This take on HR is from platothefish's blog at www.multiversity.blogspot.com. A hillarious blog.

"Can I just mention that your ideas to rename HR whilst amusing are unlikely to be take up by the university"

In light of the realisation that the term Human Resources is antithical to our diversity policies (which by the way were crafted by HR) I hereby suggest some alternatives:

    * 'The department of paper, rules and dogma'
    * 'Directorate (in an equal opportunities non directive type of way of course) of Valued Employees'
    * 'The communist party' - I think party has a nice focus to it, different to directorate comrade
    * 'The group of really nice people trying to get other really nice people to comply with the rules and policies we design to make it look as if we are really useful department.'
    * 'Slowing things down and stopping untidy innovation team'
    * A bit radical this - 'Administration.'
    * 'Directorate of creative mavericks and ideas control'
    * 'The Empire' - why is the only part of the university that appears to be in full blown growth, 'Human Resources'?"

Hmmm, interesting, sailplanes of the same era, made of Fibre Reinforced Plastic, have a very similar history, in all the areas you mention.

Modern sailplanes have been made a lot lighter, due to the experience gained back then. The older gliders, in many cases 30 years old, can if well maintained look like new. Luckily for sailplanes, we can keep the gelcoat mostly dry, so a refinish
    is *relatively* easy.

Glider pilots developed a low cost collision avoidance system called FLARM.

The small-size, low-cost, low-power device FLARM broadcasts its own position and speed vector (as obtained with an integrated GPS) over a license-free ISM band radio transmission. At the same time it listens to other devices based on the same standard. Intelligent motion prediction algorithms predict short-term conflicts and warn the pilot accordingly by acoustical and visual means. FLARM incorporates a high-precision WAAS 16-channel GPS receiver and an integrated low-power radio transceiver.

Surpisingly I agree with you on this one.

Heres how we do it in OZ.

All paper ballots. Voters must be on the electoral roll 2 weeks before the election, at a minimum.

At all times opening and closing of ballot boxes is done in the presence of representatives of the political parties and the electoral commision.

When you go to the polling station, you are asked your name and ID, which is then marked as voted on the electoral roll.

Votes are then counted under the eyes of party scrutinneers from all parties that wish to have them present.

Easy quick and very hard to game.

It is a complete mystery to me that anyone would think that well organized paper ballots are not by far superior to electronic voting.
