  1. Energy on Get an ACME Klein bottle! · · Score: 2

If we could harness the Slashdot effect, instead, we could provide enough energy to power the world's servers.

By the way-- the site is down now. :)

  2. ICANN & NetSol on ICANN Registers Improper Domain Names · · Score: 1

Although objective journalism is important, the danger is not domain names ending with hyphens, it's a single company (i.e. Network Solutions) owning all the domains.

Thankfully, that disaster was averted at the proper time-- when the Internet was truly gaining momentum. Most people concur that this is indeed only the beginning of the revolution.

I, for one, am glad that this speed bump occured. If anything, it reminds people that domains are no longer owned by a single company, and reminds them of the ridiculous errors said company made over the past few years.

The reason I mostly go to an IRC #linux channel is to ask them: what command will do what I want?

If there was some manual indexing or keyword-associated search effort, this need would be eliminated, and I could focus on solving problems instead of figuring out what the commands are.

  5. Uptime on Compaq Offers Free Beowulf Test Drives · · Score: 3

One should hope they've minimized some of the problems I experienced when they first started this program. Of them, the most common was simply 'connection refused.' I'm not sure if it was the Slashdot effect or something I was missing.

And now the obvious question.. Why Alphas? Are Beowulf clusters possible on Intels?

  6. Re:Visibility with HUDs on Driving with Night Vision · · Score: 1

Not at all. A transclucent layer would only be effective if it was superimposed upon the entire front windshield which it's not.

Forget the dramatization you saw and look at the actual photo someone else posted, and you'll see that it's a very much non-transcluent projection which remains primarily in a very small portion of your peripheral vision. It doesn't overlay the entire windshield.

I also saw a Ford commercial a while ago in which a green outline of a diamond would highlight objects on the road as they went by. This would suggest that they've at least seriously considered adding a similar feature to their cars.

  7. Not a Surprise on Has AOL Ruined Netscape? · · Score: 1

Is it any coincidence that ZDNet first comes up with an article announcing the death of Netscape's Navigator product line a few days ago, when Mozilla is well up and running, being possibily one of the best and most popular open-source projects ever, and now, just as conveniently, do another announcement reinforcing the notion that Netscape is dead?

Even if they substantiate their ideas, it should hardly be taken as reality with the track record that they have.

  8. Re:"At the order of the RIAA"? on CMU Cuts off Net Access for 71 Students Over MP3s · · Score: 1
CM is doing nothing more than protecting its interest by respecting the law.

The RIAA's influence has absolutely no basis on law, and CMU was in no way "protecting its interest." Through this act, they can no longer protect themselves from liability through carrier status, as they've clearly defined themselves as moderators.

By implicitly claiming responsibility for this event, they've opened the door for other violations; they can not be liable for one event, yet not another. A similar issue was raised recently when Yahoo moderated a number of posts on their message boards.

Let the RIAA serve up a court order. Then, you can say that CMU was "respecting the law."

Plot? There was no plot. There were "events," but certainly not a plot. And after a while, these "events" became very predictable. The typical mix of hysteria with insanity permeated through to each of them until it became humorous.

I think they were screaming at the end becuase they dropped their $15,000 camera; the most expensive piece of equipment on the set.

The only thing I can't seem to figure out is why a majority of NASA's exploration programs are going to be cut because of a slight 10% decrease. It makes sense that out of 10 programs, only one (of average cost) should suffer.
