hey - not too long ago, they came out with a new procedure called Intacs. it's basically a ring that they put on your eye (actually, just under on of the top layers of your eye, i think) which does the same thing as the laser, but has two MAJOR betterments: 1. no halo side-effects, and 2. ABSOLUTELY REVERSIBLE! if it doesn't work for you, you just have them taken back out again, and there's no residual effect! recently cnn ran an article about the procedure, read it here
they compare all the currently available procedures, but i was really interested in the intacs, and the information i have found since then does back up the stuff on cnn. so, hey - give this a thought!
ya know, we should take it easy on the kid. i mean, maybe he's *not* a real punk. or a real hacker.
but he plays one on MTV...
maybe they just hired him and gave him a few vids and told him what they thought a "punk hacker kid" should look/act/talk like (and what is that, actually?) and off he went? like those shows aren't completely staged!
*shrug* well, hey...whatever. everybody's gotta do somethin...
"Maybe I'm ignorant, but who's undocumented? I can't think of a circumstance where you would be legally in this country and working and not be documented. It seems impossible."
the option you're missing here is under-the-table work, which is what MOST aliens do. the point is, most aliens working in this country ALREADY work for people willing to knowingly employ illegal workers and avert the laws, so this super-id isn't going to change that. those people who already hire illegals are not going to suddenly start asking for the super-id when they've never bothered to do the paperwork before now!
nice idea, mr. congressman, but i think you've missed the point. why not just spend the money on a few extra immigration agents??
ya know, i just (like 30 minutes ago) finished reading ender's game, and it is odd to me how much of it applies.... perhaps all the answers are already here, we just need to think a minute about how to arrange them. certainly without some sort of at least vague leadership, we won't get anywhere, and deciding where to get is another big question.
and in all truth, i begin to wonder who is manipulating whom? there will always be sheep, they don't even factor into this. although our definition does. are we, the elite, being manipulated as well? playing into their hands while we think we are foiling them? like ender...
*shrug* who knows, but i figure we probably are. in all honesty, i'm not so paranoid to take it all to heart all the time...and even if i were, there are parts of me that wonder if it's bad. our country doesn't filter out the best of the best; we don't sequester our talent or requisition it to state use. but it's all just left out there, on the "free market". how else is the government - for the moment we'll actually imagine that they might be working in our interest - going to encourage us to push forward? alright...that image didn't last very long!
but the myth of privacy is long gone in my life, and in all honesty, it really hasn't affected me much. i'm quite certain that there's really not anything about my life that isn't catalogued *somewhere*, but so far, it hasn't been a negative influence. and it might not be for years...or maybe i just don't know it. but i'm certainly sick of outraged soccer-moms with barely a braincell to tie their shoes bouncing up and down about how very important their personal privacy is!
i agree... here where i live (cambridge ma), the freaks and the geeks are one. it's kinda nice, cause it merges a lot of problems. a lot of us really are sick of being labeled, categorized, or "understood". those, are [go ahead, flame me] the types who are getting all offended here; not big on sharing themselves with people who *might* hurt them. understandably. i realize this is bordering on touchy-feeley psycho-babble, but it's 6 on friday and i'm fried. anyway, yeah, a lot of us are gonna be overly cautious about people "trying to understand". i, though, don't mind too much. i've found that trying to help my mom "understand" (that and i think turning 25 helps) has really helped us in our relationship...is it gonna make the world right? nah. but i don't mind the ones who are *honestly* trying to bridge the gap. especially cause katz is respectful and seems to get it.
ya know, i'd be inclined to agree with you [and then lump matrix in with these anyway, cause i loved it] but for one thing: in my experience, ONLY the geeks liked the matrix. i tried taking some of my 'normal' friends to see it, and the two with philosophy degrees were the only two who liked it.
yeah, the matrix had its issues, but i'm gonna be inclined to agree with katz on this one...he may be romanticizing the whole thing a little, but hey - that's his style. and i certainly don't think that starwars lacks "staying-power"...it'll be around just the same as its predecessors. but, now that the matrix hype is gone, i really think it's going to slide onto the same shelf as clockwork orange, army of darkness, and mst3k...
i'm hoping you'll come back and read the replies to your post, and if you do: *please* let me know more about this film...it's hard to find good russian-topic stuff in america (much more so actual russian-stuff) and i like to keep my eyes open. mail me? ykaterina@hotmail.com
