  1. Re:Comp Sci. Students & MSFT on Will CS Students Switch From Microsoft? · · Score: 1

What's the point in teaching a course on computer science using an operating system orientated towards users?

Yea, right. No need to concern yourself with an OS that all the users of your program will use -- based on that you said "[windows is] an operating system orientated toward users" and that users are the people that use software and you are _writing_ software.

    No need at...

    Now, that is logic sucide

At the University I attend the labs run NT4/200/XP with MS Visual Studio with very few linux boxs with gcc(which were setup by the students so that people could try different OS's and not just think there is only MS)

However, My point is that the University's Platform and compiler is Windows and Visual Studio. If you want to program in gcc that's fine, but if you have problems(and need a professors help) you better have a visual studio version setup too.

Of all the CO-OP interviews I've had, I'm yet to find a place whose primary development platform is linux.

(almost)Everyone wants people who know MS/VS and want a windows-based solution.

People who are not new to the web are going to be able quickly determine that this(http://fuckgeneralmotors.com/) is not ford's work. However, someone new to the web is going to say I went to http://fuckgeneralmotors.com/ and then it loaded up the ford site. Since I didn't do anything when I loaded the site, then it must be ford's work.

I think they should have to have somekind of statement on that page saying they have nothing to do with the ford motor company.

There is also programmable keyboards -- Like the Proffessional which has "Programmable Key Layout - anyone can easily set keys to suit individual needs" and has on-board memmory for 24 macros holding up to 142 Characters each.

The Professional QD for PC (Qwerty/Dvorak convertible) costs $355.50, which the simplier Professional for PC costs $319.50.

It's not a matter of if you can switch to a different layout. It's a matter of (1) do you want to spend so much on a keyboard? and (2) do you really want to have to take your keyboard with you(to work, ...)?

There is more information at the kinesis website on there keyboards.

I think everyone who surf's the 'net has to resign themselves to the fact that there will always be ads on the 'net and on TV for that matter.

I totally agree with you when you say "I'd prefer seeing things that interest me".

This is what I liked so much about the free ISP servers where most of them ( that I used) asked what your ad preferences are. However that never seemed to effect their ads.

I would prefer ad targeted to what I want with out my personal info attached.

I would like them to know: this is user XYZ and he likes these type of things and hates these typed of things. And they don' have any other demographics on me and especially would NOT have my mailing address.

  10. server-side ad processing on Gator Will Replace Ads On Sites · · Score: 1

I find it odd that ads aren't processed on the server side.

It's not like the server can't pass on to the ad server the browser information.

It's seems like that would be harder for programs like gator to launch ad windows overtop of where the site's ads are or the ones that draw a transparent image. If this was done on the server side and the browser was dished up a static html page the browser wouldn't even know the ad servers IP address.

The content site request an ad from the ad server. The content site inserts the ad into the request html page and servers the page. The requesting browser wouldn't know what IP address the content site got the ad from nor should they really know the ad is indeed an ad.

And wouldn't this solve the problem(for the ad companies) for the programs that disallow ads to be shown by using proxys to block know urls of ad servers. Because they can't see any url's with in the html file to disallow.

    But, I'm probably wrong.

Those bastards! They went and re-released their product with a non-open source license! Why bother keeping with their wishes in mind? Look how badly they have WRONGED you. How dare them?

This is just an example of attaching judgment by association.

    I like A
    A is associated with B
Therefore all good and bad things about A are now attached to B.

    I like open source software
    linux is open source software
    Therefore I must like linux

This company is the greatest company ever and their very very wonderful fully-featured without being bloated software is the best software ever. Just because they do something you like (release software under an open source license), but when they do something you don't like(re-release with a closed source software license) then their the devil(just imagine the how the water boys' mom says it.). Now their the worse company ever and their product sucks and is bloated.

Sadly this is an all to common line-of-thought on slashdot.

Anything remotely related to Microsoft is the devil!
Any company that doesn't embrace open source is the devil!

This kind of thinking (or lack there of) is extremely narrow-minded and shows a lack of intelligence. It's zealots that slam procuts/companys/causes/et al.(that they believe to be anti their position)without just cause that tarnish their own cause.

  12. This setup eliminates a an IDE device on Select or Lock Hard Drives... With a Key · · Score: 1

If you have to have an IDE cable to connect both devices and you can only select one device you can only have one of two devices on that cable working. So instead if you was using filesharing between other operating systems you have now lost that on the one IDE device that isn't selected.

Lets say you have 5 IDE devices you want to use and your motherboard only has two IDE controllers(like most boards). With this board you limited to four IDE devices.

With this your limited to 3 devices using one of these and 2 devices using two of these.

If you have all your IDE devices wired up to this and from it you could select the four IDE devices you wanted to enable. This would really rock when you number of devices is greater then 4. And if you wanted you use a different device you could just boot-down change the settings on it and you wouldn't have to open up the case anymore to switch IDE devices.

That would solve one of my problems. I do have remove hard-drives to transfer some stuff, but that ok. I would like to be able to select what device I want without having to mess with the cabling and jumpers. I used to doing that.

First you stop putting the screws back in the case, then you stop putting the side panel back on all together. I don't leave the side panel on my main computer anymore, so I don't like others using my computer because I'm scared they'll mess with some and short something or gets splashed on the inside of the computer.
