  1. You have to be a very insane programmer for that on Has the Glory Gone Out of Working In IT? · · Score: -1, Flamebait

There is still glory, but like somebody else has said, you need to be "head of the class".

No script hacks or small tweaks will do today.

I have been in IT as a programmer for about 2 years, and within those 2 years, I have gotten 2 promotions and employee of the quarter 3 times against a department of around 250-500 employees. That is glory right there.

If you want glory, it is here, and I hate to start flaming, but if you find no glory in this job, maybe you should look for something else. If you think the glory is gone and is not here, you are wrong.

I am young (26 years old) and already well received for what I do as one of the best programmers here. Do not get me wrong, I know I am not the best, yet. I am just good enough to be recognized as being one of the best in this department.

I see glory all the time. When you get to where I am as a programmer, it seriously makes you feel like a rock star of programming. Everybody in the department respects me and thinks I am an insane programmer.

No glory = Chilli's is hiring wait staff. I am sure you can have your non glory there.

Give the new kids out of college a chance to shine in this industry. You already hate it. Why would you go to a job you don't like? Are you dumb or something? Pick up your feet and stop making excuses. I love my job, and when I start to hate this job, I will move to another one.

I refuse to be one of those people like some of you /.ers that are bitching and moaning about a job you hate, but yet refuse to step away from. What are you running from? Are you that capitalistic that you would rather push some college kid to the side so that you can make money? Don't give me that "Well he can't do what I can" garbage, because I bet you he can (maybe the person is a she, you never know).

You old farts staying in your position, hating it, doing it only for the money are the reasons and only reasons why this job is only a job. You already hate what you do and pull all innovation out of this job. You would rather do your job your way that you have been doing for 10 years than to have a college kid with fresh ideas come in and try something new. Maybe you don't want to learn something new. Well, I heard Chilli's is looking for wait staff.

Computers and technology move too fast for you old farts to just sit on positions until you retire while us young dudes are searching high and low and can't find a good IT job that we are qualified for because you are just squatting on a job until you retire.

The computer industry does not need or want you old farts that hate this. This job is not for you. Go squat somewhere else. You already hate what you do, so let somebody in who will enjoy it and go be an old hater somewhere else.

Your time is over. I am 26 and I should be one of the old people, so leave the IT industry so that will happen.

P.S. All of us younger guys knows who you squatters are. You can't hide from us.

  2. I can tell most of the comments never played SWG on Sony To Encase Half the Star Wars: Galaxies Servers In Carbonite · · Score: 1, Informative

I am a pre and post NGE/CU person (NGE = New Game Enhancements, CU = Combat Upgrade). I actually stopped playing SWG in pre NGE because the game really sucked. It had nothing to do with the complexity. I love complex games. The game just had no direction. I was given a small tutorial and just dumped out there. Sure, it was cool that I was just dumped into the Star Wars Universe, but the complexity really hampered it (take a look at how simple WoW is if you even want to come at me about simple games sucking).

I will not defend everything about SWG, but there is a huge aspect that most people skip right over, which is space. Everytime SWG comes up, nobody even mentions space (i.e. JTL or Jump to Lightspeed).

Most people wrote SWG off without even doing anything in space. I have been playing SWG for over 3 years and my character on the ground is still not at max level, but I have a maxed out pilot with some incredible ship components.

I assure you that fighting pvp in space is not just flying in a straight line and going after the target. Well, you can go ahead and do that against me if you want and see what happens.

SOE could easily pull JTL out of SWG and have it its own game. It is honestly that good. Anybody I talk to about SWG will sit there and spout off the random retarded comments they read in places on the net, but every single person when trying to rip on SWG will completely leave JTL out of the picture as if that entire section of the game does not exist.

I have tried multiple MMO's based on the ground (SWG, Guild Wars, EQ, and a few more) and I can honestly say that ground MMO's all in all are just boring. When I say ground, I mean you are confined to that planet. You may have some type of mount that can fly, but in the end, the point is for your character to travel somewhere on foot, kill some stuff, and then move on.

JTL customization of ships is incredibly robust. I mean, you can literally pick the type of ship you want to fly based on the way you fly, and customize the ship parts based on the way you fly. Do you want to be the captain and manage a crew? Maybe you want some small and agile, etc. The list goes on and on of what you can do. You can fine tune anything from the engine and reactor up through the weapons, shields, and a bunch of other components (even the paint job and textures used for the ship can be customized).

You want to talk complexity and saying that SWG messed it up, JTL is still very complex. The only other game that even comes close to rivaling JTL is Eve Online (and that is basically an economy MMO wrapped in a space backdrop). Even EVE Online can't hit the customization of what you can do with your ship and how you fly it in JTL.

Everytime SWG comes up, watch, I am serious, watch how many people will rip on the game and either spout the same redundant stuff that was on the internet, or completely skip over and not even mention JTL.

JTL is a part of SWG. JTL is incredible. JTL was not completely revamped during NGE. Do not even start the, "Well maybe that is it problem. It needed a change" since most of you are just finding another outlet to vent about SWG on the ground changing.

