Is it worth all that for OS X on these machines?

For the money you could buy a recent imac to run OS X on and put the 604 machines to other jobs. Of course money isn't everything and there is a satisfaction in a good hacking.

I now have a new G4, rev D iMAC and an 8600/300 at home for testing on a semi-permanent basis. I think they want to dump the 8600's so the one could be permanent and get a couple more.

We use VLANs to segment the network into student, admin, etc. You can install whatever you like on the student network(labs, etc.) but your hard drive will be reimaged if you blow it up too bad. You can install Linux, XP, OS/2, etc. but IT doesn't support it and you are on your own. The admin network is a little more strict. There is a standard OS, apps, etc. and trying to deviate from this is strongly discouraged.
