Agreed in the most emphatic terms. However, I should note that there is a reason Mario Kart does what it does, Nintendo has taken the "No Winners" strategy towards their party games in order to make less skilled players feel less put out, while it's not necessarily a bad strategy it does sometime alienate more skilled players, but in my experience it just makes the game fun.
Ironically from MS's point of view a pirated copy of windows running on a box is better than FOSS, they will never publicly acknowledge this for obvious reasons. But as far as MS is concerned if your using MS products, legal or not, that's better than using FOSS. Why? Because if your using MS's products you get used to MS's products and are more likely to buy them later, whereas if you are using FOSS you have removed yourself from the dependence cycle and won't make MS any money. As for this so-called study... it is almost libelous towards the regular user, many of whom have fallen to the scare tactics uses by the RIAA, MPAA, and BSA, the dinosaurs of our age. In the future the BSA might want to check with their financial backers before releasing such a study, pissing off your customer base doesn't sell anything.
Skimming over the posts already here there is a plethora of good Science Fiction and Fantasy out there, however not all of it is literature, nor is all of it appropriate for a high school course. However what you select should be deliberate based on your objectives. Are you seeking?
Relevent Social Issues? I would recommend Heinlein for that like many above
Moral Struggle? Card does well here
Classical Literary and Saga techniques? Tolkien fits the bill
Distopia? Heinlein, Card, Orwell among many others mentioned above
The only other thing I would recommend is not to underestimate the maturity of your students, avoiding material with sexuality or other questionable material is not doing them any favors. Chaucer was the raunchest thing I read in high school and I'm grateful my teacher didn't gloss over it, it made it far more interesting and downright funny than the boring slog it would have been, the same goes for Shakespeare. Select the material you think is most relevent to the outcome you want to achieve regardless of how obscure it might be. However I will make the recommendation many have made above: Use short stories instead of books, most students in high school will blow off reading a book because they have "Better things" to do.
I can only think of one thing to add to this, MS has put their foot in the market too with Games for Windows Live. So it's not like there is any lack of competition.
The goal of Vista was security above all else; it came at the cost of performance, because to increase process isolation they had to increase memory usage. I have to say for all of it's flaws Vista is still a decent(egads did he just say decent and Vista in the same line I think he did!!) OS, would I recommend that someone upgrade to it from Windows XP... no, at least without new hardware. But please if you're going to gripe about windows, RTFM before griping next time.
Amen, Here in Colorado you can tell a trucker who didn't use his engine to break him, because his breaks are on fire. A seven percent grade over 30 miles will do that so as the sign says "Don't be Fooled Truckers, Keep it in Low Gear"

Having everything run as root means that if one of those services has a flaw the entire system is compromised.
technically true, on the other hand most file systems allow for forensics of some sort, no this law fails the Miranda test, on the basis that if the tech is a PI and can take the drive into evidence, it may be construed as testifying against ones self, without being informed of your rights. Furthermore it fails the 4th amendment test because even if the tech is a PI and stumbles across something it still can't be entered into evidence because they didn't have a warrant, and I very much doubt that the customer would willingly consent to such a search which is what the law requires without a warrant.

MS DID try it was called J# but Sun Obligingly ignored it completely, not that I think that was a real loss. MS has since abandoned J#, and chosen to focus on C#, which is beginning to suffer from what I term 'The Perl Problem,' others call it a feature. But I still think C#, can, and emphasis on the can, because I've seen some pretty horrible C# before that was essentially C minus pointers, Produce more readable code than C++ or Java, it is not the one true language, but it is a step in that direction, maybe one day it will occur but this is not it.
I agree whole heartily I program exclusively in C# for my job, and my one complaint, which I also hold with Java; is that both, while very powerful, have poorly documented, or well documented and poorly searchable standard libraries. C# is all over the board because MSDN is alternatively the most useful thing ever and the worlds 2nd worst documentation (The worst is none); Java on the other hand is just one big pile of Mediocre documentation, not great not but not as cursingly annoying as the random undocumented articles in MSDN can be.
May I remind you of DEC the Alpha was a great product at the time, but DEC couldn't sell candy to a glutton, so they faltered and were bought. Microsoft for all their faults can sell horse manure to everybody and make it smell like sunshine, well at least for a bit at least...
For now I don't think that either company is in much danger but only time will tell.
A friend of mine is a SDET as MS, apparently the other end of the spectrum is scary as well, MS believes that automated testing will carry them over despite the fact that reality shows differently.
On the other hand having dealt with the Google apps API I have to agree with the idea that Google's not quite all there, but then again who is?
Which is why the Vista power settings turn Aero off if set to 'Power Saver', among other things in this case the culprit is the graphics card itself not Aero the 8000 series has no power throttling.

Makes, not really, but Debian does modify so I say that qualifies as their own because it's unique to them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceweasel , and GNU has their own stab at it but Debian is the only one that ships as far as I am aware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat
