  9. Replies on the hole on Building Your Own Hobbit Hole · · Score: 4, Interesting

    Hi all!
First I wanted to thank whoever posted this to /. I have gotten a lot of good feedback and ideas on how to make the structure better.

But allow me to make a few observations and corrections.

There are eight fire exits and they are listed on the site.

Six rooms, the ones most used, have direct sunlight. You may not be able to see the windows in the pictures, but you have windows in the master bath, master bedroom, living room, foyer, kitchen and dining room. Plus you have skylights in the zen room and the study.

The space under the floors is at least 18 inches deep which can leave you up to 9 feet of headroom. I think that is enough. The curved walls can also be used to build closets and trunks without taking up floor space or clog the halls.

I have some concerns with other building methods because of the crushing weight of soil that would need to be dumped on the structure. The plan would not be to excavate, but to find a somewaht flat ground, lay the pipe, apply several layers of moisture barrier and then cover with many feet of soil and landscape. Rain itself would add several TONS of roof loading in a matter of minutes. Also, the point of this is to have a LOW amount of labor-hours. Most rammed earth structures takes years of spare time to build.

The use of pipe means you can configure the dwelling anyway you want; ringed, linear or multilevel. for example, if you build it as a ringed structure, you can have an open-air garden in the middle with all rooms being open to it. My example is just ONE example.

My goal for this site was to simply come up with yet ANOTHER idea for home construction that is not based on the traditional house. Who knows if anyone ever builds it? As I said on the site, I am just "expressing my inner architect."

The ad had a head shot of a guy sitting at his computer (a Mac... all 128k) with this thing like Rio headphones on his head. He was wearing glasses and his tie was positioned like it was being windblown over his shoulder. And he looked dorky.

It is possible that the technology has progressed so that this type of contraption is useful, but tracking head movements are a bad way to input x:y data. Tracking eye movements is a much better idea.

When typing this comment, I moved my head hardly any, but my eyes were all over the place.

  12. Quicktime, Real and platform usability on Live Streaming Video? · · Score: 1

Greetings, I do a ton of work with streaming media and found Quicktime Streaming Server to be THE best option. As noted before, the pricing for Real is simply outrageous so that is not an option. However, Quicktime streams are now payable with the latest version of Real Player. So that solves the Linux box issue. Windows Media streaming platform is a nightmare set-up and you cut Mac and Linux folks out of the loop. For us, we want to have the widest audience possible without dumping tons of cash towards a server license. Quicktime Streaming Server is the best choice for us. The only catch is, you need to an Apple G4 to run the app. I am unsure if it has been ported over to another platform yet. Stormy

I did some price comparisons between the 733 MHz G4 and a similarly spec'd system on Dell.com. (I did take inot account flops as opposed to clock cycles) If you include the gigabit network card, the Firewire ports, and all the other features that comes standard with the Apple product, the Dell system comes out $200 more. Also, this does NOT include a DVD-R drive nor the authoring software that is included as standard issue with the G4. If you are just looking for a system to email and surf with, the G4 is a bit too hardware for that. Stormasaurus Rex
