I like to sometimes use bleeding edge stuff, where sometimes RPM (and I'm assuming DEB) would not be available. I know it is a real pain in the ass to deal with RPM's and your own compiled programs, is DEB pretty much the same in that respect?
I usually can type in link naturaly, but I had to peview that message over 5 times trying to figure out how to enter the tag with brackets. I never did remember how to do that.
I thought I warped it so far to the left that it would have to be taken as a joke, but I guess I didn't go far enough.
The only reason I even did that (besides the caffene coursing through my body) is because someone attacked me (not as far as I just went) when I posted the same quote a few weeks ago.
However when I was attacked, the phrase "dead white guy" was used:)
Just trying to make everyone's day a little more surreal
I actually listened to this show for the first time here. I'm working and it's very slow (Penn State's mainframe usage is hoovering at about 0.00000001%) So I have time.
It's completly without useful content, revelance, and insight, but it IS funny as hell.:)
I guess I'll give the others a listen since I'm here for another 4 hours:(
You sound like some gun loving wacko spouting off what some dead white guy said.
All that stuff isn't revelant in today's world. Safety is the most important thing we can have. I'm refering mainly to safety from ourselves, not oppressive govermments (that way we can dismantle the armed forces and still sell weapons to countries that hate us)
Besides, if you are trying to claim some "essental liberty" it's only because you have something to hide.
Or is the 'device driver is needed for Linux' just a diversionary tactic? It seems like if Xing or one of the other software publishers had produced a Freely available (not the concept of 'free' people try to fabricate, but freely available) player for Linux, without source code, it wouldn't be enough. Has the more cooperative wing of the Linux community tried to get a 'free' player produced by any of the vendors?
Perhaps you are right, but then what would BSD do? How about BEOS, or if the next PalmPilot has a really good display and a way to hook up a dvd player...
My point is, with the source code, it can be ported to ANY OS. If Xing produced a viewer it would probably be a RedHat binary and that would still leave many SOL.
Either way this case is irrevelant, there WILL be a DVD player for linux. Maybe the only way to get it will be to pull it from a warez page, but it will exist. The code is out and cannot be put back.
since lawyers representating the plaintiffs could be reading Slashdot.org
I hope they are, they might learn something. As for pulling slashdot, that is as likely as deja.com losing it's domain because of slanderous comments on usenet.
If, in some strange twist of fate that does happen, I would not want to be in the plaintiff's shoes. They would be pissing off a lot of intelligent, computer savvy folks. Not to mention our growing script kiddie population:)
Distribution my ass. Talk to real people sometime, not fanatics.
Please explain? I'm both a certified Windows and Unix person and I'm not sure what reasoning you are using.
Same Kernel, same base utilities, same basic programs, same file structure, etc. The only differences are really in which software they install (most are the same anyway) and the installer program itself.
These different flavours of Linux are very hard for the world to get used to. Why isn't there just one O/S?
Because there will always be some who says "I can make it better than that". The great part is (unlike some other OSes), you can.
The world will just have to get used to it, this really makes for a better system. You can download the source code to just about any linux program and compile on all of these systems, or you can use packages (rpm, deb), so there is compatibility between them.
Like, yeah, man.. Redhat used to be cool..I like their older stuff, but then they sold out & got all popular & stuff. They suck, dude..even my MOM uses Redhat now. It's so uncool.
When they release a double live album, you know they have sold out.
If you read the article, Fox.com always intended to make their site accessible by any browser on any platform. It was simply that they had time constraints and so released the site initially with only IE and Netscape support. So fox.com changed nothing as a result of the complaints.
Sure, I'd say that too if I just pissed off a huge customer base. We'll never know if that's the case or not. Either way, an improvement was brought about, whether it would have been anyway is anyone's guess.
A balance IS needed. Simply including alt tags on pictures and (if necessary) making sure there is a "low bandwith" or even plain text version available is not difficult at all.
Red Hat is Linux as far as the general public is concerned and they now have the market capitalization to keep it that way. Why would anyone use this distro anyway?
However the general public has very little bearing on anything that is happening in the linux community. There is a massive user base that can't be called general public.
And no matter how much money RH has, they cannot own linux, it is open source, as is most (all?) of the software on RH's distro.
Look if you pick an operating system based on what is popular, go with Windows.
Actually this is wrong. Debian probably has the most followers in the open source development community. RedHat is seen by many to be too commercial, while debian is 100% "pure" open source.
There will always be a market for it (IMHO), perhaps not with PHBs, but within the community.
Yeah, they should all be conformist, suit and tie kind of guys right? Hell, we all should. I guess everyone can't achieve the high level of sheep.
As you venture away from the computer into the real world, you will find that there are *gasp* all kinds of people out there, and they all don't look and act like you.
Besides the all the errors with thinking the web is the internet, you also forgot that someone who is blind or uses some kind of audio "reader" to browse web pages needs a certin amount of text in the page.
Here is another news flash, a page can contain all the flashy, tastless, macromedia crap you want, and still have text support.
And you are wrong on the point about FOX catering to the needs of their customers. Appearently they recieved enough complaints that they decided to change the accessibility of their site so that everyone can view it. Same rational you gave, with the opposite result.
I always said Microsoft should drop the software part and stick to what they do well, hardware. Their mice and joysticks have always worked very well for me.
This is a flat out misconception. The federal government has actually been in a pattern of returning power to the states over the past 10 years or so.
Really? I invite you to check out on of the many illegal and unconstitutional evecutive orders our esteemed leader attemped to slip through in between granting favors for money:
You may want to try reading the federalist papers or other writings by the framers of our government and see what the government was meant to be. It stands in stark contrast to what we see today.
Obviously, people have trouble dealing with too much freedom on occaison.
There is really no such thing. As long as you don't interfere with the rights* of others (real rights, not "right to never be offended"), than you should enjoy all the rights you have. If someone is too stupid to own a gun, and they shoot themself, who's fault is it? Since when did the federal government think it's job is to protect us from ourselves?
* For a list of "real" rights, see the Bill of Rights, listed in order of importence.
I would hate for them to become like cell phones (y'know they might cause brain tumors but we've already gotten so used to using them it's hard to stop)
I keep hearing that, but I've never heard of a single case where that happened. I think it's just tech paranoia. Does anyone have any conclusive proof of this kind of thing?

I've used RH since 4.0 came out, and I've been really looking into Debian lately.
Could anyone who has made that switch throw some info to me? It it worth it? What advantages does Debian have over RH (and any other for that matter)?
