"No matter what you do...you HAVE to know how to work your best deal if you are going to keep your money."
That's assuming that society provides no protections against predatory business practices, obviously true in the U.S. and thankfully not so much in other places (U.S. citizen here BTW).
"You can't do anything for a living without also being decent at business. The thing is....the business rules have changed now...adapt or go extinct."
It's people like you that make the world suck for people who are brilliantly talented and who don't want to predatory business pricks. How would Einstein have done if born into your brave new world? Hint he used his paychecks as bookmarks so I don't think his business sense was too keen, according to you therefore he ought not to have a living.
Wow you totally misinterpreted what I said. I went to Oberlin College that has a huge conservatory and I listen to a lot of classical music. There is nothing wrong with museum pieces, in fact I think we ought to fund museums more heavily, and that we would be better people if we had more historical knowledge. My point though is that when we listen to classical music that we tend to hear it as historical in nature, and not part of the current living culture. All I am saying is that we should read religious texts in the same literary somewhat detached way, if we take the apocalyptic fantasies as literal and current and live or die by them we are doomed IMO, if not, not. I am terrified that WWIII could start over the delusional fantasies surrounding the Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary:
What a stupid sick reason for a possibly world ending as a self fulfilling prophecy world war!:( OTH If we read religious books as literature that while not literally true offers fine metaphors and parables then we may learn from them as beautiful deep stories without being consumed by them. Even Richard Dawkins in the God Delusion says that we ought to study religious texts in this way because they are woven into western culture.
All 3 fundamentalisms suck including that of Bin Laden, Bush and the Likudnics! The only way we will see peace is to move to a secular society and beyond tribal mythologies. Yes can we can still read the old books in the same way that we listen to an 18th century symphony as a museum piece, to believe in and fight for these books will be the death of us all in a age of jets, air craft carries, cruise missiles WMDs, etc.
Yes and I'm quite sure anti black racism was prevalent in the south in the 50s, it doesn't make it right then or now. This is the 21st century, grow up and treat women with respect for their mental capabilities or you will be forever known as a dick.
There is more of a sex object and ONLY a sex object, big difference. Your grandfather description describes women as only sex objects in terms of their boobs, etc. Again I am quite certain that you'd be highly offended to be treated SOLELY in that fashion, it's called hypocrisy and it's a big character flaw if you didn't already get the news.
Advertisers and corporations indeed turned Sir Berners Lee's original idea of the web as an open publishing medium into a rats nest of advertising and proprietary and security nightmare formats.
And what is this nice apparel? Would it be a me too suit, me too "business casual," or me too emo-ware (tm) from the mall? Although I am on the art geek graphic designer end of the spectrum I say a pox on "nice apparel" and fall into the don't care about clothes get it at the thrift store camp. The old hippies and civil rights people got it right when they said we ought to judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin (or clothes). And note this isn't something we should get mad at women about as in the very first post but the fashion industry and media industry that promotes a shallow culture. The fashionista women are every bit as much used by the fashion industry through being pressured to buy over priced crap to fit in as the "uncool" geeks rejected by the fashonista "culture." Know your true enemy and fight them not your fellow people being victimized as per usual by the corporations.
People like you set back the our evolution towards a more decent humane culture by hundreds of years. How would you like to be viewed as a sex object only as you seem to be viewing women?
Yes lets give governments that have quite literally killed hundreds of millions in the last hundred years a sole monopoly on firepower. Give the big murders the most guns and the weak and defenseless no defense, really smart. Who is going to guard the guard again? I keep forgetting...
Actually the right doesn't really have a thinker like Chomsky. Now before you think this is just a flame I'll say that the right does have intellectuals but that the thought process is very different, right wing intellectuals are more about process and ideals than observation like Chomsky. Thus you get right wing thinkers like Russell Kirk (who I do respect),
and Ann Rand who argue that as long as the process is "moral" that any outcome is acceptable. For leftists on the other hand observation of outcomes is key, that's why you here about "social justice" on the left with specific examples of sweatshop conditions, American empire and then specific examples of CIA coups in the third world, wars of aggressions, etc. I will say that one of the big reasons leftism appeals to me is that on the whole it's a more empirically based philosophy. One can blovate about the "free market" producing utopia until the cows come home but if the actual outcome is tremendous inequality, suffering, and environmental destruction then perhaps there is a flaw that is not captured in the idealistic model of "the market?"
