the sense i got from Ram was that he was a regular joe, who understands his job is bullshit but can't get out of it, so he engages in self-deprecating humor to make it through. most of america talks like that at the bar after work.

sark: the whole point was that the MCP was an unsustainable over-centralized model that was removing the flexibility of the system; stet.

also the i/o towers were blue because they were the last vestige of open communication, in opposition to the MCP. it's not until the events of the movie that they finally get around to killing DuMont and, presumably, knocking the grid off the network at large.

it's thematically very consistent for a movie where a company with a functional teleportation device (!) makes most of its money from selling video games (!!).

yes, this is exactly the right way to do it. it was a light-hearted romp which featured corporate malfeasance and corruption; liberated and powerful computer enthusiasts; an interestingly-clad Angelina Jolie; and a great period soundtrack. what exactly is wrong with any of this?

when i was in high school, it inspired a few otherwise-uninterested people to learn a little bit about computers, and was kind of a "cult classic" among those of us who already were. the people who were offended by it were (mostly) posers. i mean, come on, the tagline on the posters was "just when you thought it was safe to turn on your hard drive" or something ridiculous like that. it's pure cheese and that's just fun, no matter how serious it was meant to be (i suspect not at all).

also, "risc is good" was poetry compared to "it's got a 28.8 bee-pee-ess modem!" and "i bet it looks crispy in the dark."

meth is technically more legal than any of your ought-to-be-legal examples above; it's schedule II since it's approved for treating ADHD (!!) and morbid exogenous obesity. of course it's probably almost impossible to get a prescription for it; i'm sure no doctor wants to risk their license in actually doing so.

it's a little weird that DEA hasn't moved meth to schedule I given all the real damage it causes; a case could be made that marijuana and MDMA have more medicinal use than meth, and DEA seems totally unmoved by that. maybe it's just inertia.

Both could be true. As long as a trademark isn't portrayed in a way that might negatively influence the perception of the product, it's legit to use. I've heard that Apple has a public position that they are very lenient on this, whereas most other computer companies don't. If true, then Apple effectively gets product placement (if measured by number of appearances, as in TFA) without formally negotiating product placement (which is what Apple is claiming). They're just a safe choice for a recognizable computer, and it's a clever strategy.

the multitouch is beautiful, but sometimes i still miss my old trackpoint. still, the trackpoint is not perfect.

thinkpad trackpoints tend to have a drift which can be very annoying and also it wears out the LCD screen at the contact point. buying a 3-pack of replacement nubs for $10 every year or so is also irritating. also, a more general issue, the continual pressure on my fingertip actually causes pain with heavy use. it's tolerable, but a user interface which causes pain can hardly be considered ideal...

the real problem with the trackpad isn't moving my fingers more (this is a fine tradeoff for solving the pressure issue) - the problem is that it's hard to do a cross-screen drag without setting the sensitivity so high as to interfere with precision work. the trackpoint gives you both, which is nice.

i meant that the Banshee default would be best if UNet < 0.3AGross, and that the Canonical position is best if UNet > 0.3AGross. The latter is VERY unlikely, so GNOME is getting shafted relative to the default (but may pull out ahead, as i say above).

  15. Re:Flamebait on Canonical To Divert Money From GNOME · · Score: 4, Informative

fair enough. let's see if i have this gordian knot figured.

the banshee team default position is to take nothing for themselves and pass on the full referrer fee, i.e. 0.1 of banshee amazon purchases, to GNOME. banshee's amazon service steps on Canonical's ubuntu one service, so Canonical didn't like that and offered to give 25% to GNOME, making it 0.025 of banshee amazon purchases. banshee was pissed and wanted the amazon part removed completely from the ubuntu distro. Canonical is overriding this (it's their distro and the code is Free) but as a sop is kicking in 25% of their ubuntu one profit to GNOME.

apparently banshee has no financial self-interest in this matter, while Canonical has their own. if Canonical went with the banshee default, GNOME would get 0.1 of all amazon's gross profit through banshee (call it AGross). under Canonical's first offer, GNOME would get 0.025*AGross. under banshee's (imho rather hissy) counter-offer GNOME would get _nothing at all_ from ubuntu users. Canonical overrides this and makes the "benevolent dictator" offer that GNOME gets 0.025*AGross plus 25% of Canonical's net profit from ubuntu one, for a total of 0.025*AGross+0.25*UNet.

Yeah, Canonical are being assholes here (and it's worth noting, taking a very large middleman cut). However, GNOME's worst outcome would have been Banshee's counteroffer. The banshee default, which is 0.1*Agross, would be best for GNOME if UNet0.3AGross. I do find the latter VERY unlikely, so yeah, GNOME is getting shafted relative to the banshee default. On the other hand, they are doing better than if banshee had run their scorched earth policy, and Canonical has (imho) earned some soft social capital by offering a user-friendly linux and is thus delivering new money to GNOME.

here is the run-down: canonical benefits; banshee gets screwed but loses nothing in terms of cash; GNOME... well, it really depends on how big the buying-music-through-linux market is. i wouldn't personally be surprised if ubuntu quadruples this market, so GNOME may well pull out ahead.

in the bigger picture, it does seem a bit unfair in retrospect that novell (the banshee sponsor) fore went the first cut of these banshee-deals. on the other hand, they're novell...
