Indians never win against the cowboys - this is old news. Now, someone comes along and tells us how ignorant we are for mistaking Indians for Native Americans. *shrugs*
How so, exactly? You will note that I do NOT advocate that women should be kept barefoot and pregnant, and kept out of any field of work. I am arguing against some vapid revolutionary concept that the world should be forced to push women into a field that many women find uninteresting.
Go ahead - read all those previous posts again. The basic premise is, there are few women who own or manage a particular type of company. There are few women in senior positions in the field. Hence, something is wrong with society, and we should mandate changes.
I say, "Why?" Are there large numbers of women who WANT into these positions and fields? Are women intentionally being shut out?
Let's see some evidence. I don't mean anecdotes by one or six activists, some or all of whom may simply be incompetent. Let's see some statistics regarding the women who have struggled and worked to get into the field, and were unfairly shot down by callus fools who are members of the Good Old Boys club.
I also argue against government quotas and subsidies aimed at fixing what I see as a nonexistent problem. You want quotas and/or subsidies? Prove that there is a problem. Show me that women are being discriminated against, and you'll get my vote.
Meanwhile - how many ethnic Persians own corporations in Silicon Valley? How many ethnic Kurds? How many Jews? Should we mandate that every group in the world who might conceivably claim some sort of prejudice be subsidized, as well?
Alright, you bring more good points into the discussion. Yes, there is pressure to conform. And since sports have already been mentioned, I'll talk about my "sporting" career.
I was a natural born runner. I could run all day long, as long as I could choose my own pace. I could run extremely fast, for short distances. In short - I could beat the majority of our high school champion runners in most events. When the coaching staff discovered that I could run, they wanted me badly. I experience some of that pressure. But, I decided after one year that I didn't WANT to compete in track and field. Just walked away from it.
Likewise with gymnastics. I was good, and the coaches wanted me.
I sucked at football, baseball, basketball, but I was a great runner, and a pretty decent gymnast.
I said "No." I just didn't fit into the jock crowd, even peripherally.
So - why is it harder for a girl to just say "No" to society's expectations? Is there any chance that she really is hardwired to do what is expected of her? Maybe the studies don't give enough weight to genetics?
You're cool - my hang up on that phrase was my hang up, really. I completely overlooked your name - and I forgot for a moment that we aren't all Americans speaking the same dialect of English as our mother tongues. Had I bothered to absorb the name "Dmitry" I would have been reminded of that fact.:)
Oh, don't fear "talking down" to me. Just try talking sense.
As I stated - society has worked reasonably well for millenia, with the males out taking risks, and women generally occupying their CHOSEN niches, in relative safety.
A relatively small percentage of today's population is unhappy with this arrangement, and they work hard to change society.
Do you have the least shred of evidence that society will be stronger, or that either males or females will be happier if you succeed?
Are today's women who work for a living really HAPPIER than their grandmothers who stayed at home, and tended the hearth?
I suspect that with a name like "eldavajohn" you are no more qualified to answer that question than I am. Maybe some of the ladies would like to chime in? If so - feel free!
My position is, activists are much to ready to change society, with no clue as to what unforeseen results we might see.
Mmmmm. You *might have* phrased your second sentence differently. I got kind of hung up on "prefer horizontal relations". It took a small effort to understand what your point was.;^)
But, your point is valid. I seldom take much notice of the competition between women, but, yes, it is there. And, you're right - it is the risk taking that separates the genders, more than any level of competition.
Bottom line is, you have no sense of respect for ages old cultural values, and you want to experiment. You don't like anything about the "status quo", and you think a different status would be better. All of this, despite the fact that you have NO EVIDENCE to support your new status.
What do you envision, precisely? That the population is divided evenly, with 50% males, and 50% females, and both sexes equally represented in ALL professions, hobbies, avocations?
While you are engaged in your social engineering, what exactly are you going to do about other genetic characteristics? You're going to mandate that x% of our representative government consists of genetically disabled people? Including morons (not a socially acceptable term, but accurate) psychos, and idiot savants? How about midgets? How about people like me, who are color blind? Is the world ready for a hemophiliac as president?
We simply cannot all be alike. More, I don't WANT to be like everyone else. I certainly don't want to be like you - anymore than you want to be like me!
How about a little bit of "Live and let live"?
If Suzie WANTS to play with her Raggedy Ann, or Barbie, why SHOULDN'T she? Boys are allowed to play with dolls - they just usually choose G.I Joe.
FFS - the entire issue of female ownership is partly genetics. Women aren't as competitive as men are. It's a fact. Get over it. We don't need any more equal opportunity programs, we don't need morons meddling in people's natures. Those women who ARE competitive should certainly not be held back because they are women - but get any group of women together, and they quickly determine how to COOPERATE. Unlike the guys. With us, some muscle brain has to establish his alpha-dog dominance, and he leads. Simple as that.
