If it is being processed on an external device it is likely that the camera will not be in the eye (at least at first), and it appears that any camera is supported which leads to some interesting possibilities (streaming TV or the internet direct to your optic nerve anyone?) and also some interesting hacking opportunities. To bad that installing something like this would require you to lose an eye however it could lead the way to space opera style cyborgs.

I assume that 98 electrodes means a resolution similar to 98 pixels so it sadly wouldn't provide a very good replacement, however this will probably improve in time as historically eye problems have attracted strong support and funding. It would also not work very well for people with damaged optic nerves and would probably require the removal of a natural eye if the patient has one.

I've always found the nouveau drivers to provide terrible graphics/screen resolutions and very little in terms of config options. I will give you that they require less setup, but that is usually just because they are default. KMS would be very useful in the official drivers but, good graphics quality is more important.

I installed it, but when you enable another monitor or change from "seprate x-screens" to "xcinerama" or change the screen positions nothing changes until a reboot (or an x restart) because it just change the config file.
Maybe SUSE has a newer version or something, all the distros I use are debian based.

Perhaps you set it up wrong (you have to reboot/restart x to change most settings related to multiple monitors). I have managed to get multiple monitors working in both separate x-screen and xcinerama (which is similar to how windows does dual screens) setups on multiple different machines. One thing that doesn't work very well with multiple monitors is gnome 3/unity/cinnamon but that's not due to the drivers, its due to the gnome 3 devs deciding no one needs multiple monitors.
KDE, MATE and gnome 2 all work fine on multiple monitors using the nvidia drivers it takes about 30 seconds plus a reboot to set it up. The only problems i've had with the official drivers is how ubuntu tries to remove them when you upgrade to a new release.

Don't confuse needless complexity with complexity. I'd wager you'd be hard pressed to find a doc LibreOffice can't open that Office 2003/2007/2010 created

I would note that 90% of the time LibreOffice can open odt documents saved in office correctly though.

Iterestingly ODT suport in word seems to have gone backwards, in 2007 they mostly open fine but in 2010 any document created in LibreOffice is treated as corupt (literally any, it could be blank). Although once it "repairs" it, it renders complety fine.
Saddly it will be a while before we get rid of docx, not because libreoffice writer isn't ready (with odt documents it is) but because docx is the standard format for the majority and whilst the alternatives can't support it, it is basicly imposible to transition. (Rember in buisness people will be reciving documents from other companies, government organisations, home computers, etc)

On the point of drivers with the exception of cannon network printers (which are completly unsuported) and nvidia drivers when installing updates (the drivers work fine, they just get unistall/misconfigured by upgrades very easily) I fine linux to be supperior to windows in driver support, because it dosen't speed 30mins searching and installing a flash drive driver (they just work) and you don't have to trawl the web for a wireless card driver (Something I had to do in Win 7 for a certain netgear N wirless dongle but not in ubuntu where it worked out of the box).
