I host with www.he.net. They've been really awesome, they're speed is great, and they have really good tech folks. Be warned, however, that it's not for the newbie. They don't like to hold hands, but then again that's why they're pricing is so reasonable. (At least it has been in my experience) You get a shell account, the servers run Linux/Apache, and they have mySQL databases, PHP, and all the extra bells and whistles.
Anyway, no, I don't work for them. But they're cool and so deserve some free publicity.:-)
I played with TCP/IP packet back when I was 12 or so and every NOS BBS program had code stolen/borrowed from the original by "Phil Karn KA9Q".. I never figured you actually existed.. Kind of like a legend to me..:-)
Too bad the packet world dried up and died here. (Eastern Iowa). Therefore I became the only node around and that was back before the Internet was cheap enough for me to stay connected a do some packet tunneling. *sigh* I'd love to get back into it, but it seems like everyone around here sold all their TNCs and turned off their computers.
Yes! I will second that. I've had back problems my whole life. Only recently have I started to go to a chiropracter(sp?) about it. The change is immense. Simply getting things back into order on a regular basis has imporved everything from backpain to regular sickness. (I haven't been really sick since I started going (about 4 years now) That might not say much, but if you knew me before that time I was sick ALL THE TIME (especially in winter months)). I think there's a much larger connection between your spine and overall health than most people think.
I would love to be able to control things just by thinking. I think most people would.
Of course then I might as well get rid of my body. I already don't use it enough anyway. And if I could just attach my brain to a cool little robotic platform with some legs and arms (if I ever needed them) and a bunch of fancy transmitters and stuff I could just interface with the TV and the computer without a problem. Plus a direct link would get rid of the monitor and it's radiation, and my hands wouldn't hurt anymore. Oh, and my typing speed would go up a few hundred thousand words per second.:-)
I have two concerns, however..
1. If it became possible to be this closely linked with a computer system/network, I would fear that humanity would come to resemble the Borg. Sure, it would be cool in some respects, but we would lose all individuality eventually because implants would make it so easy to just query the "net" almost like it's another limb. And we would basically be picking each other's brains (in a sense) all the time. Plus, who would need a web server? I'm sure a system would come about where a query would be put out on the "net" and someone who knew the answer would respond. This would all occur nearly automatically because our brains would grow to adapt to the new senses and limbs we seem to have. Eventually all of your personal knowledge may be simply on the network for all to see/use because your brain, in an effort to deal with the load, stops asking your conscious self for permission and just feeds out the data. Then again, it would certainly increase the human knowledge base as everyone plugged in wouldn't need to learn things or go to school to re-learn old tricks. But at the same time creativity would also be lost since I believe that individual experiences and perspectives fuel creativity and genius. Eventually we would all have the same knowledge learned in the same way and thus potentially miss out on obvious answers to problems or questions. Aside from it making a good story, why should the Borg have to assimilate anything? They have enough bodies and brains to solve most any problem and adapt to it instantly, yet they have to conquer. My answer to that is: they have no creativity since all their knowledge has been gained from one source that has been filtered over time to reduce clutter and thus questions only have one answer and that answer is right. You, being a part of the collective, would have no reason to question that answer and then society would stall until a new element was introduced--thus we have assimilation. So, in a possible future where we all have implants and our kids are born with implants and eventually we just get rid of our obsolete bodies and grow brains in vats (until we don't even need to do that anymore--totally digital life form), we would all eventually become rather complacent and quite possibly drive each other insane. It's either that or we start building giant cube-shaped space ships and go looking for trouble.

(Sorry if the above is rather messed up, but I'm often told I'm insane, so I imagine that has something to do with it.:-)
They have't hung out at 4.5 all *that* long.. There have been downloadable updates for 4.5.1 and then 4.5.2 (current). Maui (the codename for the next BeOS release) may very well be announced/released at Comdex. If it is or is not a free upgrade is so far unknown. So, if you're worried about paying for an old version, I would wait until after Comdex.
But, if you really want to give it a shot, Be has a good record of offering at least one major update to new owners for free. So there's a good chance you bought it now you would get the next release no matter what. But I can't guarentee anything.
