A VM is your answer. If not, then dual boot. In the worst case, buy two computers. If all you are short of is videoconferencing software, try Google Voice. I've heard the linux version works well. I Skype my folks from linux...It works well for that because I'm using only 2-way video and voice. You can't video conference with more than two and there are other issues as well, compliments of Microsoft, who has not updated the linux software in a long time.

They could even block the competing services altogether.

  11. age on Ask Slashdot: How Have You Handled Illegal Interview Topics? · · Score: 1

I remember a phone screen I had 5 months ago for a software developer position at a mobile app co. The whole time, the recruiter listened in on the conversation. One of the interviewers was the software architect and he kept grilling me about my age. First, he flat-out asked me what my age was. I hesitated but told him. Thereafter, he continuously mentioned he was expecting to interview and hire someone in their 20's. He then asked me why I thought he should hire me instead of someone in their twenties. I felt like mentioning that what he was doing is age discrimination. Afterwards, I sent the recruiter an email raising the subject about the architect but the recruiter never replied, nor could I reach him by phone again. A week later, I mentioned the entire experience to a retired lawyer who is supposedly a friend to my folks. The lawyer said its only age discrimination if you are over 50 (which I am not)...What a crock! I ended up not sueing, as it's probably not worth the effort. Discrimination by potential employers is alive and well in the United States.

Then their are conservatives with the ignorant, biased view that scientists are all a bunch liberal elites who think they are better than everyone else because they have PhDs and grad degrees.

  25. My 2 cents on Why Linux Can't 'Sell' On the Desktop · · Score: 1

There are certain demographics for users of Linux on the desktop. If you have to ask the question "Why would anyone want to use Linux as their everyday desktop (or laptop) operating system?", then you are probably not part of those demographics. Most desktop linux users are academics, hobbyists and people who are just motivated to tinker and learn about computers and operating systems. I imagine there is also a smaller portion of people who use linux purely out of financial concern (its free, as in beer). Anyway, I'm quite happy with the level of desktop penetration linux has now. Its enough that there is a worldwide community of support and plenty of competing projects to some of the best commercial software available (ex: LibreOffice). I don't think linux needs the hype (or reputation) that Microsoft Windows or IOS has.