Here is something I have not seen anybody post about: Your classes did not get destroyed. All of these people claim that after a few years of "fine tuning" their classes, they lose them, that is completely false information. People that kept their accounts through the transition also kept whatever character classes they had as well. So if the person had spent 2 years on a Chef/Bounty Hunter, when the transition took place, they still had a Chef/Bounty Hunter.

The change they did was that instead of over 20 specialization to pick from, they took it down to 9 and they included Jedi. One thing the preNGE people have bitched about since NGE is the fact that they had to work for Jedi, and then post NGE people came along and could just pick it.

Well, that means none of you are going to play Old Republic, right? Wel

    hahahahaha

Ok, I am a bad speller, Oh no! Oh, I didn't read the whole article! Of course not, the website went out of tresh-hold on me. Old man forgot to upgrade his account.

You have to fix what I mess up. I doubt that. You get paid 100k a year. Tell me right here right now that somebody else could not do your job? Be honest.

You are the reason why us younger people can't get jobs. I know for a fact that I can show you a thing or two.

Besides, you are the reason why my score is zero right now, and your score is already zero.

Should I even trust the post of a person that gets mad and gives people lower scores when they, in fact, have a score of zero.

    Wow, seriously.

I can play the lets quote everybody game as well.

"fix what numerous young college kids mess up in our company, and engineer solutions so they don't screw it up in the future."
Ok, so you are a programmer? You actually made the code personally that messed up your company? Every person in the IT industry I know that gets paid over 100k doesn't touch code, they have others do it for them.

    What languages do you know?

The other person that showed his credentials towards me, sure I listened to what he said. I listened very well. Yes, I did not give him a good response, but I will admit I listened. Your credentials is that you get paid alot of money.

I don't care how long you have been a manager or how long you have been programming, what languages do you know?

I tell you what Mr. 100k a a year, I will teach you Java. Right here, right now, I will play nice on slashdot and never post another bad thing if you let me teach you java.

How old am I, 25. I have had a programming job in our company for about 4 months, so I have about 4 months of experience.

Mr. 100k a year, do you know Java? I can teach it to you. I can teach you PHP, C++, but you have to be willing to learn.

Everything I posted repeats, because the message is clear, you have to be willing to learn in order to progress as a programmer.

Your skillset that you know and have right now will mean nothing in 18 months. Don't worry, that is the same with me as well. How are you going to prepare for the new technology coming out? Are you going to sit in your comfy chair and have the people under you worry about that? I know that is how it is done in most companies.

Just remember, the only reason why my score is zero is because somebody who totes a loud voice already had a score of zero.

Also, when you say "engineer solutions" that sounds like something where you make a plan and tell your employees to figure it out. So you are not really fixing the issue, you are telling others to fix the issue.

Oh yeah, and for somebody who makes 100k a year, why not sign up with slashdot? Are you afraid people might know who you are "Oh no, the humanity".

  4. Wow, I am a little Amazed on What Makes a Programming Language Successful? · · Score: 1, Flamebait

I bet I can tell you alot about this person and I have only read the article. He is over 40 and has been programming for over 10 years. Possible associates degree, even more unlikely is it being higher. He has good information, but I deal with these people all the time, it is annoying, and now slashdot is putting his information up.

Look, technology changes everyday. With the change in technology comes a change in everything around it, including programming languages. In order to be a good programmer, you have to know, and understand, many languages. It is your job. If you are unable to accept that, than it is time to either retire and let somebody else take your 100,000 salary or simply quit.

The best language translators know more than two languages. I know that is a little bit of a different example, but it still proves the point I was trying to make. You need to be versatile in order to do your job. If all you do is program in COBOL, then talk to 1974, because they want their programming language back.

I don't even like Java all that much, but know it, and know it well. I just don't like it because I do web based work and it is easier to do it in PHP. Speaking of PHP, the syntax is as similar to c++ as it is Java.

Somebody wrote an article without doing their homework. Once a PHP script is done running, it is done, and you need to use additional resources, like AJAX or Javascript, in order to get something else to run afterwards, where-as C++, with clever coding, can continue to run, but that clever coding would be done within C++.

Let me guess, your company wants to move from Python/COBOL/The Stone Age to Java, and you wrote an article to show why Java sucks? Guess what, you have to learn Java like all of us did in order to be successful. I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science without taking a single Java course, and I had to teach myself Java for my job.

Your job as a computer programmer is to do what you are told in the language you are told to do it in. No wonder it is so hard for us younger people to get jobs programming. Mr. I don't want to learn a new language so I am going to cry about it, cry all you want, but in the end, you need to quit your job. I get frusterated with you old people now doing your job good enough and holding the positions us young people are looking for. We are hungry and looking for a job, you have been doing Python since computers were made from vaccuums and refuse to do anything but what you are doing. Leave you job, we could do your job better than you in a day.

Every college kid we get in the company I work for does more than double the work load of any of you old people, and you old people do nothing but complain. Step down or shut up.
