How about using fibre channel? Its already an established standard. The actual hard drives are getting very cheap. I see 9 gig fibre channel drives for around $100 at some places. Unfortunately the cost of the controller is like $500.

Sun hardware is extremely reliable and well designed. Sure it costs a lot for something like ram, but its guaranteed to work no matter what, no questions asked. Solaris is a great OS, they created NFS and it scales just as well as irix. Need a second cpu? Just install it. No need to change or configure anything. I have an old Sparc2 running OpenBSD 2.4 sitting here and its about the most stable box around. In over a year NOTHING has EVER CRASHED. *nothing* Not one app, not the OS. For anything mission critical x86 is not the answer. Pixar didn't render toy story 2 on sun boxes for the hell of it.

Making a windows client is their top priority because its their main customer base. I know that none of you here would pay for it, and thats a shame. Their product is good because they put money and R&D into it. Thats why they charge for software.

I'm saying they should stop bashing everything not related to linux or opensource. Want to bash a non opensource linux app? Look at the mpegtv player. They sell binaries and not the source!! those bastards, how dare they charge money for code that should be free.

  21. Ok on BSD BOF at LinuxWorld · · Score: 0

I'll start. FreeBSD uses a multi threaded tcp/ip stack where linux's is single threaded. Only in the 2.3.xx devel kernels are they experimenting with threads. That explains why linux came in last on the performance benchmark that CNN just ran. They noticed linux would slow down and stop when it got hit with a heavy load. My opinion of the tcp/ip stack being better is based on yahoo and cdrom.com. If linux is so much faster, don't you think they would have switched over?

  23. finally a good media player for linux on Microsoft Plans Media Player for Linux? · · Score: 0

Lets state the facts here, Xanim quite frankly sucks. Sure it can play postage sized quicktime movies with 4 year old codecs, but nothing recent like mpeg or asf. Sure theres that mpegtv player for linux, its better but its SLOW compared with windows. It gets around 15fps on an mpeg encoded at 30. I'm suprised you havn't blasted them for not making it opensource. MS media player works great on windows and its free. Maybe Xanim would be better if someone actually bought the docs for the codecs and some money got involved. Oh wait, money doesn't mean anything to you. Free this free that, how do you expect a company to make any money? Before you shout redhat and va linux you should look at their stocks. Redhat won't be making money for another few years.

Its all about money. Thats why you don't see realplayer releasing windows and linux players at the same time. Their linux development is on the back burner. The majority of the people who buy realplayer are companies, which still use windows on the desktop. So if 95% of their clients buy windows players, why should they give linux development an equal amount of money?
