Yes, but experience in area Y != experience in area X. No one, no matter how good, is going to master a programming language in a week or even a month. As long as the new hire actually worked and studied in college, he'll be much better in area X than the old guy just trying to learn it. Yes, I'm well aware that once you know one programming language it's easy to pick up another. That doesn't change the fact though that it still takes time to learn it - it just takes less than if you had no programming experience at all.

Exactly - that's how union jobs work. People being paid based on age leads to no motivation to work hard (or to use the Office Space line "just hard enough to not get fired"). Why? Because they know that they won't get paid any more due to their age. If you want employees to work hard, you have to be willing to reward them for it.

It's entirely fair. A company doesn't just one day hire someone to fill a position - they have meetings and plan how many people they need to hire for what position and they spend weeks (or more) reviewing resumes and interviewing candidates. The Senior Dev knew that they were looking for someone with skill X and if he didn't bust his ass learning it so that he could stay relevant, then he has no room to complain about someone else getting hired with skill X. Why do you think it's not fair to pay people based off their value to the company?

"Blood libel" makes perfect sense? I never heard the phrase before yesterday, and I couldn't make any sense of what it could mean when I read it.

I'd never heard it before either, but it made perfect sense given what they're accusing her of. Because she said that whats-her-name was a target to beat in the election, they're trying to claim that she somehow made this guy kill her. Thus, they are committing libel (because it's print) over a shooting (you know the phrase "blood on your hands") - put them together and you get blood libel.

It is a fact that Palin put out a map with corsshairs over Gifford's district.

Yes, to mark it as an election that they wanted to win. Companies and politicians use that same image all the time to mark a business / personal target - it has nothing in the slightest to do with guns, and you damn well know it. Now, there's the much more rational explanation of the fact that Giffords is pro-illegal in Arizona and that due to everything they've gone through with illegals, someone's bound to snap and start shooting politicians who are pro-illegal (honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner). This is nothing but an excuse to smear Republicans because a person (haven't read much about him since I've been busy, but I've heard he himself is a Democrat) didn't like Gifford's policies.

I find Palin to be as much of a moron as everyone else. The difference between you and I is that I'm not going to blame her for someone else's choices just to promote a given political party.

That was 4 GB of data in one evening. For that month as a whole, I went through like 11.5 GB. As for what I was doing? Well you see, with Android, I can tether without being charged an extra $30-$50 per month for a measly 2 GB of data. As such, I use it on my laptop when I'm not home (work, grad school) and I also use the nice 700 KB/sec 4G speeds for bittorrent.

However, long before I started tethering my Evo, just downloading apps, doing email, web browsing, and the occasional youtube video I was going through around 3GB per month.

My question is, how little are you "doing" on your phone that you ONLY use 100 MB per month? My email alone (which isn't tons) comes out to way more than that a month.

Sure, usage patterns vary, but based on numbers that AT&T published last year, I'm solidly in the mainstream, and you occupy the top fraction of a percent of data users.

Yes, because as with the majority of gadgets, most people buy them to get in on the craze and then never use them much after the first couple of months. This is true for the majority of people with computers, game consoles, smart phones, and any other gadget - once the "cool new toy" factor wears off, most people stop using it. Only a small percent of people play their game console as much today as when they bought it 5 years ago.

Any carrier would be glad to see you go.

Well of course! Why would they have someone like me who pays them money in exchange for service when they could have someone like you who pays them money and then (essentially) never uses the service? That's free money in their pockets from you - every business would prefer if people just walked up, handed them money, and then left without incurring any cost to the business. However, I virtually never make calls on my phone (I used 5 minutes last month), so they make up for it there.
