  1. Still waiting for the Slim to get hacked... on Sony Update Bricks Playstations · · Score: 1

I waited until the slim came out to buy my PS3. I was a little dismayed that it came without the option to install Linux on it but it didn't stop me from buying it because I figured somebody would figure out how to get it back on there.

Well it's several months later and I still have yet to see anything. Lots of speculation but nothing on getting Linux back on the PS3. And now they are removing it from the fat version? I was going to pick one up so I could play with Linux on it (I have no real need for it since I have a dedicated media center tower PC sitting next to my HDTV) but I guess I can't now.

This seems to be a growing trend lately. Companies try to open up their hardware in some kind of limiting fashion, only to wind up removing that functionality later instead of trying to fix whatever security holes or anything else that is wrong with it. And if those fixes are bricking legit user's hardware, that is even worse. Why don't these companies FIX their issues instead of just REMOVING them?

  2. So the industry thinks pirating is only a PC issue on Game Devs On the Future of PC Gaming · · Score: 1

Last I checked, there is an XBOX, XBOX 360, PS, PS2, PS3, DS, PSP, and many other sections on torrent sites for a reason. While you can't play online with pirated copies of console games, they basically invited pirates to hack their XBOX 360's and such by offering cheaper, less feature rich versions of the consoles ("Arcade" Edition?) that are perfect for cracking, while the main uncracked console is used for online.

Just because they have good sales numbers doesn't mean pirating isn't happening on consoles. I know many people with cracked XBOXs and Playstations from every console generation. It only shows their desire for one thing: money. Gone are the days of game makers making games for the sake of the game or their own interest. And while I know that this is a capitalistic society, it pains me to see them turn a blind eye to piracy on one front because it makes more money for them at the moment.

Also, we are about 1 or 2 generations away from consoles essentially being a PC (the original PS3 shipped with a Linux boot option!). They need to realize that there will always be pirating no matter what they do. PC Gaming shouldn't be treated like some kind of ghetto where you are guaranteed to not make a profit unless you are targeting a "niche audience".

  3. Re:Listen to the police on Chicago Debates Merits of ShotSpotter Technology · · Score: 1

Rochester, NY uses ShotSpotter with a lot of success. It is really useful in downtown, heavily populated areas as the price per square milage of coverage makes it less attractive to implement in a sparsely populated area. But Rochester has the most crime of all the cities in NY (if it were the same size as NYC it would have almost twice as much crime.

I know that the 911 center here likes ShotSpotter. Once it has enough data collected from the sounds of crime and accidents (gun shots, car crashes, etc) it becomes very helpful. It doesn't help lower crime, but it helps in the responsiveness of law enforcement and emergency units, which ultimately saves lives. And I suppose the flashing blue lights that indicate a shotspotter camera/mic are a deterrent after having it around for so many years.

Yea, there are a lot worse things to do with your time than be overweight and play video games. I mean, have they WATCHED the news lately? If a cheeseburger and some video games are on the menu, I think that is a lot "healthier" (both physically and mentally) than having murder on the menu.

As disturbing as it is to me, that is the way things seem to be going. "World" or "International" is a word being thrown around at the government level for a long time now. Especially since countries are slowly becoming more and more combined in terms of borders (look at the European Union, and the proposed North American Union and Asian Union). While I don't agree or think these "unions" are great ideas, having the position of the cyber security "czar" be a kind of international position would sorta make sense...

I do nit envy whoever gets that position though, since trying to even audit network information, or anything to do with an overseas country is a real pain. A company I worked for had elements in Argentina as well as India (mostly outsourcing of support calls for India) and some of the things were obnoxious that had to be done to audit security and network policies.

  24. Good idea on California To Move To Online Textbooks · · Score: 1

I actually think that this is a good idea. I have long wondered why all schools don't use hard bound text books. Most colleges have some form of online text books available to all students. I attended RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) and most of the time, the text books we needed for class were available for free in an online version through our school's library, in addition to being available for purchase in a hard copy.

There were many times throughout my schooling where this kind of thing would have been helpful. For all the people out there, think about not having to carry a LOAD of books to school anymore, and only have to bring a laptop or have all your classes held in a computer lab (or, heaven forbid, the school springs for computers in every classroom). Also, I can't even count the number of times a text book got lost, left somewhere, or simply got destroyed (such as getting wet). These are issues that would not really be an issue if all text books are online.

While getting rid of the option for obtaining a hard copy of a text book completely isn't gonna be for everyone, I think this is a really forward looking idea, and Schwarzenegger should be praised for it. It's just too bad that it took this terrible economy and a state budget deficit for this kind of thinking to surface and take hold.
