The charter is stridently Capitalist, privatization (profitization) of everything that people depend upon, this is a radical agenda for China. Radical is a term like 'terrorist', one man's radical is another's hero, so i will withdraw that term--it is a call for a Western Capitalist system in China. I don't reject that Charter in its entirety, it promotes many things I believe in, things good for people; freedom of association, religion etc. but I believe that Capitalism is the biggest problem facing humanity, so I don't blame them for shutting him down.
So much to respond to here;
I happen to think my personal critique of Capitalism has some merit and don't mind testing _those_ ideas with you...but to keep it on topic, my point was simply to bring up the Chinese viewpoint more than start a Communism vs. Capitalism debate. Characterizing 'anti-Capitalism' and 'anti-Capitalists' as you have is a straw man. The viewpoint we have been fed since birth in the West is that the former is GOOD and the latter is BAD. If someone or some group threatens the status quo, they are put into jail, sometimes without trial and even tortured--even in the USA--If the Nobel committe had given the prize to Osama Bin Laden for leading a fight against Imperialism and Colonial occupation, what would be the reaction in the USA? The point here is that this prize is very partisan, very NON-Peace, and the Chinese have every right to see it as an affront to their dignity.
would that it were so, i used to think that way when i was 10 as well. but thanks to pvc Manning and wikileaks we have yet more incontrovertible proof that you are extremely clueless.
i never thought of it that way, good observation. though it is also amusing to see what absolute bumbling thugs they are in the process, not an ounce of finesse. they will get their man, but lose way more in respect amongst human beings in the process. this empire is going down fast.
and (b) Julian Assange quite possibly committed sexual assault? Is this some sort of cult of personality thing where, because you like WikiLeaks, therefore Assange can do no wrong?
I can't speak for everyone, but there need not be any cult-worship to try and spin this as not-a-rape, i havent met a single person who doesnt laugh their ass off at the stupidity of the charges, and the stupidity of the Swedish authorities obviously doing the bidding of the Empire. I mean, come on, they are pulling every dirty trick they can to punish him for exposing their corruption and incompetence. Check it out, the 'victim' just happens to have worked with the notorious CIA terrorist Corriles, this honeytrap is as blatant as it gets. Discrediting the messenger works quite well, that is all this is. If they can get Sweden to extradite him to the US, then bonus points. Assange is cancer to the powers-that-be. and i wouldnt assume that others would be willing to go down this road along with him, this operation could very well be suppressed. Corriles story: http://my.firedoglake.com/kirkmurphy/2010/12/04/assanges-chief-accuser-has-her-own-history-with-us-funded-anti-castro-groups-one-of-which-has-cia-ties/
"purposely breaking a condom"??? i know there are many anxious to pillory Assange for not being a good lickspittle, but this one takes the cake for stupidity. I mean, how and why would anyone 'break' a condom? is 'break' being used in a special way, like 'slipped off' or what? purposely breaking a condom is not an easy thing to do and would be a bizarre thing to do, to say the least. don't forget she bragged about bedding Assange to her twitter friends, and also threw a party for him, afterward, all on public record. The charges are pure dirty tricks, bearing all the clumsy incompetence of public servants willing to do such things for their superiors.
but even when they do he will get a proper trial in Sweden and if he didn't do anything wrong he doesn't have much to fear.
my gawd there's some chilling irony in that statement. It is exactly the notion used to justify the Patriot Act deconstruction of freedom from government intrusion. ie. "if you have nothing to hide, then you shouldnt mind having your phones tapped without warrant". It assumes government benevolence and desire for justice, something that has never ever been possible in human history, (hence the hard won rules protecting from it) So we see a laughably clumsy case of persecution of a man who just happens to be exposing government corruption by a lapdog state that was exposed as a tool of US extraordinary rendition, possibly the worst revelation of US govt violation of sacred principles in years (its a close race between that and imprisonment without trial). and you're pretty sure he will have a fair trial. incredible. more likely he will be extradited to the US where he will be hung by his nipples in the Fox News courtyard.
For crying out loud, this mod system is as corrupt as the USGovt, there isn't a shred of insight in that post. clearly the mod wants to help the persecution for political reasons.
