Wow you totally misinterpreted what I said. I went to Oberlin College that has a huge conservatory and I listen to a lot of classical music. There is nothing wrong with museum pieces, in fact I think we ought to fund museums more heavily, and that we would be better people if we had more historical knowledge. My point though is that when we listen to classical music that we tend to hear it as historical in nature, and not part of the current living culture. All I am saying is that we should read religious texts in the same literary somewhat detached way, if we take the apocalyptic fantasies as literal and current and live or die by them we are doomed IMO, if not, not. I am terrified that WWIII could start over the delusional fantasies surrounding the Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_Mount

What a stupid sick reason for a possibly world ending as a self fulfilling prophecy world war! :( OTH If we read religious books as literature that while not literally true offers fine metaphors and parables then we may learn from them as beautiful deep stories without being consumed by them. Even Richard Dawkins in the God Delusion says that we ought to study religious texts in this way because they are woven into western culture.

The old hippies and civil rights people got it right when they said we ought to judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin (or clothes). And note this isn't something we should get mad at women about as in the very first post but the fashion industry and media industry that promotes a shallow culture. The fashionista women are every bit as much used by the fashion industry through being pressured to buy over priced crap to fit in as the "uncool" geeks rejected by the fashonista "culture." Actually the right doesn't really have a thinker like Chomsky. Now before you think this is just a flame I'll say that the right does have intellectuals but that the thought process is very different, right wing intellectuals are more about process and ideals than observation like Chomsky. Thus you get right wing thinkers like Russell Kirk (who I do respect),

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Kirk

and Ann Rand who argue that as long as the process is "moral" that any outcome is acceptable. For leftists on the other hand observation of outcomes is key, that's why you here about "social justice" on the left with specific examples of sweatshop conditions, American empire and then specific examples of CIA coups in the third world, wars of aggressions, etc. I will say that one of the big reasons leftism appeals to me is that on the whole it's a more empirically based philosophy. One can blovate about the "free market" producing utopia until the cows come home but if the actual outcome is tremendous inequality, suffering, and environmental destruction then perhaps there is a flaw that is not captured in the idealistic model of "the market?"

  16. Upper middle class white people only... on Interesting Admissions From Record Industry · · Score: 1

The thing that characterised upper middle class white people after 1989 was a sense of triumphalism. The cold war was over, the world had unanimously chosen the best way of running things (sic), and it was the end of history. Essentially, we were told all the battles had been won and there were no more challenges left for our generation to take up. People say 9/11 'changed everything' but in reality it changed very little, for the most part western society still smugly grinds away as it did before. The daily life of young people is largely unaffected.

So the prevailing feeling is apathy. You go to school, go to college, have kids and die. There's nothing else to do. The music reflects this.

I corrected your post. you're welcome. Just because most of slasdot is composed of upper middle class white people in the U.S. don't just ass-ume that eveyone in the world is having the same experience. Yes upper middle class white people experienced enui in the 90s and oughts, others didn't and have made more interesting music because of it, perhaps you should listen to Buena Vista Social Club to see what I mean.
