  4. benefits of a dust storm on Mars Rover "Spirit" In Danger · · Score: 1

Well I for one hope the rovers survive, Cornell would certainly be sad if either of them dies. As for the dust storms, there have been previous dust storms which have actually cleared off the solar panels which then allowed the rovers to produce more power. So if Spirit survives, it might be better for it.

Thats cool, last winter I spent some time making his wii systems for myself. I was certainly cool. i also did a couple modifications. This technology certainly has a lot of potential to make it so everyone with a wii can have a VR system. What was it that the carnegie mellon professor made, a $500 VR system? Well its now like $300.

  6. Re:This is disappointing-More Disappointing on Nvidia Problems Hit HP Desktops · · Score: 1

but as long as you are not switching rapidly this shouldnt hurt the lifetime of the card as much. The main issue is the powerup/down of laptops and desktops. If they are left on for the most part they should be alright.

  7. This is disappointing on Nvidia Problems Hit HP Desktops · · Score: 1

Well this NVIDIA issue has been out for a while and its a major disappointment especially since I bought a 9600gt like 2 months ago which will suffer the same fate. However, this issue is agravated by temperature changes in the graphics card. So this is agravated in laptops which are cycled on and off frequently. Seeing as I leave my desktop on most of the time and that I use the graphics card for long sessions but also do not have heavy, frequent loads I expect this to be a non-issue with my setup. I got the card to do CUDA while waiting for the next generation of NVIDIA cards to come out.

So yeah, this should not be a huge issue if you are not temperature cycling the card like mad. Its much more important on a laptop for that reason.

  8. DPS 2008 on Mysteries Swirl Around Cyclones At Saturn's Poles · · Score: 1

Well I am volunteering at DPS 2008 at Cornell University this weekend and it certainly has been awesome. I am not aware of a discussion of this topic (sounds like this is something new anyway). I know that Neptune's dark spots do have methane clouds that form around it because of condensation from air moving upwards rapidly. I wonder if these cyclones have anything to do with the hex nut at the north pole of saturn.

  9. Sounds bad but its probably worse on NSA Whistleblowers Reveal Extent of Eavesdropping · · Score: 3, Interesting

  10. Its easier now on No IPv6 For UK Broadband Users · · Score: 1

i would think that some sort of mandate would be put out forcing any new networks that are put down to be IPv6. I mean its not like we do not see this coming. Maybe people have the mentality of Moore's law that electronic will be cheaper in the future so we might as well keep putting it off. But heck, those IPv4 networks will just upgrade themselves.

  11. At least its partially scientifically accurate on Qantas Blames Wireless For Aircraft Incidents · · Score: 1

Makes me think of Superman Returns where Loise is thrown all around the cabin and yet she walks out perfectly aright without so much as a bruise. As for whether interference could cause those problems - i would expect that all important components would be shielded and the control system of the plane to be not wirelessly dependent. If interference was actually the cause it makes me think that some sort of system should be put in and turned on for normal flying which would override "commands" that would create such a severe acceleration. Of couse that would be pilot overrideable for landing as such, but it would prevent some sort of accidental stray signal from causing everyone to fly out of their seat.

  13. Thank God on MS Reportedly Adds 6 Months of Vista Downgrade · · Score: 2, Insightful

I still do not see why they are cutting off XP. If their Vista is so good than it would speak for itself and people would switch to it. Perhaps once computers have enough power to waste a few extra cycles on vista's ineffiencies it will catch on. i guess i have a problem with microsoft trying to bully people into using their newest software. If they used that time constructively I am sure they could come up with much improved products.

  14. Deserves Apple Right on Looming Royalty Decision Threatens iTunes Store, Apple Hints · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Apple already takes too much of the pie. I mean if such a small portion goes to the artist then you would think they would be able to do it so much cheaper especially considering the volume of their sales. Even moreso, I don't see why the RIAA would go after people who download music when Apple doesn't give artists much money anyway. Maybe this is exactly what Apple needs to find out - people dont love them.

  15. GPGPU on NASA Upgrades Weather Research Supercomputer · · Score: 3, Interesting

Seeing as 67 teraflops is going to be the new processing power for this machine, I wonder if a NVIDIA CUDA implementation has been considered. Their Tesla systems are designed for this High Performance Computing, offer a significant amount of processing power and are relatively easy to parallelize code for. I know that oil companies use these high powered systems to find locations of oil, but I guess that its less likely for weather forcasting since there is less money in it. However, it would be interesting to see these cards used for modelling hurricanes and determine their expected strength and path of travel more accurately.
