The issue I belive is that the Linux kernel has been expanding its capabilities and the init system has not kept pace. Part of that reason is that to take advantage of Linux specific issues means breaking compatibility with other *nix systems.
Take cgroups for example. It is a Linux specific feature, and a great one at that. It can limit CPU, memory, and I/O processes not just just for one process, but for all of the processes that fork off of it. Along the way it solves the "escape by double forking" issue. For systems doing virtualization or running multiple servers it is exactly the kind of thing an admin would want for his services.
Or how about service dependancies? The sysem of A depends on B,F,K works great for all of our package managing systems, and has been for years. The is the reason upstart was adopted, the runlevel system is a very inelegant solution.
I'm not saying systemd is perfect. I really like status messages, but using a binary log file I think is a mistake. But it does provide new features that a lot of developers and admins will be able to take advantage of.

Don't be so quick to count embedded guys out yet. While there isn't much in systemd itself, but as I understand it it will integrate well with kdbus. And kdbus (I think) plans to support QNX style "yield CPU to destination" type message passing. Which is a very nice feature for realtime systems.

If you look at how far things have some in the last 500 years, the amount of stuff provided by the government even in capitalist countries is incredible. Basic literacy was once limited to the elites, disease was rampant. Yet today here in Canada, 1/3 of the population will get a high school diploma, 1/3 a college diploma, and 1/3 a university degree or higher. Healthcare is provided by the government. So what happens when the GDP per Capita continues to grow? In real terms it was $30k in 1994 and stands at $40k in 2011, what will it be like in 2100? What does a country with a $100k GDP per Capita look like?
I don't think that it is unreasonable to think that at some point the level of services provided by the government will be high enough that many people will choose not to work. And instead spending their time on other pursuits. The maginal benefit you gain from going from just government services to a full time job just would be enough for some people. Now obviously not everyone will do this, some poeple will always strive for more. But some people will.
Imagine if you had the choice between $60,000 a year from the government, but $100,000 if you got a full time job. In dollar terms the marginal benefit is $40,000. But at $60,000 you already have enough for the comforts you already enjoy like food, clothes, TV, Internet, vacations, etc. Would you really work 40hrs a week for a little more comfort, or would you take all of that extra time you have been afforded and persure your passion, or spend time with your kids?
Or you could just use an IDE like Vim, Eclipse, NetBeans, etc. that can handle git via plugins. If you are using git enough that you need an interactive shell, you might as well just integrate it with your development enviroment.
The question is: how would society gain anything from that?
There are two arguments being made to support equality in gender ratios. A) A bigger pool of applicants means a higher quality workforce. B) Equality is an end in itself.
Because it seems rather clear that getting women with the right talents to jobs where productivity largely depends on talent and can be quite high with the right people (of which there is a shortage) is a move that helps society.
But surely there are women who have the right talents for these dangerous jobs! Most likely the death rates in these industries would fall if high quality women would replace the lowest quality men. And isn't saving lives a social good?
And as far as the shortage theory goes, some people working on oil rigs or the tar sands make money on par with programmers without having to get an education. There is a huge shortage of labour in the Alberta Tar Sands.
According to the BLS 95% of workplace deaths are men, even though men make up only slightly more than half of the workforce. So how come there is no push to get women in high risk jobs, like oil wells, private security companies, mining, etc?

The problem is getting the machine for mining into place because putting things into orbit is so crazy expensive.

You do realize that there are hundreds of variables involved here right? Every FS in that benchmarks has lots of tweaks that could make things faster/slower. Plus the differences in kernel version, differences in benchmarks versions, hardware differences, etc. You can't be all things to all of the FS. For example turning on compression for btrfs produces huge performance improvements, but that isn't used either.
The test lists all of the gritty details I can think of. They may not be optimal, but it better than handwaving the settings or nothing at all.
If your interested the phoronix_test_suite is FOSS can really easy to run, so if you have some hardware and time, run some benchmarks with a use case you feel is appropriate and let us know how it goes.
Phoronix Benchmarks will give you an idea of the perfomance differences. Btrfs is usually middle of the pack, so nothing to write home about. The big deal with btrfs is the new features like COW, snapshots, filesystem compression, etc. If you are looking for more performance btrfs is not going to impress. If you are looking for better RAID perfomance, snapshots, compression, etc. Then btrfs is going to be huge for linux. It is probably the closest linux will get to having a ZFS clone.

Get a Raspberry Pi and install Fedora or Debian on it so you can have standard OSS software and drivers for USB Webcams, microphones, a USB hard drive, and you might as well through in a cheap GPS unit for good measure. Using standard linux tools/scripts have the system mount the HDD as an encrypted disk with LUKS/encfs/etc. and have the USB+Microphone+GPS stream to the disk using log rotate to ensure there is enough space on the disk every time the system boots up.
Once you have the whole thing working install it into the vehicle so that the Cams/Mic/HDD is in the dash as part of the car. Wire up the Ethernet port to the dash so you can connect to the RaspberryPi via Samba/NFS to get the files if you need them. Then wire-up the system to a little on/off switch.
This way you should be able to record what ever you want securely, and have lots of storage space in case you need to leave it on for a long while or record multiple things. If the cops find out that you are recording them they cannot just take the disk from you since it is built into the car. In order to get at it they would need to impound the car, have someone open the dash, take the drive, and then erase it. All this would be a big hassle and create a paper trail which they would have to justify in court. Since the videos are encrypted they would have to get the password from you, again creating a paper trail to prove that there is video evidence. You can't stop them from destroying the disk once they get their hands on it. But destroying the disk after having someone at the shop remove it would look awfully suspicious, especially since the boot up log on the SD card would show that it mounted correctly.

All this would be a big hassle and create a paper trail which they would have to justify in court. Since the videos are encrypted they would have to get the password from you, again creating a paper trail to prove that there is video evidence. You can't stop them from destroying the disk once they get their hands on it. But destroying the disk after having someone at the shop remove it would look awfully suspicious, especially since the boot up log on the SD card would show that it mounted correctly.
This article is absolute garbage. Almost everything in that Guardian article is misinformed and sensationalist.
"fully autonomous war machines"? Care to give an example? I've follow this stuff pretty closely in the news on top of researching AI myself. And from what I have seen no one is working on this. Hell, we've only just started to crack autonomous vehicles. They site X-37 space plane for gods' sake. Everything about that is classified so how do they know it is autonomous?
My favourite gem has to be this one: "No one on your side might get killed, but what effect will you be having on the other side, not just in lives but in attitudes and anger?". Pretty sure that keeping your side alive while attacking your opponent has been the point of every weapon that has ever been developed.
People should be able to sue the DA for frivolous charges. Between this guy and Aaron Schwartz it is pretty clear that the DA/cops have so issue with just making up bullshit charges to harass and scare people. I would even go so far as to call it extortion in some cases. There should be consequences for doing this.
I remember reading this article a while back showing how congress was forcing the military to buy equipment they didn't even want.
Lets get real here. The military could cut a ton of funds and it would have zero effect on readiness. If the military actually had control of some of these decisions instead of stupid politicians. There is a ton of equipment that the military would skip buying, or buy cheaper versions if the government would stop running the DoD as a corporate welfare program. There are lots of bases that can and should be closed and consolidated, but can't for political reasons.
The problem is not that the military is going to lose funding, it that the pork that congress pushes through the DoD in the name of national defence will go under the chopping block.
