I actually installed(setup) NetBSD on a Cyrix 166 in 15 minutes. No X, just dhcp, Apache and some other minor servers. The longest part was the Apache compile!
I remember, back in 1991 when I was still green in UNIX, I asked somebody on a NG for help with a problem. It was a perl script. He had emailed it to me, and I ran it w/o looking at it. It proceeded to delete my entire home directory (was it/export/home back then? I forget). Everyone needs to do something REALLY stupid like that before they'll learn. That was a valuable lesson to me.
I read about this trojan on Linuxtoday 2 days ago..there are only 21 known cases of it. And it's ONLY possible under root. They don't even explain how a person can get it...plus the article is FROM symantec! Ever think they may have created it, along with the other 1,000 viruses? A good way for them to sell more av software. Symantec probably hates Linux more than MS does.
I'm sort of confused. I know that UNIX people apply to UNIX shops won't necessarily create more UNIX jobs, but it won't make them less popular either. There are already WAY too many people in the field(90% of them being from India). Sort of like MCSE's a couple of years ago.The only way to create more UNIX jobs is for companies to have more UNIX systems. Evangelists in the work force alone won't do it.
However, I've been working with the UNICES for more than 12 years. I don't even APPLY to something w/ Microsoft technology. Why not? Because I specialize in UNIX and Linux technologies. I don't even come across MS technologies in most of the jobs I've had. So, it's not that my post was an anti-MS rant. It's like you saying you won't apply to a job for VB coding if you're a die hard C programer. Make sense?
I hate when people bring that up. The security holes listed for linux is for EVERY distubution. If Redhat has a problem with imlib, every distro may have a probelm with it. SO if SUSE, Caldera and Mandrake have an imlib problem now, that's 4 listings! And a good 90% of the security problems are minor. (Alot of the MS ones are minor too.) Should we count a Eudora vulnerability as a MS vulnerability???? NO, but a third party app on Linux is counted, why is that?
During the Roman Empire, Caesar used the term "Bread and Circus". Give them food and sports/entertainment and they won't care what's going on around them" In otherwords, placate the people, keep them dumb, and they become oblivious to the problems around them. This is true in EVERYTHING. I refuse to allow anyone to get that control over me.Another reason why people ridicule everything I do..When they see the things I do, or how I do things, it causes them to question their OWN motives, which ultimately forces them to look at their own actions, which the first response is usually anger. This is understandable, and I don't force my views upon anyone. Some people prefer to be lost.
I have to disagree w/ you on somepoints. A professional admin is not a secretary. They should understand technology and be able to edit a config file. An admin who understands the CLI is faster and more powerful than a pretty GUI will excel. Sure, Linux has an excellent GUI(s) , but the pount is it's OPTIONAL.MS is so easy, anyone can edit the registry, huh?
Even though I'm unemployed, and HAVE been for a while, I will not accept a job where more than 50% of my time is on a Microsoft technology. Nothign to do with my opinion of the company. But I've done both, and the headaches I got from MS solutions (NT, IIS, etc) have made me realize that I got into this field because i LOVE this stuff. I'm not going to do soemthing I hate. I refuse to.
I have just come to the realization that I do not have ONE Microsoft product on my system. Not one. That's a big deal actually. I can get by 100% without using one line of code from Microsoft. That probably REALLY chaps their ass. That there are millions of people who can do REAL work on their computers w/o a Microsoft product. Even Apple depends on Microsoft for something.Looking at it in a business sense, it would be in their best interest to develop SOMETHING for the Linux platform. If they dont, when Linux gets more and more popular, Microsoft will eventually phase away completely. Why do I say that? Because if millions of people can get along fine NOW w/o Microsoft, what will happen in 5 years?
The answer is who developed (that which matters) in true improvements for the human condition. I listed 7 areas (in order of importance). Technology is not alone, but ranks #3 of 7. The list is below 1) Enlightened Humanism. This resulted in individual rights, requiring limits on government. 2) Government and Justice systems (quality & fairness). 3) The scientific method. Pure Science and applied science(technology). 4) Commerce & Infrastructure. This puts products & services into the hands of society and individuals. 5) Philosophy 6) Literature 7) Not all music is equal. Is rap equal to Mozart?
I wasn't trolling...anyway, now that S. Africa got rid or Apartheid, it is now the rape capital of the world....These are facts they don't teach you in University. You do have a point about blues however...although both Blues and Jazz are American creations, inspired by Africa.
I have a Linguistics degree. How does what your Niger-Congo or Kordofanian professor said have any relevance? The US University system has been implanting hippie communist ideals into our youth for 2 decades.I never said that individuals from Africa have not contributed. I just said that the Sub-Saharan portion of Africa have not contributed anything to mankind in the past 500-1000 years. I see that you didn't disagree with me.
7,000 or 50,000, it was an arbitrary number. So , you're saying that the WHITE man has surpressed the African continent? You must've gotten your communist, liberal point-of-view from the biased US University system. While Sierra Leone may have had a peaceful election, tell me their GNP. BTW, I have a Anthropology degree (Anthopology/Linguistics), and that Anthropolgy statistic you quoted is used in Neo-Nazi literature as an aid to prove white superiority. I personally don't think climate is the reason why Africa is backwards, but the standing belief is that cultures which inhabit temperate climates are more advanced.
Most people would not consider Ancient Egypt as part of Sub-Saharan Africa. In answer to the second part of your comment, Egypt had black slaves as well. If you consider "slaves" as benefitting mankind, practically every culture has had slaves (due to war and occupation). Actually, slavery is still going on in this country on a grander scale in the form of indentured servants. Look at the state of the H1B visa. That's servitude if you ask me. Go to projectusa.org and see how these people are being taken advantage of.
How come after 7,000 years or so of Human existance, Africa STILL needs OUR help in getting runnign water???? Name one thing that has come out of Africa in the past 500 years that has benefited mankind?
I am not a republican, but I AM conservative. Similar, but very different. I am a proponenet of patriotism. American Citizens first. Anti-GLOBALIST companies. Anything that goes against the true meaning of America. I've always said a liberal is a person who's never been robbed:) Democrats should support the Green party (nader) and republicans should support Buchanan.

I agree..I have a 50 GB partition set aside for just my /home/user directory. and /usr/local/bin has it's own partition as well.. makes backups easier
Well, if FreeBSD is dying like everyone says, My FreeBSD webserver will still be running 5 years from now. It wont die for me

Like me, I was an unshakeable Atheist, and thru soul searching for 20 years have become a Protestant. Weirder things have happened.

Too bad Peru is a third world country. If it's such a great country, how come half the population of Peru lives in my neighborhood?