stepping back from whether your logic is sound, and far away from whether you're a dick or not, (not at all my intention in responding), consider that the concept of money, and more importantly, organizing ones life around and defining success in the world in monetary terms, concedes sovereignty to the Lords that Unity100 is referring to. You speak of money in the same sense that one might speak of air or water--fundamental parts of nature when in fact it is a pure fiction backed by violence. just as the peasants of old came hat in hand in order to given the honor to be allowed to work some piece of land, we now come hat in hand to our bankers to beg for the means to make something for ourselves. Capitalism does rule the land, obviously, but it doesnt _need_ to work that way, there isn't anything beyond violence and terror that perpetuates this latest system of exploitation.
There is a subtle but crucial value in exposing the pathetic little man behind the curtain, posing as the great and powerful 'leader of the free world'.
The cables are indeed mundane, and base and weak in spades. All savvy folks already know how corrupt our political leadership is, how cynical the world _really_ is, right? and _of course_ throughout the thousands of cables describing US goals and efforts in this world we are yet to discover anything worth cheering for, worth being proud of, worth dying for, from a humanist perspective.
we know the clock ticks and the sun always sets, but sensational or not, there is some intrinsic value in the witnessing of it.
"civilization vs. Communism" you say. I say "Capitalism vs. civilization". Capitalism is another word for "law of the strong"...Feudalism 2.0. We better all hope for a cure for Capitalism pretty soon before we extinct ourselves.
And your "civilization vs. militant Islam" canard is nothing more than a PR campaign designed and promoted by Zionists, appealling to people's base fears, appealing to our jungle roots if you will, to maintain the ever-eroding support for their racist colonial project. It couldn't be more anathema to 'civilization'.
. These ARE the same people that have made no bones about wanting to commit genocide against all Jews, and have tortured and murdered millions of their own people.
We have so much mainstream media dedicated to misrepresenting Iran,do you really need to regurgitate this long-discredited horseshit here on slashdot?
"(at the time, I was racking up debt, which I am now paying off)."
Not to quibble too much, but if you were racking up debt, you were not living sustainably. Since generating an income requires an energy input, your lack of income was suppressing your energy footprint.
This is an excellent analogy to apply to the topic at hand; Since generating an 'economy' requires an energy input, any lack (or _decline_) in energy-income will suppress the economy's energy footprint. That is to say, either replace that free-energy-input or get smaller, simpler, less mobile, less luxurious, et al.
Peak Oil is a slave labor force on steroids that is agitating to organize...
your argument is sound but it is an aside to the economics of energy, which is the salient point of Peak Oil. Peak oil is not about the oil itself going away, it is about a diminishing energy profit.
Our economy is a direct product of the awesome energy profit available in oil, transitioning into a less profitable asset. (unless you're an abiogenic dreamer and expect the production numbers to rebound any day now!) It will affects every single thing in your world. It will require a mass population reduction, for those who won't go quietly, it will require work that many cannot imagine.
Nothing touches oil and gas for concentrated portable joules...its excellent properties are the reason we now have 6.7 billion people, an amazing technological superstructure and a global warming problem.
So far, nothing comes close to the cheapness of petroleum and gas, and NEG is everything. (Net Energy Gained)
The good news in all this: the solution to global warming and over-population is peak oil!
And it's not just the cost of buying _oil_ (or gas), it's the cost of every single thing you need and want...absolutely nothing is untouched by the cost of oil at this point in our economy.

It's really a shame /. doesn't have a "-1 censor" choice so the squeemish mods among us can retain their integrity.
Liu Xiaobo is not about 'peace', he is a proponent of radical Capitalism, that's his crime. Personally I think we need a lot more of his ilk in jails here in the West, but they run the place!

k, fair enough, but these charges?
plus there's often a completely diff justice system for activists in any country.
Sweden also has the distinction of assisting the US's extraordinary rendition program.
rather than just remove it entirely, ok, whatever, diff strokes!
it appears this case rides upon a condom failure of some sort.
and it will be hard to prove
thrusting both parties into the spotlight
to end up, i don't know, spent. (running out of ideas here;)

I wonder if he'll magically disappear off the grid and end up in one of the US's inhumane 'prisons'.
Not an impossibility, considering Sweden is on record assisting the US in its illegal rendition/torture
Sweden Violated Torture Ban in CIA Rendition http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2006/11/09/sweden-violated-torture-ban-cia-rendition

Your patronizing inadvertantly proves his point.
All they did was make the job of manipulating foreign nations more difficult.

And let's not forget about:
1. Food
2. Economic activity
3. Security
4. Growth
5. An empire-class military