The thing that characterised upper middle class white people after 1989 was a sense of triumphalism. The cold war was over, the world had unanimously chosen the best way of running things (sic), and it was the end of history. Essentially, we were told all the battles had been won and there were no more challenges left for our generation to take up. People say 9/11 'changed everything' but in reality it changed very little, for the most part western society still smugly grinds away as it did before. The daily life of young people is largely unaffected.
So the prevailing feeling is apathy. You go to school, go to college, have kids and die. There's nothing else to do. The music reflects this.
I corrected your post. you're welcome. Just because most of slasdot is composed of upper middle class white people in the U.S. don't just ass-ume that eveyone in the world is having the same experience. Yes upper middle class white people experienced enui in the 90s and oughts, others didn't and have made more interesting music because of it, perhaps you should listen to Buena Vista Social Club to see what I mean.
There is still good innovative music it just isn't on the radio or tee vee, go listen to Mr. Bungle, Andrew Bird, Calexico, Neko Case, The Arcade Fire, DJ Spooky, Howe Gelb, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, and then get back to me about how "terrible" today's music is, and BTW I am 41 years old and by no means a stuck up hipster, there is just no excuse for being stuck in a rut and bitching about today's music with a whole internet out there to learn what sounds good.
It has nothing to do with people desiring more conservative media as the grandparent states and everything to do with people exhausted by 9+ hour work days, then dealing with household chores, being quite literally hypnotized by flashing graphics and loud insistent voices. It worked for Hitler and unfortunately it seems to work for our new right wing authoritarians bent on taking over the world as well.
I am honestly surprised the Chinese haven't come up with an OS with the best features of OS X, Windows, and Linux based on BSD and stuck it on a 299 desktop computer with the power of a mac mini. Imagine how many of those they'd sell. I'd buy one...
If you want to work on macs it's not rocket science, they have standard P.C. SATA drives, standard P.C. ram (do a google search for exact specs), standard P.C. processors, and don't require driver downloads to get most things working other than obscure printers. If you want a piece of paper to give to a PHB to PROVE you are a mac tech yeah you'd have to get a cert, I assume that'd be at the same place you'd learn to use Final Cut Pro, again do a google search.
Not only are we divided but over the stupidest issues imaginable. If you think the people who sit of the board of directors of the member banks of the Federal reserve who inflate the economy and then make immense bank when it collapses give a damn about abortion, the 2nd amendment, gays, or prayer in school you are kidding yourself. They know they'll make big bank regardless of whether a Ripoffagain, or Dimocrap wins, because both parties support corporate globalization, fiat currency, and the military industrial complex. The military industrial complex doesn't give a damn whether it's blatant war for oil and Israel like the Repigs give us or "humanitarian" interventions like the Dimocraps give us as long as they making the tanks and bullets. They laugh at the earnest suckers who argue over abortion and prayer in school while they take their wheel barrows full of gold to the bank, count on it. The only thing that is going to stop them is a coalition of Green/lefty radicals (where I fall BTW), and Ron Paul/Pat Buchanan, Paul Craig Roberts type honest true conservatives banding together to reform the government from top to bottom. Until that happens the globalist corporations and bankers will laugh at us regardless of which sock puppet party we choose. And we will be left holding the bag of a decayed infrastructure, a Karl Rove polarized populace over pseudo issues, global environmental decay, a gutted economy, and an utter lack of preparation for a post fossil fuel 21st century. China and Europ will eat our lunch and not even burp for what's left of the U.S. will be a third world shell like Brazil.
It seems ultimately what matters in a capitalist society is how much a company makes, and how good a quality a product or service it turns out. As long as it does well under those metrics, and it does well with managers making judgment calls on the qualitative not quantitative internal workings of the company like I.T., why does anyone even need to both to try to quantify things that don't lend themselves to easy or accurate quantification?
I am running a 3 year old G5 tower that has all the eye candy of Vista and is playing MP3s while using the network at 100%, same thing running Linux on an even more ancient P4 notebook and Ubuntu 7.04. Hell even my PIII box with XP sp2 has no problem doing this. M.S. has no excuses for this kind of screwup in 2007.

"Maybe the things that are written in the Bible are merely stupid destructive metaphors and parables?" I corrected your post, you're welcome.
Yes that what I meant when I said "delusional." I am well aware of the scheming of the neo-cons and oil people.

Just watch the movie Brazil to find out what this will like.
Excellent point! "Truthiness" (Colbert) sucks...

It's not "flamebait" but a sincere opinion in response to the grandparent, sorry it gores your OX, sometimes sincere opinions do that, shrug.

11. Bring up how VHS tapes and cassette tapes did NOT destroy the movie and music industries.
