I took the Gentoo plunge this weekend as well and I am also coming from the RedHat camp. Unfortunately I am not making it past the kernel compile. Bummer! I like the feel of the installer.
If anybody knows where the Blender user groups have moved, please let me know. Blender is still plenty useful and a terrific product. I am sure many people feel a great void because the web site and discussion groups have shut down.
It wasn't because it was a bad product that it's being discontinued. It's because they didn't have a good business model. They received funding money and then proceeded to piss it away. And they weren't generating any revenues from selling the product.
They hired a whole bunch of people. Moved into fancy offices. Bought a trade show booth. Travelled around the world to trade shows. Did stupid stuff like porting their 3D app to the iPaq. etc...
Online docs are good for some things but not EVERYTHING! I like to read on my commute into work. I have an hour train ride each way and it's a lot nicer to read a manual than a help screen.
I laughed when I saw mIRC = IRC. I help many a newbie with their new computer setups and what I find even more disheatening is they think AOL = Internet.
I don't think there is anything I can't stand more than having to go online using AOL.
I couldn't agree with DeadMonkey any more. Blender is simply the most fun program I have used in ages. When I demo this program to friends, I find myself demo-ing the interface features almost as emphatically as the program content. This is a GUI that was built with keyboard shortcuts in mind. I find the fastest way to work with the program is to have one hand on the mouse while the other is on the keyboard.
It is not very intuitive at first but you are amply rewarded by investing some time to learn.
The limit's being placed on initial investors at E*Trade is to protect unexperienced investors that are not aware of the pitfalls of an IPO. IPO's usually aren't accessable to the general public. It used to be the province of institutional traders. Companies like E*Trade are changing the face of investing (for the good).
There may still be a few bugs in the process but they will be ironed out over time.
I was not impressed by those preliminary photos at all. The design looks terrible. However, I'll wait until I see the real deal and most of all what kind of capabilities it has. I'm looking forward to the launch.
The Linux pavillion at PC Expo was definitely disappointing. I expected to see the biggest and best support yet for Linux and, as mentioned in the original post, there were just a couple of undermanned, small booths that weren't showing much. Where was VA Linux Systems with all of their recent backing?
My first thought was maybe Linux won't make it to the big time after all.
My second thought was that I better not pour my life savings into RedHat stock.
All I can say is that I am sure many of us would like to get in on a piece of the action. I'm hoping that Slashdot will have these IPOs posted as soon as they happen. Before they happen would be preferable:-)

Wish the $1/GB was true of SCSI drives. I'm in the market for new SCSI drives and am looking at Ultra320 that cost between $7.27 and $8.08 per GB.

Does anybody know when that will be?
