I own a company (although it's not as large as I'd like it to be:)) and only 2 people will be their tonite..me and my partner. I'll be with my GF until 11:30...and I'm just gonna sit at the NOC until 12:15. Whether or NOT all hell breaks loose. We're 4 blocks from Times Square..and if some Arab feels like dropping a bomb..our network will be the LAST thing on my mind:)
I am the proverbial night owl..NY is my home...at 4 AM, you could go downstairs to get pizza and WAIT on line! There are other geeks like you doing the same thing..getting Jolt and Pizza at 4 AM..life is grand!
What a joyous state when a "user" reaches zen and becomes one with the OS. I think that once a user learns the file system...the Legos all line up from there. Knowing where you are in your microcosm of user space is the first step in going elsewhere
We have to hang out dude! I feel EXACTLY the same way and always thought there was something wrong with me! A while back, I was consulting for a bank and this little-pr**k was so cocky about his MCSE and how elite he was..up to that time..I had NEVER touched NT..by choice. He was bragging about his NT skills and embarrasing himself by his lack of basic networking skills...he bet me I couldn't pass the exams..I told him I would start taking them the nEXT day, and if I passed, he would pay the fees for the test..well, I won the bet, and he never spoke to me from that point on. (OK..i cheated..I read the README.TXT on the install CD b4 I took the tests..so sue me:))
What you are saying basically is that a newbie is stupid and needs Dr Seuss instructions.A newbie means NEW, not stupid. Stupid is stupid. Although lately 85% of newbies ARE stupid:)
My first real experience with a "real" computer was using VAX thru a command prompt when i was 13. The guy at the college computer lab laughed at me sitting there and told me about man files...THAT's how I learned...pouring thru the HUGE typewritten manuals (on ditto paper!) and just typing in commands...there was NO ONE to go to for help in 1984! I'm GLAD I learned that way..no hand holding...i jumped into the lion's den and came out unscathed..that's why I get furious when WIndows users (who have it made concerning documentation) download a program thru AOL and lose it! They have zero concept of the file system...and this is not the minority..I see this every single day...a million manuals won't help if they don't open it!
Technical writing is a skill that most of us do NOT have. Most technical writers couldn't tell you the first thing about a filesystem, but can take the technical and make it easier to swallow...the get good manuals, we need people with technical writing skills..I ESPECIALLY hate the "profesionals" in my field who ask the most "obvious" ridiculous questions, completely clueless and they make twice as much as me..it's a damn shame
We are about 5 blocks from Time Square...they are predicting terrorist attacks..basically 14 million morons will be watching Dick Clark..some bastard drops a grenade...THAT's nothing...wait until 12 million panicking people start going crazy! I'd take a grenade attack any day
I am completely responsible for our network as it's my baby..I built it from the ground up and I'm not trusting anyone with my labor of love...so I'll be sitting in the NOC reading/. with the elevators shut off making sure our customers can get their friggin email.:)
If I remember correctly..companies get rank newbies to write drivers. NO one wants to write drivers. They hire an 18 year old to write drivers..then that 18 year old leaves. He has graduated. And drivers are an aftersight..that's why 90% of Windows drivers are buggy as hell...they're rushed...I think they're written while the product is being packed for shipping. It costs them nothing to write these drivers...why can't they just give the specs to the brave Linux martyrs who want to write them? I for one will NOT write drivers. It's not sexy enough for me:)
We have Caldera installed on the workstations for our regular workers (We are 100% M$ free at our company)..the install is so simple, it's actually FUN to install Caldera. It even has a game of tetris you can play while installing. Although, it is definitely not an admin's Linux. Network tools are nil. EndUser tools are rampant though. (comes with StarOffice and Wordperfect preinstalled by defaul) Caldera is DEFINITELY a distrib to show off to the brass of your company. It booted into a gui WAY before RH..Plus, at the graphical login screen, you can choose KDE, Gnome, IceWM and 4 other WindowMans. I prefer Debian for the servers though:)
I think Windows 98 is technically version 4.1 or is it 4.01? What is Windows 2000? Windows 4.2? Windows 5?

I've always thought that Jim Carrey was an artistic genius...with his ad-lib skills an absolute kookiness, he deserves more respect than he gets.
