Better how? If you mean better because it makes smaller files then I guess it could be considered better. If you mean better image quality then I find that hard to believe considering image quality is the main concern of MJEPG over MPEG2. MJPEG does eat a hard drive like crazy but image quality is top notch. My brother does some promotional videos for stores and uses a Matrox Marvel G200 for the capture. It works good but he has outgrown it and wants to go digital. He is considering a Matrox RT2000 which is a professional grade setup with a G400 integrated to the package.
Gamespot stated that it would use either Nvidia's NV11 or NV15. They are projected at 1.5x and 3x a current GeForce in performance. I suppose it would make a difference on Nvidia's time schedule on which one they would use.
Gamespot's coverage states that it will not use Win98 or WinCE for an OS. It will probably be using a custom written OS(still from MS). I have to agree that the consumer versions of Windows isn't going to win on ulitmate reliability tests but...
Check out Quantum 3d's website for some heavy duty 3d using a "ruggedized" version of Win95 for arcade systems and high end simulations. They have sub- systems ($40,000 for the 32 CPU version) that can use up to 32 of the new VSA-100 chipsets (Voodoo 4/5) and it just rocks. I have flown a 35 million dollar Beoing 777 simulator (my brother's landlord is night security and has access) and there is very little difference in speed and quality between the two. The flight simulator does have adavantages in all the other areas of course. I haven't spent enough time with the Quantum 3d to see it crash but I have seen every other OS crash at least once including consoles. The real question is if they can build it as solid as other consoles. I believe they can IF they don't try to make it do more than it should.
I know CNet says Intel but that was even before the press release. According to the press release it will be an Athlon 650 and either Nvidia's NV11 or NV15 chipset. Check Gamespot's article for some details and screenshots from some game and a couple videos. I'm not sure how far a 650 will go next fall considering I'm looking at higher right now.
but the price is more than the dicussion here would bear. I built an animation workstation for my brother-in-law. We went with the Oxygen RPM card and it is a great card but it cost $1250.00 at the time. Alias/Wavefront's Maya works like a dream on this card and so does Lightwave but you can't go below 24bit color. The majority of people here are more interested in the ultimate gaming card and would be better off with a Voodoo5 6000 (very soon)for $600.00 if they want to kick some butt.
A side note: If you saw the simulations for Robbie Kinevil's train and Grand Canyon jumps then you saw my brother-in-law's work using this system.
(I know I will get moderated into the ground but who really cares about karma) Why don't you get your head out of your butts? The article has a hosed link and several helpful people type up fixes at the same time. The time stamps are all within a minute or two which means they were all typing up their responses at the same time or they forgot to hit their reload button in the last 30 seconds.
You have morerate them all down and redundant?? That's the spirit. Let's go moderate the flooders. I really don't care if I read about grits, or trolls or Natalie ocassionally but I can do without a dozen Naked Jackie Chan's in a row. You must really be wound up tight.
This is supposed to be a place to discuss topics and generally enjoy what we do. Grow up!! Just ignore it if someone cuts up and gets a little sideways. Your moderation is what keeps the blatant ones going trying to see how far they can go. I finally figured that one out. No more posting replies to Don Knotts for me (Bye Frank).
I was going to post anonomously but decided unsigned letters don't carry much weight. What was I going to do with that karma anyway?
/End rant Optical switches are a great idea. I know that media converters have the source of way too many problems where I worked at. The fiber connections were nice but the problems came when making transitions between medias.
Ok. Know that we have the course outlined, what supplies are we going to need for class?
How much will the academic versions of games cost at the bookstore?
How much of the course will include artistic classes so we have decent content (characters, textures, etc.) after we have coded everything? Great AI will not be that impressive if the game looks like it was drawn by a 4th grader.
Are any of the game manufactures going to supply some game code? I know we have Quake I,Descent code, etc. but I mean they could turn over some abandon projects over to the schools. Sierra just killed a project that was almost finished here recently. They could give it to the school with the provision that they would get the final product back to distrubute. Of course it would probably be on the school's FTP tool but whatever money they make would be gravy and offset costs they incured up to the point they abandoned the project.
How much can I write off on my taxes to educational expenses? I have a pretty good amount racked up on games and hardware and research into multiple platforms. I could have a really nice return next year.
The documentation DOES say that if you modify this equipment you can lose your authority to operate this equipment.
