A nuke explosion at high altitude achieve this easily without the difficulty to conceal such device in ennemy field...
The eletromagnetic pulse thus cretaed would burn almost all non shielded (military says 'hardenned'?) electronic devices...
(This means cars,computers,VCR...)
I've been in a similar situation twice (although with 2 differents role(once as an employee and lately as an officer))
My advice would be : don't make the mistake to stay on a sunking ship to be loyal...
loyalty only mean that you must not betray other people who rely on you, but face iy : if you stay it will only make the agony last...
By the way we could expand this notion of loyalty : be loyal is to respect your part of your contract as long as the company respect his part ( are you sure they respect all the terms, are you sure you get all you deserve, all they promised ?)
When a company fired someone for economical reason, everybody finds it normal (it's necessary for the wealth of the society...)
Why should you feel guilty then ?
In my experience, the main problem was the other employees (some are friends), I thought like you that If I leave they'll eventually leave their job.
But the fact is that if I leave some of them will take new responsabilities and evolve.
My salary isn't as high as I want but If I leave it will be one less weigth on the balance...
I've stood in the society, an small startup now becoming a tiny classical society with no evolution for all my (our) sacrifices.
And what I see now is people leaving because anyway a bad job is a bad job...
And when something doesn't work you have to try something else...
A lot of people have difficulties (I do)
to re-adapt their judgment to the new facts and end things to start something news.
Forget the moral judgements and balance all the positive/negative aspect for you and the people you care...
I think the things will be clearer...
I could go for our on this subject, but I'll just ask you :
Do you have a family ?
If yes you owe more to your family than to your society : EVOLVE ! accept better propositions...
Yesterday the minister cancel her previous declarations, and said that there won't be any tax on computer and computer related media (Hard disk), but it remains unclear if other media will be taxed (flash memory for MP3 player, and digital recorder devices)
One thing is certain : I still have to pay this tax for author each time I buy a CDR to backup some of my own data !!
What's going to happen to U.S./European relations ? The real question is rather What's going to happen to GB/European relations ? Indeed the whole mess is rather directed toward GB.
Because of its situation inside Europe (as a member)and the fact that communications were intercepted for the US from Great britain is really perceive as a trahison...
All European knows that each country practise Economic Intelligence (French DGSE was even pointed out before) the problem isn't really Intelligence but rather the real commintment of GB in the Europe.
Especially in those times were the French President M. CHIRAC) is proposing the idea of a pionneer group (France and Germany) dedicated to make Europe grow faster and stronger... The real commitment of GB (which has a special status in Europe and has never hide its anti-Europe opinions) is the real question...
I mean a lot of computers pass their "ITSEC"/"TCSEC"/"Critères Communs" test and appear to be vulnerable. Even those models seem flawed to me in a sense that they tend to make people think that once the test passed the system can be trusted !!! That's wrong for many reasons : 1) A computer secure at a time may be insecure later as a new vulnerability appear. (I know that periodic audit is part of the certification, but can we trust the audit process(Is it really up-to-date?) 2) Security isn't only the hardware/software, most people underestimate the human factor which is to my mind by far the weakest point of the security chain. (Even those (maybe certified) MI5 laptop where lost...) 3) those formal system models can't be 100% sure (think to godel theorem...) I've read in a book (orange book?) : This system must be proven without any kind of covert channel ! How can you proove that ? Were the boxes in 1980 tested against TCP/IP covert channel ?(Read G. ROWLAND excellent article !) So the real question to my mind isn't : Can open source be trusted ? but rather is there a real formal method to certify that a computer can be trusted ?
I thing that the main difficulty/need on the net is to find pertinent info ! Search engines exists but indexing isn't enough for me, in particular the info has to be 'rated'(evaluated) to be truly usable. In fact I'd like an agent which would provides me some links and enhance his evaluating function with my feedback ! but to be even more efficient this agent should reevaluate his function with other agents of the same family... Let's imagine that Agents exchange 'links' and Evaluation function parameters... (GA comes to mind...) Each agent should be able to evolve and make its evaluation function better using other agents parameters... I mean If agentA gives another agent (AgentB)'good' sites (sites well rated by AgentB user feedback) , AgentB should use AgentA parameters (combine with its own) to ehance the evaluation function... GA for the evaluation function tuning Neural network for the evaluation (Neural network should be efficient for site rating -> Input=request , output=URL : evaluation=user rating...) Don't you have enough to play with ? BTW : When I say evaluation function you could even think indexing functions...
