If you want examples of legitimate uses for P2P point to the hundered of thousands of FTP sites that provide terabytes of information everyday. For that matter you could argue the Web is P2P, the basic idea behind it is one person sets up a web page in order to provide another person or persons access that information remotly. Whether it is Slashdot, which provides user entered commentary on issues of the day or NVIDIA who uses it to provide product information, technical support and driver downloads.

If P2P has no legitmate uses, then why is a groupware package considered neccessary for any business employing more that 2 people ? If they want to outlaw P2P, then MS Exchange and Outlook should be the first programs banned, because as far as I can tell its only use is to distribute VB script worms.

There are several decent programs for capturing from the card, goto freshmeat and do a search. I prefer RealProducer Basic because I don't have to worry about Video and Audio sync, which I found was a problem with some others and fairly small file sizes. Setting up a cron job to do the recording at the proper time is easy as well. What this is missing is the TiVo's ability to download current TV listing and adjust recording times when neccessary. This could probably be done with a perl script which downloads the schedule from TVGuide.com, then searches for the programs you specify and/or present you with a menu of options, then update the cron job accordingly. Depending on the information TVGuide.com has you may even be able to look for a paticular actor or director.

Isolation has its disadvantages as well, the police/fire/rescue people would have as much difficulty getting there as anyone and not to mention replacement parts. Since there is only one pipeline, it is easy to cut. Alaska is still inside the United States and is therefore still subject to U.S. law and Alaska State law. I really see no advantage to building there as opposed to some other less isolated area such as Montana where there might be a road and a small town nearby. Heck I hear Area 51 is vacant now.

I can also use a TV tuner card to convert my video tapes to realvideo and watch them on my laptop. All this is very legal under Fair Use and are by no means a bad thing. The media companies want to deny me the ability to do any of these things with DvD's and this is a bad thing. The media companies and upto this point, the courts, are assuming the only purpose of programs like DeCSS is to pirate DvD movies. The reality is, there are no known cases of DeCSS having been used to pirate any movie, so the correct assumption should be that legal users are using it for Fair Use purposes. DvD Pirates are going to make copies no matter what, so the only people who are being penalized is legal users. This was very likely thier intent to begin with.

I beleive the protests of the 60's were very effective, do you really beleive Nixon would have pulled out of Vietnam had there not been rioting in the streets ? and Kent State was in vain ? or Martin Luthor King accomplished nothing ?.

In recent times protests have not been effective, because the government has gotten better at dealing with them. They learned from the invasion of Grenada and later Panama that to control the flow of information to the media is a very effective way to control public opinion. We saw a glimer of how effective this can be during the WTO protests in Seattle, the news media was completely oblivious to the fact that the police were using rubber bullets and tear gas on protestors until it was reported through alternative means, such as the Internet.

As a side note, I think it is ineresting that protests against the status quo, such as the ones in Seattle, are meant with brutle force, while those supporting the status quo, ie both the supporters of Bush and Gore (yes, they both represent the status quo) in Florida during our month long Presidential election are pretty much left alone.

Frankly I don't see the next generation of games requiring much more than a Celeron 500. Right now only a handful require anything more than a 233, even if they double or triple that requirement, an 800 Mhz processor you buy today will do nicely. If benchmarks are to be trusted, the answer is no, I wouldn't see much of a performance gain. This is especially true when you consider we must seperate benchmark differences and precievable differences. Meaning, just because the Pentium IV or even an Athlon scores higher on any given benchmark, does not neccessarliy mean I will notice any difference in my day to day usage. I will go out on a limb here and say most people, even power users, would be hard put to tell the difference between a 1.5 G Pentium, a 1.3 G Athlon and a 1 G Pentium III or for that matter a Duron 850, when using the systems for basic tasks, such as web browsing, email, word processing etc. Even when considering 3D gaming, the Video card has a bigger impact on the FPS then the processor.

In this is day and age most programs run well on a 233 or less, the most processor intense thing we do is watch DvD's ripped to DiVX and this can be done on 350 or 400. My point is don't bother with any of the high end stuff, very likely anything faster than 600 M processor on a 100 M bus will be fine for the forseeable future. Spend your money instead on a large fast hard drive, a good Video Card, decent sound card/speakers and tons of memory. Most of the extremely small desktop PC systems use integrated sound and video, which are also crappy when compared to a Soundblaster Live and a GeForce II. So why shouldn't he buy himself some flexibilty. You can't play solitaire on an airplane with a full tower system.

I have to agree here, this is what portable computers were made for. I am not sure why you object to carrying around a laptop as opposed to micro desktop PC. In the configuration you are looking at, the bulkiest part is going to be the monitor anyway. Buying a small integrated system like the BookPC is going to have all the same problems as a portable and weigh 3 times as much. The ATI Mobile Rage isn't a great chipset, but it kicks butt on the 810 chipset and the new Nvidia chipset promises to be better. The portable can also be used in many places a BookPC type system can not, like an airplane. Buy a laptop and get a decent external monitor, keyboard, mouse, joystick and some speakers (all of which you will need anyway), all your problems will be solved. The only set back is price, even a low end laptop costs a lot more than a BookPC.
