  2. Which is what? on High-Speed Broadband Making Headway In the US · · Score: 1

I live in Edmonton, AB, Canada. Our real only choice is to use the cable provided internet service from Shaw.ca. They have a service which claims to double your download speed. This uses software to temporarily increase your bandwidth from anything from 10 to 20 seconds, and barely makes any difference to a download. Unless you are willing to spend $93.00 a month for increased bandwidth, which is nonsense considering that all speeds depend on the server and hops and remote latency. Check out the services at http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/Nitro/ I'm outraged that the service that I used to pay $40.00/month now costs over $50.00, and my current service for the same price has dropped to less than dsl speeds - as a current customer I am not qualified to receive any of the 'free' or 'discounted' services and to upgrade my service I have to buy the modem that they are giving away.

Joe Public does run other OS's(syntax?) that's why there are so many Linux forums and mailing lists. It works quite well.

Does commercial really mean superior? I have seen many instances where Open Source or GPL is superior to commercial. Many users like myself would rather run something that works than something that is 'commercial'.

I don't scoff at them, nor will I argue that they have the right to their own beliefs. My grandfather died at Vimy Ridge so that they would have the right to beleive in what they choose, I may disagree with what they believe, but I will not ridicule them for their beleifs. I simply pitty the victims that are taken in, and choose to stand up for their rights when they are incapable of doing so on their own.

  5. Green or Greenhouse? on IT Vs. the Permanent Energy Crisis · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why is it that the same people wanting IT to be green are the same people that want IT to deliver 5 9's, as well as complete security for anything that could possibly violate the integrity of the personal information that they submit on an inter/intranet? The server and it's software either has to work, or else chaos will move in and take over - what happened to bitching at the hardware manufacturers for their shortfall? Why should hardware and software work less than the brave and pioneering IT's that we have all come to know and love? (and trust with our deepest secrets).

They do own the patent on their search engine. Just try to re-engineer it and see how fast your butt winds up in court. They don't own a patent on other types of search engines. Which is what I will assume that you meant. The last time that I checked they don't prevent you from making or using a different search engine, or even prevent advertisers from entering agreements with others. This will be a tough case to prove.

It certainly does fall in the realm where they could sue, assuming they CAN identify whomever is resoponsible. It was after all their time and money that was spent initially taking down the material - as well as reposting it. That would show a siginificant loss for them. They would probably be unable to sue on points beyond that loss.
