When I got to college the first programming class I took was Basic and they were using QBASIC(no line numbers, YEAAA). I was ready for line number nightmares but was pleasantly surprised. The instructor also taught so C classes to everything he did was structure and subroutines. It so natural going from that class to the intro C class.

The new mainframes are up to 32 CPU's dynamically able to reallocate CPU's to either environment. This all sounds pretty cool but it is NT. The upside is that the mainframe programs do communicate with NT servers and if you do it internally it is much faster.

I have had some experience with IBM AS/400's and I know that they are rock solid and I hear the same things about the S/390's. I don't know why you wouldn't run a VM Linux session to at least check it out. There are a lot scarier things out there than Linux on mainframes!!

You can't compare Mhz straight across either but I'm sure I buy all the claims. Salary is only part of what an employer pays so factory built machines are closer to the cost of custom built machines than you realize when you look at the bottom line(which most administration do). I built a system for a friend with a Geforce (win98) and tried it out in my system.
