It's not squatting, the domains are paid for. Squatters just re-register every X (60 or 90?) days. When NSI doesn't get the money, they release the name and the squatter re-registers.
How could this possibly be a restriction of free speech? The domain names were open for anybody to take, the Bush guys just got to them first. You are still free to put up a site that makes fun of Bush, details why he's a bad choice, or even documents why you think he's the leader of a vampire cult. You just have to think of a name that hasn't been registered yet.
Isn't gore in the Democratic Party, which is dominated by leftists with outdated social theories that have been disproven by the collapse of Soviet Russia and the Eastern Block? Surely a bozo who doesn't accept campaign contributions in a buddhist temple or doesn't write books about how evill American corporate greed is destroying the planet would be the lesser evil in this case.
Or do you mean the Green or Peace and Freedom or Amercian Communist or some other unlikely-to-get-elected fringe group?
Not technical superiority, I dare say that's been tried. When customers perceive that they're being gouged, simply because they have no choice of where to go, they do begin to get a little pissed off.
In practical terms what does it mean? We'll probably see slightly higher sales for Apple, coming mostly from the point and drool crowd. Be may see a little more action from media types (not sure about this), and free OS's will probably get a boost from fed-up users who consider themselves technically proficient.
The sad part is, all of the migration will probably be too small to be noticed, except by the gaining communities.
I figured Rob was just throwing in a little play on words to mess with our minds. It could be a typo, but still, if you can't play with language, what good is it?
Giving credit where credit is due? More like riding a popular wave as means of self promotion.
Linux is just a kernel, no argument there. That kernel, though, is quickly turning into the most popular piece of software in the world. Were it not for Linux' popularity, GNU would still laboring in relative obscurity. Yes, you guys are famous in the Unix world, but thanks to Linux, your name is being noticed by the wider world.
And you're still not happy.
Although I'm a big fan of GNU (gcc is my friend), I'm beginning to understand where the FreeLinux guys are coming from.
Bill knows he's lying, we know he's lying, and he knows we know he's lying.
He just doesn't care.
He'll keep on spewing the lie until enough people start repeating it in the press. Shouldn't take long, people would rather believe sound bites than check things out for themselves.
It's a war, apparently, and Bill's main weapon seems to be FUD. Fortunately for Linux, we have more substantial weapons.
Maybe it's a bit of projection on the author's (Temple Grandin) part, but in "Thinking in Pictures", it's stated that Bill Gates has some personality traits that are quite like a high functioning autistic.
The good thing about it is, it allows him to focus quite intently on what he can do well (theft and marketing), the bad thing is, it doesn't leave much room for what he can't do well (writing).
It's too bad Paul Allen didn't have more friends, way back when.
What he failed to point out is that despite there already being so many distro's around, all with their competing features, is that they are still far more compatable than each other and the various un*x flavors than Windows is between different versions of itself.
Of course, Windows2000 is simply another division in that, and then there's 64-bit Windows, and then...
Quit rationalizing and face the fact that Gore said it.
He's a typical politician, trying to weasel his way on to the "right" side of an issue. The difference is, this time, he got caught in a bald-faced lie.
The only thing sleazier than media is rationalizing fools who refuse to believe the truth in defense of "thier" guy.
I visited in the 80's, the toys they had then were interesting enough. Now that I've been reminded about it, I need to find an excuse to visit when I'm out that way this summer.
Oh, and Marie Callender (sp?) pies are good stuff. Hope the brats appreciate it.
He's opposed manned spaceflight in Congress, yet never passes up a chance to schmooze with astronauts.
He's taken money from the tobacco producers, yet demonizes them every chance he gets.
He's called for campaign finance reform, yet accepts $5,000.00 checks in a buddhist temple from nuns who have sworn a vow of poverty and never thought to question the source of the funds.
Face it, Al Gore is a hypocritical, self serving, self aggrandizing SOB who will try to be on the "right" side of an issue if it will bump him up a half point in the polls, since he has no strong convictions of his own other than that the people exist to serve government and not the other way around.
In other words, he's just being a typical politician.
Why not link Linux.com to Linux.org?
/. for "LSA" (or was it "SLA"), and your question will be answered.
Do a search on
A redundant array of inexpensive machines?
I propose a new buzzword: Redundant Array of Inexpensive Nodes (RAIN)
Same idea as RAID for disks, if a node fails, you just replace it and go on your way.

If you have an example of someone accepting political donations in a Christian church, please post a link.
:(
If you would like to see what my comment is based on, check out the "35 reasons not to vote for Al Gore" link that someone else posted.
If you're just being sarcastic, sorry, I missed it.

Geez, /. vs Consumer Reports, and Consumer Reports goes down!
Guess I'll have to try again after the fervor dies down.
On the bright side, I wonder if this means that Consumer Reports will do a feature on web servers any time soon.
This is the kind of crap that's going to kill M$.

At least until the next bug fix.

I thought it would be interesting, until I hit that bit about remote viewing.
If I wanted Art Bell, I'd go to his site.

This is some kind of IQ test.
:)
If you pay $500 to read what Gates has to say, you fail.

What size?
Before we see that someone has gone and ported Darwin over to Intel hardware? All the pieces (I think) are already out there.
That should make for some interesting benchmarks, DarwinPC vs. MkLinux!
When are we going to see brushed aluminum finish with fake chrome on the plastic parts? :)
These boxes just look like beige+ to me.
Do they win a prize?

Honestly, Rob, I don't see how coveting thy neighbor's wife is going to help you get one of these.
Just tried to get a peek at what's on your site, can't get in from my .gov workstation. :)
I've got to get out of this place.
That's the problem, I've got /.#8639 and /.#1282.
Or maybe it's just my split personality. At least I'm (we're?) not lonely.
Nice jacket, but why do the sleeves wrap around back?
Called up my page just to see that I'm 8639.
At least I've got the right name when I go to set preferences. Different number on that page, though. Hmmm...
WTF? You just looking to defend Gore?