Guys enjoy cutthroat competition more often than women do, so guys get into occupations that make use of it. We can't all become pussies, so that women can compete. Nor can they grow muscle, or manipulate their psychological makeup to compete with the guys.
Liberals need to get a grip on reality. Our nation wasn't built by sensitive little gayboys.

Every time I see the well known fact that slashdot readers have no women in their lives, I start wondering. What about the female slashdot readers? Are there no women in their lives? Are they really women? Do they have lives?
You might call it marching to the beat of a different drum, rather than leeching.
Have you not been paying attention? Those advertisements are a vector with which to bypass security measures. Pay for the internet? DUHHH - my DSL is paid for. $79/month. What exactly am I helping anyone to pay for, if I permit advertisers to pwn my machines?
Maybe you're suggesting that I've done something immoral every time in my life that I've NOT WATCHED a commercial on television? Hmmm. There should be a law, huh? Get up and go to the kitchen during a commercial, the "Commercial Cops" bust down your door, and waterboard you or something.
You want rights? Alright - the day we defeat Eastasia, we'll start thinking about rights. Ooops, my mistake - Eastasia is our ally this month, it's Eurasia we have to defeat!
Color coding? I hate it. Give me the exclamation marks - I never miss them. Or, almost never, anyway. I suppose they used red fonts? Completely invisible. Websites put up big red banners and warnings all the time, to inform me of an error. That stupid banner is the LAST THING I see on the page. Login fails? The red print that tells me so is all but invisible.
The only color coding that has ever actually worked for me, is when MS operating systems use BLUE for compressed folders. I see the blue just fine. Of course, it's not really very important that I be reminded that I've compressed this folder or that, or that I compress the entire drive inside a virtual machine to save space.
"I've read the story from many people, yet no one has ever given specifics."
Imagine that I actually had ACCESS to the patient's charts. Imagine that I posted those charts, complete with opinions, facts, diagnosis, and prognosis. Imagine me going to jail for violating the kid's privacy, not to mention the family's privacy. Maybe what you want to do is to alert some journalistic investigator to the concept that some children die or are badly damaged by inoculations of various kinds. I posted a good source of information in an earlier post. Yes, the MMR vaccine actually causes brain damage. Rarely, but it does so.
"Please stop spreading stupidity."
Not a bad idea. Go get the facts for yourself. Visit any Children's Hospital. You are unlikely to find better doctors anywhere. You are unlikely to find more information anywhere. Go, visit, get up close and personal with the men and women who actually care for kids. Get their opinions on vaccinations.
Bottom line? Inoculations kill kids. They kill only a small percentage of the kids who WOULD HAVE DIED of the diseases that the inoculations are meant to prevent - but still, they kill kids. There is plenty of empirical evidence - enough to convince impartial, serious researchers.
Disprove that last statement, if you can. Otherwise, it is you who is spreading stupidity.
"Economists have modeled cap and trade versus the other alternatives "
Economists also told us that the price of real estate could only go up. What happened to that housing bubble? Oh yeah, the economists either lied, or they were so ignorant that they believed their own bullshit.
Cap and trade. How does that work, exactly? Does it actually reduce the total of emissions, globally?
Of course not. A steel plant is shut down on the Rhine, where government regulation limits total emissions to some standard that has been found acceptable. The plant is moved to someplace in Africa, or Asia, where there are no government regulations. The plant owner saves tons of money, not only on cheap labor, but thanks to the lack of emissions standards. Now, he can dump ALL emissions into the atmosphere and the water. No need to put scrubbers in the chimneys, or filter the water that is dumped.
Actually, emissions are very likely to INCREASE, globally.
Cap and trade. Yet another method for corporations to dump skilled labor, and hire cheap labor. Yes, of course management has full faith in their own ability to manufacture cheap goods with uneducated workers. They are management, after all, and they are almost infallible. Hey - they convinced the general populations in dozens of countries that cap and trade would benefit them, they MUST be infallible!
It's good to see the con artists being ripped off. For once, I feel good about money being stolen. Or, more accurately, I can feel good about stolen money being stolen from the original thieves.
"but the school certainly has every right to monitor their networks."
I disagree - strongly. The school is NOT supposed to be a police force, period. The ONLY things a campus should police is the physical safety of it's staff, students, and visitors. No school should attempt to be the moral enforcement arm of government, or of corporate America. I find it offensive to think that some schools aid and abet the extortion racket that RIAA engages in.
"Your 1 in 20 million anecdote is not compelling - far more people would have died for not being vaccinated if the vaccines were removed."
And, what precisely did I post, originally? I posted that the inoculations weren't completely safe - but it was safer than doing without them. Go back, and reread, and you won't look so damned silly repeating the same thing I said, just to argue with me.