I don't think that this could be enforced but I could be wrong. It seems that copyrights have been held in force because they haven't been challenged. Reverse engineering was a big win serveral years ago but current trends in courts are to take rights away as fast as possible. The courts haven't even bothered to to hear the facts but rather listen to the big corps(they must be right because they wouldn't have gotten so big).
Case in point: Etoys vs Etoy. The judge shut the etoy website down without even waiting for a verdict even though etoy pre-existed etoys by a couple of years. Enough ranting.
Does anyone know if this also works on the the Ultra33 controllers? I have a couple that I got for a project but didn't end up using them. How about raid for $10.00(what I paid).
What do I do with this $800-$1000 if I already have a good 3d card? I could buy a Gigahertz CPU but would probably start building another Athlon with my money. I am still looking at the 800 so I guess you can't call me a serious hardcore gamer.
Right now I need more speed on my internet connection. I'm using both phone lines @44k each (real world) trying to frag all you Slashdotters out there. We don't have cable or xDSL here. I do have an ISP that wants to experiment with wireless but still want over $1000.00 to get it started. I guess this is what I would do with the money. More power to all of you who already have fast connections and can get 1Ghz CPU. I will be joining you as soon as I can.
I suppose you wonder why you get fragged so much these morons using USB mice. A USB mouse is way smoother than a good ole PS/2 mouse. I hear people whine about cheating because no human can aim that fast without cheating. If you can't hold your own then you need to get better and/or get better equipment or deal with it.
ZDNet stated that the Williamette CPU was specially cooled. They also stated that it only hit 1.5Ghz once while being demoed. The other times it hit 1.4??. Athlons were running at 1.1 Ghz last week air-cooled and stable. I think that Intel is huffing and puffing trying to keep up. They need to do some serious rethinking on designs. They take way too long coming down the pipe. Rambus isn't the way to go and neither is Williamette. McKinley looks more promising but we will have to wait and see.
I've heard rumors that this new box will be AMD powered but that could change. Cyrix is owned by Via and producing a celeron compatible called Joshua. It's specs are between a celeron and PIII with 3DNow!.
a cluster of these. Kidding. This article almost seems like flamebait on/. What else would you expect from an article promoting a Redmond product? I think 64mb is minimum right now, so in 2001 it seems like it will be a little on the short side. Will I want a 56k modem next year. Can I put in that new 50Gb hd that will have been out for awhile by that time?
I will stick with my athlon system for a while longer and just keep my eyes on the PS2.
I wonder how many of the people that are taking credit would continue to do so if they were prosecuted. If I went into the local police station and confessed to a murder, arsen, etc. then I would be in cuffs so fast it would make your spin as fast as a 10,000 rpm hd.
Perhaps the just GUI part of it is messed. I agree that the graphical G2 is a resource hog. PPC Linux has been trying to get G2 for awhile now these guys come out of nowhere and Realnetworks custom builds it? I guess it is a matter of catching the right person at the right time.
Their contest says they will give away 10 of them at an approximate total value of $3000.00. So it would seem that $300.00 is what they are hoping for.
If you inserted Linux everywhere you said Mac then your statement would have gotten you bombed into the stone age. There is nothing wrong with wanting to play games on your favorite system. If enough people want the same thing and the developer figures it out then you will see it.
Go back to playing on your Win box. Someday it could be possible that it will be in the minority and you will be waiting monthes to play games that everyone else on Linux/BeOS/Mac/etc. are done and on to the next generation of games. I play on Windows but I also play on Linux as much as possible. Unreal Tournament is playing fine in Linux on my Athlon.
Was the question I was asked about an hour and a half ago by a co-worker. They found a good deal on the HP Athlon systems. I told them that I loved mine and would heartily recomend it.
I have several of both companies chips and love to see the competition driving prices down. I'm waiting to see what happens with VIA's Joshua CPU before I upgrade my Pentium II 233Mhz. It's an 66mhz mb that will go up to 533Mhz. Celeron, Joshua, whatever.
That isn't quite what I meant. I was saying that Microsoft could take Win9x/2000 and replace the core with BSD under the hood. If they could make it run most *nix and all Win32 programs AND be as stable then it could be a threat. I'm not saying that BSD would disappear. OpenBSD will continue to run on my NAT/firewall box at home. What I'm trying to say is that they would grab the existing code and use it.

You are correct. I apologize. Does anyone know the operating temp on the Willamette?
You are right. My bad.
They are expected to be slightly cheaper according to press releases.
