  1. Re:Oh. on Texas County Will Use Twitter To Publish Drunk Drivers' Names · · Score: 1

In a community of six million people, how many people do you think share the same name? I can just imagine someone in my community reading my name on this Twitter page and thinking it was me rather than one of the three other people I know about with the same name. What a mess.

I live in the Greater Pittsburgh area. There are much fewer than 6 million people here. Other than my father, there is at least one other person who shares my exact same first and last names. This guy is, unfortunately, a piss-poor criminal. He has been arrested for numerous petty crimes over the course of the past 16 or so years. He lives less than 5 miles from me. He's also exactly 10 years older than me, so when he get arrested for something it looks like it was me, but there was a typo in regards to the age. The last time he was in the paper, he was 41 and I was 31. He was living in a municipality that bordered the one that I lived in.

As bad as all of that is, I still think it's a bad idea to publish people's names who have just been charged. They should only be able to put you up before public scrutiny when you've been convicted. This has too much potential for abuse.

  2. Re:Boom. on "Home Batteries" Power Houses For a Week · · Score: 1

I have experience in heavy industry. They buy a lot of power. They are in may ways the bread and butter of a power company. The world is a bit different now, but in this part of the US, electric utilities were once run to an area because there was heavy industry there that would be buying the power. Communities were build up around the industry and those people had electricity, sewage, running water, etc. because it was all provided nearby for the industrial user. Now, power is run to every inhabited place, but heavy industry still buys a lot of power. They have contractual agreements with utilities. They have a maximum power allotment for the contractually determined period of time, let's just work with months in this case, if they go over that allotment they have to pay a much higher rate for all of the power they bought during the month. It can sometimes double the electric bill. You think a $150 monthly power bill is bad? What if you're using $200k worth of electricity in a month? There are computer systems dedicated to continuous computation of how much it costs to operate for an hour, how much money is being generated by operating that hour, how much power is being used, the number of dollars per kwh, commodity prices, how much it would cost to locally generate power and myriad other variables. At some points it's a better business decision to shut down operations, at other points it's better to keep operating and pay the higher electric rate and lastly there are situations where it's most profitable to operate but generate electricity locally using another resource, like natural gas.

I highly doubt that the utility companies will provide home users with the most beneficial data for power management. If you want to save money, you'll have to have your own system.

If they diagnosed a three year old child as bipolar, I can just about guarantee you that it was patently obvious to anyone that the kid had some kind of problem. I don't work in that field, but I have friends and loved ones who have had to deal with mental illness. I suppose that it's possible that this kid just happened to run into a quack, but it's more likely that he was violent with others and possibly even himself. Lawsuit potential is so high if they misdiagnose a child that young, that I'd be willing to bet that the doctor that prescribed this medication consulted many other doctors first.

I agree. Several years ago I saw a child who had some emotional problems come around relatively quickly with psychotropic drugs. Pumping an 11 year old full of these medications isn't the best solution but this kid was going to end up hurting someone or himself and his mother didn't have the money for the best therapists. It took about a year to get the combination of medicines and counseling right but it caused an amazing turn around in this little boy.

If they weren't so quick to medicate poor children, we'd be asking why so many poor kids are going without adequate treatment for mental illness.

I kind of agree with this, but at the same time if you are looking to leave your job because of an assholeish decision on the part of management, some other party is in charge of your actions too. I'm currently seeking new employment because the owner where I work is all about doing it her way without any consideration of how it affects the little people that work for her.
