I've always known this was true, but now we have a REAL company vouching it..but how does MS do it? Do they send goons in and say "if you don't install Windows we will break your legs?" I mean, how is this different from racketeering? The Mafia does that in major cities with Waste Management. You can only use THEIR company, or they break your legs or set your building on fire. WHich is very similar to how tings work in Eastern-bloc countries.

But if you don't produce results, OUT you go. Are Managers so spineless that they can't fire someone for not doing any work? Instead, they'll be passive and cut EVEVRYONE off to avoid confrontation w/ one slacker. As a rule, our UNIX admins don;t have to do shit. They're paid to be there when the shit hits the fan. They're paid to solve problems. , If problems happen ALL day, you need new admins!
We have one network admin that just sat there and when a network problem happened, he just fixed it. No one KNEW there were problems because he was always on top of it. His 30 minutes of work for the day made 95% of the company do 8 hours of work.A good 3 days out of the week he did shit form home. DId I care? Hell no..his productivity was the same..if there was something he couldnt fix from home..he came to the job. He was paid WELL for his skill. My wife's gastrointenologist gets paid $250 for a visit (which lasts maybe 5 minutes). $250 for 5 minutes of work? Yes.you're paying for his knowledge and skill, not how much he has to break his back. We are professionals, not wage slaves/factory workers. At least we SHOULD be professionals and demanding to be treated like professionals

From my vast experience, The IT dept is immune to al these rules. Everyone MUST run WIn98 with Siebel and Lotus Notes EXCEPT the IT dept. They can run what they want....but if the lead developer brings down the network (we ALWAYS know who did it), he is no longer the lead developer. Thats why people in sales if they are laid off, they can hang around for a while...in IT, they walk you out the door no less than 3 seconds after you're handed the manila envelope. They SHIP your stuff to you.(I have seen this plenty of times..including yours truly). Although your buddies in the dept will "keep" your email address for you, and ship u a free laptop along with your desk supplies. :)

If I could do it all over again, I would not take the money. Well, thse 2 guys were designing a PDA messaging system from scratch. The manager knew not a damn thing, and was expecting unrealistic goals. They had to design their own APIs for certain things. The one guy told me he spent the day researching API's and contemplating HOW to make it happen. Searching deja for similar problems solved, etc. This was all from scratch and they had nothing to go on. The main guy, who has been programming Java for 4 years or so, just didnt know HOW to do certain things, so he had to look them up, or spend an entire day figuring out HOW to make it work. I program, but not for a living. For example, I have NO idea how they wrote what they did. I'd have to spend months on researching the protocols. Like "How do I make a PDA send a signal to an stand alone speaker? They had to research electronics and hardware level stuff. To me, thats not programming. True, they shoudl have had this stuff laid out for them prior to the project, but they didn't PICK the project. One guy told me he was lucky if he wrote a line that was used for about a month. He was CONSTANTLY worried if his productivity was down because he had no clue what the acceptable level of productivity was. Could I rewrite apache from scratch? I don't know. I couldnt even tell you where I would begin. My programming knowledge consists of thngs that I know how to do. Could I make photoshop? Wouldnt even know where to start. Thats why I've never programmed for a living. How do you code something if you don't know how to do it? Where do you start?
