As Leona Helmsley put it- taxes (laws) are for little people.

Why isn't Wall Street in jail? Why does 1% of the population own 50% of the wealth? Because we live in a corrupt plutocracy where the control of first lawmaking, tax policies and regulation, but failing those goals, of law enforcement itself, are the first and second priorities of the rich.

Sorry to go Freudian here but this is classic classic denial and projection.

From Reagan tearing the solar panels off the White House to the conservative assault on the scientific veracity of human caused global warming, conservatives are single-handedly responsible for the looming destruction of civilization itself.

This is not the type fo thing any political movement survives. Not only is it going to take down "conservatism" and have human garbage like Rick Santorum and that 25% of the US population that thinks he's being "raised up by God to lead us" covering their tracks and denying they were every deniers in 20 years time, it's going to also destroy once and for all the anti-regulatory / "free market" / "small government" mantra that started with Reagan in "modern times" .

It's all over for conservatives and religion and crap like Citizen's United and the human garbage that spawned all that , all over but for the screaming.

Everyone thought it was amusing or at best a little sad when a huge part of the US population decided to "find Jesus" and go all evangelical - fundamentalist and mainstream crap like evolution denialism and "young earth science" and Intelligent Design.

Researchers know that paying someone money to learn (or the reverse of this, fining them for not learning) has the effect of making learning uninteresting to the learner unless money is involved as an incentive / disincentive.

    http://www.rochester.edu/pr/Review/V72N6/0401_feature1.html

This of course perfectly describes the mind set known as "greedy" where all expenditure of mental effort is evaluated first and foremost on a transactional basis and is never its own reward.

The people who most fit the above description are of course just those billionaires funding these schemes.

So these schools become narcissistic projections of the funder's own egos and value systems.

But these personalities don't invent, they aren't creative, they aren't the source of technological progress.

Rather they're the specific personalities that fill the role of monopolist winners within a system that is guaranteed to produce such winners in any event. Given our system of deregulatory capitalism and pliable legislators and courts, someone was going to be Bill Gates and someone was going to be Larry Ellison. They're not unique in that sense.

Ellison himself characterized the early buggy database as a "roach motel for for information- data goes in, but it never comes out..." which is not surprising since he invented none of it and barely understood E F Codd's relational model to begin with. Nevertheless he's a business winner.

Gates famously invented nothing of note; he was good in his capacity as a narcissistic leader and good at surrounding himself with co-dependents who could be relied on to fiercely buy into the cult of personality and do actual work.

This is in marked contrast to the mindset of the lowly researcher who actually invents new technology and makes actual discoveries. This type of person is curious for curiosity's sake and feels wonder at things that motivates her towards knowledge for knowledge's sake. Some of them become entrepreneurs it's true but they're two different personality types- one is mercantile and transactional and fundamentally disinterested in anything that won't make her money and the other is more likely to seek out a position in life which will let her pursue her interests and be comfortable. All of academia is built on this basic fact.

Either you're going to use a widget library or you're gong to be drawing freehand. If you want to draw freehand then Java2D and JOGL or Java3D are the way to go . I have used these many times to great effect. There are tons of libraries out there for scene graphs for instance if you want to go that way to graphing packages to number crunching to text processing all active all first rate.

Where does over aggressive language faddishness come from? "Java is a bloated and slow .. Swing is dead... " stuff like that?

IMO it comes ultimately from consultants who are always looking to have rare expertise they can charge a lot for. They make a boat load of money when they're one of the first 25, 50, 100 consultants who know about "New Breakthrough Technology Which Is Where Everyone Is Going To Go" and can charge 250-500 an hour consulting to companies who buy into The Dream.

Every language has its place and every language is interesting and worthy in its own right and is perhaps the best language for a particular task. Languages get nicer to use *in some ways for some uses* over time but they also lack things like a wide range proven libraries and tool support which makes for huge productivity boosts.

i am not dissing anyone's choice of language here. I just have to note the misconception embedded in the OP's characterization of Swing and Java and how or why he may have acquired it. It can't be first hand or he wold know that he can use Java for interfaces and not use Swing, and this gets me thinking about why language wars even exist at all in the form that they do with the FUD, the bashing, the wide dissemination of plainly false characterizations etc etc .
