I realize that politics play huge role in scientific development and progress, but why involve governments at all. Now I know that my idea might seem a little far fetched, but here it is: All non-corporate scientists would work for a section of the UN. Their research would be funded by each government putting X, Y, or Z percent of their budget into the project, depending on the economic status of their country, and all the scientists would be able to draw from that pool. This would mean that the scientists would be unaffected by politics. There would, of course, be a governing group, it would be made up of one representative from each government, who would make decisions regarding the government.
I realize that my idea might sound very strange, but it could work, if implemented properly.
Actually, the amount of knowledge and experience that Open Source developers get when writing software is equivalent to at least 1-2 full year classes on writing software. Plus, they can do it on their own, and will find it easier to distribute. For example, when you go to interview for a job, it's very nice to be able to say, "Oh yeah, I wrote Gaim (a gnome AIM app)." or "I actually worked on the kernel development for Mandrake Linux." But, I guess that it's just my opinion, but then again, that's what/. is all about.
If we start manipulating the DNA of our children, how far might this lead? We could have parents specialising their children's genes so that they are more inclined to play the cello, or go into medicine. I know that genetics aren't the only factors in development, but when combined with influence from their parents, children could end up living a pre-chosen path. What about the right of the child to go along the path that they choose? What about the idea that there is a greater force guiding us, and that maybe we shouldn't mess with that force. I think that it is like time travel, it is something that we definitely don't fully understand, we can't foresee all the reprecussions of our actions. I think that there will need to be some MAJOR limitations on what people do with our newfound genetic knowledge.
Okay, I'll admit that this is great, for every windows user. But what about the Linux users who'd like to be able to use a system like this? I think that Microsoft is probably trying to solidify it's presence before the breakup.
What picture types will it protect against, how about movies and PDF? What if site admins just adjust the color slightly, to get out of the skin color definition. This software definitely would need a lot of work.
If you suffer from a noisy computer, try putting it in a cabinet, with adequate ventilation. This should help to lower the noise. Other solutions involve white-noise generators, or using carpeting around your computer to absorb noise. In one of my work areas, I have a small water fountain that not only masks the computer noise, but gives a relaxing background noise.

How about I TELL you I'm gonna hack into your box and load it full of child porn and then call the cops?
First of all, please don't flame me. Second: The difference is that you are neither my legal guardian, nor are you trying to protect me. The use of spyware which I am suggesting is simply a way of discouraging children from accessing inappropriate web sites. I also think that this use of it should only be accesible to parents who want to protect their children. I'm sorry if you don't feel that way.
I'm not suggesting that you do this withoput their knowledge, but let them know what you are doing. ANd make sure that they understand that you don't want them going on inappropriate websites.
The spyware that's being used by major companies, is not bad in and of itself. It's bad because it's being used by bad people. What if we took the spyware used by these companies, and gave it to educational institutions and parents so that they could watch and control their children's internet access, without the knowledge of the child. This would be a great leap for child-protection, because the current programs are not very dificult for a computer-savvy adolescent to crack; but the spyware programs are vey well designed. Just a few thoughts, please don't flame me. -- "Long live the chipmunks!"
Before we go and start implanting ourselves with eye enhancing technology, we need to decide how far we will let this go. THe implications of replacing broken body parts and enhancing people could lead to things that are more machine than person. This could be a terrible step for the human race. This advance could lead to our species seperating into two catagories: people who have implants, and people who don't. So before we start hailing this wonderous technology, maybe we should stop for a second, and see where it will lead.
Has anyone noticed that many of the things we have today were being written about and shown in movies and on television decades before they were in public use. I would suggest looking to television for future advances. For example, in Earth: Final Conflict, they use small devices called "globals" which can be used as cell phones, limited internet portals, personal organizers, and other things like that. With the advances in miniaturization of power cells, and the incresingly power efficient systems, these may soon become a common reality. Also, has anyone considered the possibilities of portable full-VR systems? The possibilities of VR used in concert with "Motionware"? This could allow people to be in conferences while in a car or on a plane. Just a few thoughts. "I hate quotations, I don't know enough to make a good one. You tell me what you know."
Without the monopoly of windows scaring away many die-hard nerds, windows will seem much more viable to everyone. Linux will find itself without a consumer base, and will have trouble surviving. Mac OS may end up being very useful, but I predict that windows will still remain on top.
With the trend of game companies going towards making their products Linux compatible, what about Microsoft? Their Age Of Empires series is very good, but will they make the game Linux compatible?

It might make it easier if they set it to let you tell the search engine how long to search each site, so it wouldn't get hung up on one site.
It's a better idea than just letting it all rust, but what is the cost of that, and if it's cheap, then why don't we try doing that in the US?
