Yep... my father worked for AT&T for something like 23 years, and the union was nothing more then a huge pain in their asses. I remember him going through a strike when I was 10 or so... man, my parents were scared then.

Then union used to do things like: A company (or gov't team.. I forget which) wanted to hand pick the best people to go over to Armenia after the earthquake (I forget the year) to help restore communications. The union stepped in and said they had to go purely by seniority instead... so they went elsewhere. My father was one of the people they wanted, and he lost out on a great opportunity and good money because of the union's actions.

I think the entire time he worked there, the union did perhaps 2 or 3 things that were good for the workers in their eyes... the rest of the time what they did resulted in more harm than good.

I had to join the Teamsters when I had my first job at the SD Zoo. The union clearly didn't care about us. As long as we earned enough to pay dues, that seemed to be enough for them. And of course, noone lazy was fired, and promotions weren't based on merit but on seniority.

It was the choice to use off the shelf components by IBM for it's original PC that started the x86 market. All it took was a little reverse engineering of the BIOS, and clones could be built by competitors to IBM. If MS hadn't been the lucky ones there at just the right time, it would've been some other company and/or OS that ran on those first PCs.

I served on a jury last year for a gang-related murder trial, and none of us on the panel had any problems judging the facts as to how they related to the law. I think that's what matters. It's due to MS OSes that people have come to accept regular reboots and/or crashes as a completely normal part of computer use. Yes computers and OSes can crash.. but with decent OSes, those crashes are much more rare. As one who works in an admin group with well over 500 Sun and HP workstations, I can tell you that crashes and reboots are rare compared to the NT/w2k desktops that everyone has...

Without their illegal contracts with OEMs, and outright theft of some technologies, MS would never have risen to the top like they have. MS knows this, which is why they do what they can to destroy all prospective competitors before they have a chance to threaten them.

It did exactly as he said: I would bust my ass, and other lazy workers got promoted simply for being there a few months longer. Unions love to go by seniority, as if time at the company has anything to do with your worth as an employee.

The few guarantees that the union contract got us were little more then enough to make sure that we could pay our monthly dues (we're talking seasonal workers here). Then after quitting, the union hounded me (and a friend who quit the same day) for about 4 months trying to get us to pay dues even though when we left the job, we were automatically out of the union. The numbers on the mail we got from them about questions were never answered, and we called all times of the day.

Like a lot of things in life, the idea of unions is noble... but when reality kicks in, they suck. There's far too much corruption in them and they tend to either not benefit the workers enough, or they do more harm then good by making demands that companies can't pay for.

I enjoy using my brain and solving problems, and yes, a lot of the extra work I do is because I enjoy doing it or am obsessed with solving a problem I'm working on (taught myself customized Solaris jumpstart trees and custom Solaris packages over a weekend last month over just such a problem). That doesn't mean I think we shouldn't be compensated for the time we put into the job, or get taken advantage of because we happen to enjoy most of what we do. I also see the engineers that I support working ungodly hours to meet insane schedules as well.. seems to be the norm for most technical work today, not just IT.

In any case, just because you (I assume) got into IT for the money, doesn't mean we all did. Many of us love working with the latest and greatest hardware that cost more than we could ever afford. We also love having toys to play with... I mean test. :) In fact, those of us that love computer work tend to be the best at the job. Mainly due to having more natural troubleshooting skills then those that took a course at a trade school after seeing the commercials promising, "more money then most college graduates make." Many of us learned/still learn more on our own then we ever did in any fomalized training.

Some of us are also smart enough to not dig a hole we can't get out of by only learning one OS and/or platform. Personally, I touch Windows as little as possible, perferring the control I have over unix boxes much more (mostly Solaris but some HP, and more and more Linux as time passes). But I still make sure I know the basics in every OS I might have to touch, and I'm always willing to learn new skills.

Oh, and yes, I do get enjoyment out of figuring out some obscure hardware/software error, building a new massive farm of servers, etc. The fact that you never did clearly shows (to me anyway) why you don't miss working in IT, and likely never did belong there in the first place.
