  1. Re:That's not the professional term on Justice Department Seeks Ebonics Experts · · Score: 1

    Like double negatives, split infinitives, or dangling prepositions?

    Here, I must disagree.

    There is certainly a logical reason for the prohibition of double negatives.

    Take the following sentence. "I am tall."
    Let's express that this way... I_am(tall) == true;

    If we negate this "I am not tall.";
    We get I_am(!tall) == true;

    When we add a double negative to the situation "I ain't not tall."
    We get !I_am(!tall) == true;
    Which is the exact opposite of the intent of the speaker of the line.

    "I ain't not tall." actually has the same meaning as "I am tall." but in the mind of the speaker, "I am not tall" and "I ain't not tall." have the same meaning.
    Logically we have I_am(!tall) == !I_am(!tall) == true; which is completely nonsensical.

    The entire point of language is to give us the ability to share our thoughts with one another. Without rules (even arbitrary or sometimes capricious ones), it is no longer possible to do that.

    I have a greater than 2:1 gun to person ratio in my house.

    Pictures are OK. Video is OK. There is just no substitute for making new memories with someone.

    Sad as it may be, even if she weren't ill, one day she would die. One day you will die. One day I will die. Nothing we can do will change that, but we can spend time with the people we love and who love us and make as many good memories as we can. You don't want all of your children's memories to be about preparing for mommy's death. Give your children the chance to keep their mother alive in their memories. Good memories. You'd be better off just making the car completely burn the fuel in the first place.

    There are problems with that. To get the most efficient combustion, you want the highest practical compression and temperature. The problem with that is you create more nitrogen oxides when you increase the production temperature. Why's that important? Because it will mix with other atmospheric pollutants and become smog.

    The other option is to do something that GM used to do back in the 80s, they pumped fresh air into the exhaust manifold to allow unburnt hydrocarbons to burn up before and in the catalytic converter. Better emissions, no additional smog, but low gas mileage. We always have to make a tradeoff.
