro here}
installed. At this time he/she grabs a binary rpm
from the first site a seach yeilds (lets say
he/she does not know about rpmfind or the home
page of thier distro)... I think that from
a security point of view, perhaps now the user
would be better off if all packages they installed
did not need root to do it.
Of course, after saying all of that, I think I
recall a distro that does this already (does not
use root for package installes, etc). Anyone
know what distro does this?
That is really interesting in that I am a
computer engineer (EE degree w/CS minor)
with a math minor and am getting a MS
in Physics... I can not seem to find a
job such as the one you describe. I wonder
if it is the fact that so many "hackers"
just go into CS and just want to program
only. For instance, I teach Physics labs
at the university (I have a TA) and the CS
people do not seem to know what is going on
in Science. They take the courses because
they "have to". I always thought that
(in the past at least) the majority of
CS people would end up working for a scientific
firm....
I was watching Futurama (sorry) since I had not
seen it in a long time and there was no game on
that channel:) when I saw a (bah!) M$ commercial.
New one, about how _reliable_ thier servers are.
It showed an empty office with servers in it and
spoke of how everyone was home enjoying milk and
cookies with no worries because Redmond was
running the show.
I wonder if this is just to tout the "new" OS,
or M$ standard campaign to make you forget about
all of those outages last week at thier server
farm...

Its EMI, and it would not make it that far.
cheers.
