  1. Mir Stowaway Pleads for time. on Mir Deathwatch · · Score: 1

KOSMOGRAD, March 22-- After sending a final command to the Mir Space
Station, triggering its fiery descent, Russian Space Agency engineers
recieved an unexpected signal from the aging space station. A radio
message, in Russian, said, "Help me. I am stowaway. I thought this
would be fun, but now I come out of hiding. Please do not crash Mir!"

Russian officials were not sure what to make of the message, and were
frantically trying to contact Mir. However they admitted that at this
point the can see no way of boosting the ship to its proper
    altititude.

As emails of support for the stowaway came pouring in, officials
seemed unwilling or unable to do anything. One suggested the message
was just a tape recording left by a disgruntled Cosmonaut. Another
dryly said that even if it is a real person no action should be taken.
"He vanted to be Kaptin of Mir. Vell, now the Kaptin must go down vith
    de ship."

Just wondering, aren't there Infrared/Microwave Wireless systems also, eg like the way Palm Pilots talk to each other. The article only mentions radio. Can I assume that IR wireless won't work as well here simply because radio waves diffract around large objects better?? Or can IR based wireless devices be use here as well? And what of these? Can they be used for tapping into publicly available networks also? Thanks.

  3. How Profit from Mir's demise... on Burn, Mir, Burn (Do You Like To Watch?) · · Score: 1

My get rich quick scheme for Mir.

FACT: The Russian Government has taken out a $200 Million insurance
policy in case Mir comes down on somebody.

CONCLUSION: Its up to us to be clever enough to win that policy.

    PLAN:

1.) Buy, Rent, Charter or otherwise take posession of a small
ocean-going cargo vessel in New Zealand. Hire your friends/relatives
    to be your crew/employees.

2.) Conspicuously leave harbor w/ crew and "valuable cargo" of
    diamonds, etc.

3.) A mile or two out to sea, put the ship on autopilot in the right
direction, and jump ship, swim back or use zodiacs.

4.) Using timer/remote control set off a distress beacon just after
Mir re-enters, preferrably with a tape recording saying "help me!"
Then set off an explosion in the fuel tank which will sink the ship.
Be sure to leave lots of life jackets & other flotsam on the deck for
the coast guard to find afterwards.

5.) Now, as the president of the company that lost the ship,
    simply sue Russia for:

    ---$100 Million in lost diamonds
---$50 Million per lost crew/family member.

Sure your buddies will have to hide out for a while (like the
Great Train robbery guys) But is this foolproof or what?

What's wrong with it is that current (local and National US) law enforcement WILL abuse this power. Given their past deeds (COINTELPRO, Rampart in LA, etc) you can bet they will use this information against legit citizens who are NOT committing crimes.

Example: Suppose there is someone the gov't considers "suspicious", call him Torvalds. Using this technology they can see who his friends are, and then using liscense plate scanner tech. the can see, eg if he's going over to the house of another "suspicious" person, call him Stallman. Now supose these two are planning to do something really revolutionary (though legal) The gov't will just put them both on ice for a few days/weeks, on false charges, so the event will not go off as planned.

Don't Believe could happen? It already has. Hoover had every hotel room MKL visited bugged before hand. And this past year, at both republican & dem. conventions, hundreds of protesters, especially leaders, were jailed on false charges ("put on ice") that were later dropped after the TV cameras had left.
