As an IT person for over twenty years, I still pain at this cloud presence. Who owns your data? Google, Amazon, Microsoft? Might as well give all your keys to someone else. Wait, when the federal government gets into the cloud infrastructure will I feel any different? No. Sales, marketing, and the all too easy "it's what everyone else is doing" argument. Remember, easy is a four letter word. Lemmings....
For a man who had so much promise, what do we get? First, yes, "black" president who could have rewritten history books has done little substantive. What makes me more ill than anything else is this "grouping" along many political lines. I fear for our sovereignty, our freedoms (or what we have left), and the most immediate future. We, as the American culture, has failed to promote liberty for as long as I can remember. We, collectively, immigrants and all, are at risk of this behemoth, monolithic, corporatocracy. Everything recorded, everything censored, and no expectation of privacy anymore. Read your employee manual. I bet it will not only make you sick, but it will illustrate you and I are just batteries for harvest. Yes, I did make reference to the Matrix. No conspiracy theorist here, just observation over decades. (mic drop)
If our government, which is supposed to be by the people and for the people, continues to systematically erode any semblance of our American culture, they will destroy it. When people are afraid of things like hackers, a far too aggressive and repressive government (even local, county & state) or not willing to let someone else's judgement decide what perhaps my motivations were on January 1, 1990, people will stop. The country will stop. Economies will fall. It's not pretty folks. This is America and we all have a responsibility to insure our way of life and expectations. Lemmings, please leave the building.
With all of the security, personal, and business issues who is surprised? I've seen this coming for awhile. According to FB I live way down under and it's not Australia. Social Media can kiss my... I recall being criticized by a potential employer for having a big NULL when it comes to my social media behavior. That disturbed me and even led me to a more anti-social media stance. It has all been hijacked by commercial interests.
It is not Facebook specifically but a practice that should be looked at carefully regardless of sector. Problem with distrust is that it is not healthy and often advances that in which we fear. Fear can be motivating without discrimination. When one or a group of people are unreasonably fearful or distrustful it is a cancer from which recovery is likely very difficult. Think about what happens to a culture when a government doesn't trust its people.
The real problem here is accountability. It appears that there is none, not in the private sector nor public. You started to see some of this in a touch of revolt with exit polls and media outlets being surprised by the intent and whit of the American public and the data they (the public) were communicating. It appeared to me that the public got wise to the tradition of entrance and exit polls and to an extent misled the media! We are at a tipping point with all of this. My fear is that it is irreversible and what we should be trying to protect may in fact already be gone...
Please. This is simple pandering to manufactured crisis' that has been going on for a long time. Does everyone realize that within a hundred years of time we have progressed as a species faster than any other time in history? The planet is a living breathing organism that can catch a cold, fever, flu, etc. We are more or less trying to micro manage the health of a 4.5 billion year old planet. Yes, I am certain we have as a species effected the environment and we DO need to be cognoscente; however, mother earth can and will take care of herself.
As far as this solar issue, isn't there more pressing things that a presidential candidate should be consumed with? Russia, China, Iran, (
Clinton, in my opinion, will hurt this country more than help or lead. She has this sense of entitlement that wreaks. This is unfortunate as the battle and movement to be the "first female" president of the United States trumps (no pun intended) and defiles the dignity and integrity of the office of POTUS. I for one will be happy when there are no longer pursuits of social experimentation and where decisions of this kind of import will be based on what they should, the merit and qualification of any candidate. Perhaps this is a Utopian perspective on our democracy, however, it isn't a bad standard from which to start qualification.
Know you folks have me thinking how something like this might look. Given the comments and assuming that people are not next door, I wonder how best to approach an IT services company of some description with a focus on "seasoned" professionals? Experience is paramount, age not a factor, honor, integrity, and honesty also critical components. I think if you dare to lead, the lemmings will follow...;-)

Well put and I shall put it to use. I am 40+ with 20 in the biz, have been unemployed for about a year, lost just about everything and am scratching my head. I think the title of this article is appropriate. It's all economics. There is nothing worse than seeing a manager with a smirk on his/her face low balling you simply because they can. Plus the external expectations that you will foot the expense to keep yourself up to date on technology is a bit much too. Which one, at what cost, and how far to take it? Cops, firemen, and many other professionals get, as a benefit, some training that is required to maintain their roles, not IT. IT is not unlike the software industry; here, sign this EULA that exempts us for any liability resulting from the use of our "killer," must have app even though it was run through some code mill and subject to limited testing. Security was not a consideration, sorry. Tell that to GM. I bet the auto industry would love to be allowed to use and apply EULA's. Yes, I am a bit bitter today as I digress.

I am not swinging at nuts and it isn't a simple issue with performance, rather working! It has been and continues to be a question of whether or not I can have any confidence in their products, period.
Given AMD/ATI's reputation and my own experience, no wonder. I would have left AMD/ATI too. Much about marketing and less on performance. nVidia is my personal preference for just that reason. I am only writing this because of a recent experience with HP/AMD driver issues on a Windows 8 install and non-compliant, non-working OpenGL implemetation. Inexcusable in my humble opinion. This is NOT a gaming issue, rather a high performance application issue and this is not the first time. AMD, GYST (yes, explatives involved)! Screams of SCO type litigation...

The faster we can move data is in some way connected to how fast life moves in every respect. There is a point when "cool" is truly a four letter word. Not that I am arguing against it, it's just that there is a similar arguments within the AI industry. In more and more ways our achievements are outstripping out ability to deal with the consequences.
