  1. Parents need to be Parents on FTC Says Virtual Worlds Bad For Minors · · Score: 1, Interesting

If you are a parent and you are truly that worried, then stop paying for your kid to play WoW. Don't filter a MMO and downgrade it for us. It starts with filters and then just expands and makes the good online games dull. If you don't want your child to do something, don't let them. It is not Blizzard's or SOE's fault little Timmy showed his wang to his class, it is your fault. Maybe you should have taught him that is not acceptable to do. Not all parents are like this. Some parents out there still do a great job parenting, but the parents that want to censor games instead of just not letting their kids play them, GRR! (that is my way of not getting flagged for flamebait and stopping).

I just used Silverlight (yeah yeah, I know), and wrote a web app that can crawl the big name streaming video sites and get the video out of it and embed it in a web page created on the fly within silverlight, and then it will automatically go to full screen mode to have a TV like effect. It is not 100% perfect, but works well.

  16. Re:Pirates on MPAA Asks Again For Control Of TV Analog Ports · · Score: 0

I agree. Doing this will not stop pirating. It will actually give pirates another excuse to pirate. Some of the people ripping are incredibly bright and smart and can easily work around anything you throw at them. Just like what has been mentioned before, all they are trying to do is control their medium completely. When a consumer buys something, they should assume they own it. It should not be a situation of them just borrowing it or renting it. The more restrictions that are put on all media, the more people will pirate it. One item that seems to come up alot is computer games. You can easily look at some top selling games and see how much drm free code effected them. Some of those games even spawn homebrews that are so good that they get commercially released (Yes, I did buy counter strike for x-box). This is definately a 2 way thing. There are pirates out there that refuse to pay for a thing. There are also movie companies out there that want to charge me $1 just for looking at the dvd case to their new movie at Target. As to offering more goods, with the huge jump in technology, are they seriously saying that the reason why we get the shaft with way too much stuff is because of pirating? Movie stars still make millions upon millions for movies, so we know the industry is not hurting. When Christian Bale is paid $8.50 an hour to make a movie, then they can talk about the financial burden.

  17. Half and Half Works very well on Attack of the PowerPoint-Wielding Professors · · Score: 0

I just graduated recently with a degree in CS and I had an instructor who would do half and half. The class was data structures. He did this in a very good way. He would go over the theories and concepts of a data structure for the first half, and then he would actually keep his computer projected onto the screen while he was actually programming the data structure we just discussed. Of course, class participation was a must. When I say he was programming it, he was really just typing what we told him until the entire class got stuck. When we got stuck on a piece that we clearly did not know, he would go into great detail about that piece. Honestly, I learned more from that data structures class than any other class I took at college. Really, using PowerPoint is not bad if you do it correctly.

  18. This is Nintendo's trend on Handhelds on Nintendo Announces DSi XL · · Score: 0

Nintendo does this stuff with their handhelds. This is nothing new. With how well the DS is selling, they can afford to make multiple models. Chances are, in a year or 2, they will make another variant of the DS. Just look at how many revisions they did to the Gameboy if you think 4 is alot. As long as they can find ways to keep the DS fresh, they will continue to sell it extremely well, and knowing Nintendo, they will continue to find ways. Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the assumption that the GBA Micro was released while the DS was out, which means even through the DS being released, Nintendo still found a way to keep the GBA fresh. This is not Sega making dumb mistakes with hardware, this is Nintendo. They are making changes to the hardware like they normally do, and judging from the sales of the DS, they know what they are doing

  21. Societal Norms on Are Software Developers Naturally Weird? · · Score: 0

Normal is really what society says is normal.

This goes for many people that are seen as "wierd": there are people that do not care about what the societal norm is for being normal.

I think it is good. It is the same situation with dating. Most people will put on a persona when meeting a person they want to date, and then once you start heavily dating, the other person is surprised at the person they are dating since it is not the same person they met.

Many programmers are just good examples of people that do not care about the social norm since many of them have been tagged as outcasts for awhile anyway, so they might as well be themselves instead of trying to fit in.

People that try to fit in are not fully being themselves, which is sad. Some people will actually convince themselves in their head that they are different that who they are. Don't worry, it will all come back eventually.

If you are a nerd, do not be depressed about it, try to become a rockstar in the nerd field. Hey, Cliffy B did a pretty good job of doing that.

  22. C&C MMO Could work well on Command & Conquer MMO a Possibility? · · Score: 0

Let's face it, WoW started as WarCraft, which is a RTS.

I do not play WoW anymore, but what I noticed from WoW was that it was very close to a MMORTS. I say this because with the all the groups "raiding" (or as we should call it, zerging) and also using huge groups where certain people in each group with specific abilities are required to fight other groups or bosses. Honestly, if you could zoom out enough and not be centered on your character while a group was zerging or fighting a boss, you would see this as well.

Now for C&C, this would work very similar to WoW. The difference would be that there would not be as much magic, dragons, basically fantasty elements.

Now if they did this correct, it would not be a persistent world version of Battlefield, which is also a game distributed by EA. If they made this more point and click and not as much FPS, there is great potential.

WoW has proven that you can take a concept from a game that is based as a RTS and make it, obviously, incredibly successful.

What I do not like is the people here that hate their job.

Sure, it is /., so people will be cynical, but anybody that hates what they do or thinks IT is not all it is cracked up to be should find another job.

I am not directing what I said to people at my job (unless you secretly know my username and are actually working where I work busting me posting on ./)

I hate when people, even on ./, will say how much this job sucks. It really doesn't.

I can tell you did not read everything, because I never once said that I hate what I do. I love being a programmer. It is the best job I have ever had.

What I do not like are the old farts that are squatting on the job only for pay. My point is that they are only working for the pay and not the passion. There are lots of programmers that are very passionate about what we do, and have to deal with some random old guy with an attitude that thinks they are better than everybody else. That same old person hates their job and is squatting until they retire.

I know this from experience because I see them in my department all the time. They do not do what I do, they are just in the same department.

Obviously with your comment and vague response, you are not really in the industry, but more of an outsider (and the fact that you quoted me saying how long I have been doing this as if that was the focal point of everything I said).
