  1. I am happy that QuickPlace and Domino also 404 on Code Red Back For More · · Score: 1

I was searching for the XXXX and NNNN stuff all over (altavista, google, msdn, dejanews). Thanks for posting the request, I now know why all these useless lines are showing up in my logs.
I have noticed that Altavista and Google just don't seem to keep up any more. I guess the internet became too big for them. A few years ago I liked using Altavista.

  2. They should call it "code redmond"... on Code Red! All Hands to Battle Stations! · · Score: 3

then at least I would know that it didn't apply to any of my servers. Instead, I have to read through a few paragraphs of crap before it gets to the "IIS security flaw" line.

  3. I know it pays for free to air but... on Pop Up Advertising Continues to Suck · · Score: 1

have you actually watched free to air recently. It is really bad and most ads just insult your intelligence.
I would complain to yahoo - except I had to cancel my account when they would not agree to the Nader privacy letter.
I like NPR and the ABC (in Australia) - I guess I am in the minority here though.

I would expect them to tell the bank first. If the bank denied it, and continued to advertise they had a hack proof system, yes - tell the whole world so that my bank will fix it. I would then get my money out of there quickly and demand answers from the bank over their misleading conduct.
It is better for this information to be in the public under the world's eyes, than kept secret for crackers to exploit.
After all, if you go to the relevant web sites, they claim to use the best encryption protection available. If this is the case, what are they worried about? Why would they care about this person's presentation. According to their own web site, the presentation must be wrong and their customer's have nothing to worry about.

  5. Not to mention consumer protection... on Fallout From Def Con: Ebook Hacker Arrested by FBI · · Score: 5

This has highlighted some false claims made by a company in marketing. Does this mean that next time someone claims their software is secure, it is illegal to prove it is not?
What about consumer protection laws - this is misleading conduct on the behalf of the companies involved.

  8. Guns don't kill people... on Rootkit Developers And Legal Liability · · Score: 3

It is the same argument. However, many governments have regulated guns - it is just a matter of time before it happens.

I can't imagine keeping a software safe for all the offensive software and keeping a log of when I take it out and put it back in. That would be hard to regulate. FBI checks would also be hard to manage on ftp sites. Perhaps we can have software shows that get around the regulations.

  9. You should charge them a storage fee on Telocity Wants Its Gateways Back · · Score: 3

This is quite common. If someone leaves a piece of "valuable" property at your place under your care. You are obliged to take reasonable care of it. You should be able to charge rent for the sq ft it occupies in your apartment. In some cases, you might be safe to guard it and insure it. You might even consider adding on some dog food and insurance costs to the storage bill.

  10. They are just another organization; you can say no on Your Daily Dose of Microsoft · · Score: 1

How many people love playing with new hardware and consistently swap bits between their various machines. I think we will need to call them up at least 5 times a month - depending on how may toys we buy.

If that doesn't waist their time enough, we should take them to small claims if their hold times become too long at a peak time.

We could all arrange a time to do some group upgrades and all call in for the new install number. That would be fun.