Lasers can be blocked easily, bounced away from the target easier, scatterd with space dust, and the planets are in constant rotation. If your target is on the other side of the sun, how do you get it? At least with radio you have some chance.. (A pretty small one due to the sun's massive radition, I suspect, but at least a chance) That's a bit of an extreme example, though.
And radio is probably cheaper and easier to work with. (dunno, but a laser with the power needed to cut through the background radiation in space would probably be much more expensive (and bigger) than a radio transmitter..)
WARNING: Above info could be totaly wrong. I'm not even close to an expert in such things. Just my somewhat educated opinion.
Well.. Considering that I think they use FreeBSD for their servers I guess you can give BeOS a try after all.. Better trash that FreeBSD partition, though....
I was webmaster for one for several years (I wasn't even out of high school at the time) and they expected me to answer web-related calls from stupid users and code a really huge dynamic system for a client and maintain the web server that was also all dynamic and allowed clients to use a web browser to configure e-mail, files, cgis, etc, etc. (We did that all in-house) Plus I had to go to school most of the day.
Needless to say, I'm not there anymore. It was impossible to get anything done with that kind of load and that many interruptions.
I've been watching the list for awhile and it would seem they have even re-wrote the firmware in the kit itself. And the have libraries and stuff so you can code with gcc if you like.
I fall in the middle.. College is good for making future contacts and allies. It is also good for learning how to read people. Don't go for the education (since you won't get one), go for the interactive experience between real humans. (And try to get a date..:-) And I don't let life pass me by. I let college do that.
Oh well. At least we got to play with computers and learn C++ and stuff. (By learn I mean: Read the book.) Of course I already knew most of that anyway. Oh well.
I still think it's bad when the senior project at my school is a VB program. *sigh*
Heck.. Go to my page ( gimmick.org ) and see what I work on in my spare time. Beats the snot out of a VB program, that's for sure. (And the webpage rocks too..:-)
As a college freshman and 1/2 in CS, I can tell you that I am learning very little directly from all these classes and things. I usually sit off to the side and catch up on sleep. However, I still manage to get almost all A's. The answer is simple. They teach it wrong, so learn it yourself. I have offered alternative methods of presenting material to teachers, etc. only to be ignored because it would be "too much work". So, I just gave up. I sit in the corner, take a few notes, and just soak it in. Others hate it since I just seem to know stuff. But the key is to PAY ATTENTION TO THE WORLD! All of the lessons "taught" in college are all around you. Open your eyes. Open your ears. It just makes sense.
So.. Why do I waste time and money in college? Mostly because of family pressures and "society". But it sure can't hurt in the future. When I go in for a job interview sometime after I graduate, I'll be happy to know that I can get just about any job I want. I have massive experience from working in the industry since I was 14 and then add on that I actually stayed in school. Employers are starting to change their views of degrees, I think. Now it's not so much that you have a CS degree (since we all know almost any idiot can get one these days), it's that you stuck with it long enough to earn the paper. That means a lot--far more than just having one. So if you are thinking about dropping out, give it a good LONG think before you act on it.
Umm... Actually it's just their way of getting noticed even more by the media since "Open Source" and all that are the big buzz words in the tech-news-for-dummies world.
(Translation: They want more exposure that makes the media/people forget that Al Gore is a clueless dumbass.)
No offense, but I hate it when people are judged by age. I'm 19 now and for some reason it seems to make a huge difference in public perception. I look the same, talk the same, etc. But for some reason I am now somehow better being 19 instead of 18.
*sigh*
Sorry, just had to rant. Age discrimination is one of the worst out there. It limits us, forces us to shut up and sit in the corner, and it destroys our minds when we are most able to learn and innovate.
This the one of the best sci-fi films I have seen in ages. I can't say much more than what has already been said here, but if you had any doubts from the commercials, ignore them and head out to the theater to watch! It really is an experience! And the bit about not blinking is totaly true. It was about 2.5 hours and I didn't even notice!! I was very nearly on the edge of my seat the whole time.
I just have one question... Where can I get me one of those red pills?
I found them from an ad on Slashdot about 6 months ago... So I guess banners really do work sometimes. :-)

It was a short circuit. I happened to be watching awhile after they turned it off and the news folks said they had problems with rain and stuff.
They got it working again around 1:30 AM or something like that Paris time.