As for links - what did I post? READ THE DAMNED WARNING BROCHURES THAT ARE OFFERED WITH EVERY SHOT!!! If you are literate, then you will find a notice much like this one. ESPECIALLY NOTE the final side effect: o Permanent brain damage
MMR vaccine side-effects (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) What are the risks from MMR vaccine?
A vaccine, like any medicine, is capable of causing serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. The risk of MMR vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small.
Getting MMR vaccine is much safer than getting any of these three diseases.
Most people who get MMR vaccine do not have any problems with it.
Mild Problems
* Fever (up to 1 person out of 6)
* Mild rash (about 1 person out of 20)
* Swelling of glands in the cheeks or neck (rare)
If these problems occur, it is usually within 7-12 days after the shot. They occur less often after the second dose.
Moderate Problems
* Seizure (jerking or staring) caused by fever (about 1 out of 3,000 doses)
* Temporary pain and stiffness in the joints, mostly in teenage or adult women (up to 1 out of 4)
* Temporary low platelet count, which can cause a bleeding disorder (about 1 out of 30,000 doses)
Severe Problems (Very Rare)
* Serious allergic reaction (less than 1 out of a million doses)
* Several other severe problems have been known to occur after a child gets MMR vaccine. But this happens so rarely, experts cannot be sure whether they are caused by the vaccine or not. These include:
o Deafness
o Long-term seizures, coma, or lowered consciousness
o Permanent brain damage
Note: The first dose of MMRV vaccine has been associated with rash and higher rates of fever than MMR and varicella vaccines given separately. Rash has been reported in about 1 person in 20 and feverin about 1 person in 5. Seizures caused by a fever are also reported more often after MMRV. These usually occur 5-12 days after the first dose.

Going for funny, huh? No stupid, not the cleaning lady.
One of my son's doctors also tended on the little vegetable. I also struck up a freindship with the boy's father (mother abandoned father and son soon after the boy was diagnosed, and she understood his future). We had some rather open discussions during the few weeks that my son was in Children's hospital.
As I said, the staff was VERY CERTAIN what caused the boy's condition. He was a healthy little kid, he got some shots, and he collapsed into a writhing heap within a few hours. They saved his life - if you can call it a life. The kid just drools on himself, doesn't recognize anyone, reacts to almost nothing, and is fed through a tube.
I speak from experience - yes. Experience that began back in school. See, I was the 6 foot tall 90 pound stringbean. I was a primary target for bullies, and I changed schools pretty frequently.
One day, I decided that I had just had ENOUGH of being intimidated. First bully to walk up to me was told to fuck off. He put his hands on me, to teach me a lesson, and I went postal on his ass. The dude was pretty stout, and he really did put a hurting on me - but he didn't like the pain that he received in return. There were two more incidents at that school, then it was clear sailing for me until I changed schools again.
At the next school (a much smaller school) there was only one incident. Word got around real fast that the new kid wasn't real strong, but he knew where to hit you to make it hurt. Besides which, it hurts to hit the skinny bastard - he's all BONES!
As an adult? Yeah, I've dealt with a lot of kids, including some bullies. I've told two of them that if they didn't straighten up, I was going to talk to their parents - with a baseball bat. I got some braggadocio in reply - but they DID straighten up.
As I said - you bargain with a bully in terms that he can understand.
Child abuse? In cases like this, I'll take my chances. I can always go file charges on the little turd for assaulting me, get an injunction against him, then beat the shit out of him in "self defense". That's one way to CYA.
("You're here and you're smaller than me so you're gonna get beat up")
Believe me, I've been there. The solution? Accept that you are going to get beaten up, then set out to make the experience as painful as possible for the guy beating up on you. Yeah, he hammered you to a pulp - but if you managed to get in one good shot and broke his nose, he will never come back for more. In fact, the fight ended when the pain speared from his nose into his pea sized brain. Never give up, and never stop fighting, and even the densest of bullies will come to understand that you're not an easy target.
This is the post I was looking for, LOL

So - I'm sitting here, reading about this newest manifestation of exploitable exploits, and wondering: "how does all this affect Debian?"
Then you offer up some solutions that would actually start to FIX THE PROBLEMS.
No script - check.
Adblock plus - check.
Turn off Flash - check.
Ditch silverlight/moonlight - check.
Disable Java - check.
What's left? Oh yeah - don't click on obvious bogus links, and don't agree to download a virus scanner. Like, I really need on on Debian.
What does that leave? Hmmmm. A damn good firewall - check. Firestarter may not be the best, but it hasnt' failed me yet!
Has anyone mentioned in this thread yet, that security is not a product - instead it is an ongoing process? I guess I just did.
Houston, all systems are go. May we have clearance for lift off?
