Yeah well not that I didn't see this coming but still, the only change I see from Obama and it's negative, not that I would have voted for McCain but still, bleh!
So I agree with the others saying that only private sector can get anything done in space from here on out, the US is done as far as the Gov/NASA is concerned...
Sending convicts or even lay persons of a non scientific background would make no sense. Until the day when there is a thriving system able to provide food, water and oxygen for large masses of people, not to mention structures to house them; the only people who should be sent to Mars should and will be those who have beneficial scientific, medical or technical knowledge. Preferably individuals versed in multiple disciplines as with a limited number of individuals, millions of miles from "backup" you wouldn't want to be without a doctor or an engineer if someone were to be injured or killed.
Don't get me wrong, sign me up the day true colonization is possible and lay people are needed there. For now that simply wouldn't be the case, what would we do other than use resources we wouldn't be helping to generate.
I agree, we really should worry about our own country first and foremost. In the past the US was seen as the land of milk and honey, a place to flee to where life would be better. Maybe if we get our own act straightened up it can be that way again, and people who suffer from this kind of oppression will have a safe place to go.
Most of the middle east really is to far gone to be bothered with in my opinion. Let them battle amongst themselves, it's what they want. Let them have it.
Personally I wouldn't give NASA a dime, they're antiquated and as a government agency they are so mired in red tape that they can't accomplish anything.
Gone are the days of get it done and damn the consequences. Now it's every life is precious, if there's any potential for an accident no matter how remote then all stop and inspect for a week, a month or longer...
Private industry will is going to provide most of the technology that will make space travel commonplace and much much cheaper. Companies like Scaled Composites (Spaceship One and Two) and a number of others are already well on the way to making commercial spaceflight available.
And other companies are taking similar strides with everything from space elevators, moon landers, etc...
So if anyone is going to get my money...it's private industry all the way!

I have 3 accounts setup with Exchange Push on my iPhone and they all work fine. Two gmail accounts and my work email from our Exchange server.
